A while ago I thought I'd give Gintama a go, because it was supposed to be really funny and popular. I dropped it midway through the first episode. It just seemed really stupid to me.

Just recently though, as the popularity of Gintama doesn't seem to be waning at all, I thought maybe it's me. Maybe I'm just being really uptight and anal about stuff. So I sent it to my sister saying "give this a try, it's supposed to be really good". If she says it's good I'll give it another go.

I got a message back today. "This is, most likely, without a doubt, the worst show I've ever seen."
"I know", I said. "I thought it was pretty terrible also."
"Then why did you pass it on for me to try!"

So yeah, now I can safely ignore Gintama without thinking I'm missing something special. Happy days!

I also recommend watching from episode 3 (it's the real first episode the episode 1 ad 2 of the anime is some two part special that isn't in any way canon), it's practically a night and day difference of quality. I was similarly put off twice because both times I made the mistake of watching episodes 1 and 2 and quit because they just sucked.

  2. Finished watching Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid yesterday and I really liked it. All the character are likable an their quirks never get old, the jokes are all funny, Kobayashi is surprisingly relatable and the series does a really good job evolving her and Tohru's relationship. Really hope they make another season. My only real (and overall minor) complaints are the last episode isn't as rewatchable as the others due to it being more serious and I really wish Funi had dubbed the OVA. They did such a good job dubbing the main show that I really wanted to hear how scenes like this would turn out in english:

Also watched the first five episodes of Hina Matsuri and it's been a funny and enjoyable watch. Just the premise of alone of an up and coming yakuza suddenly having to adopt a psychic girl was enough to get me to check it out but it surprised me at how good the character comedy is. The characters just bounce off each other so well in this.

As for the others I've been watching:

Gintama: Finished episode 17. I have to admit I am liking how the show still maintains its comedy but is able to present story points you can take seriously enough without it clashing with that.

Gun Gale Online: Well that arc ended on a very good note. I'm looking forward to seeing where things go from there and just what kind of person Pito is in real life.

Yuru Camp: Watched the first 6 episodes. Funny yet surprisingly relaxing show so far; it also brings back memories of what I enjoyed with camping back when I was in Boy Scouts

  3. Watched the Hunter x Hunter movie Phantom Rouge...it wasn't very good. I'd heard it was an adaptation of a scrapped rough draft the author made and it shows. Plot details are rushed, so much time is spent with Gon and Killua hanging around with an original character who isn't very interesting and you can tell what they're planning for this character within seconds after she's  introduced, the conflict on Killua's end feels like retredding of stuff handled better in canon, Kurapika and Leorio don't do much until the end and perhaps worst of all the villain is boring. This guy's supposed to be a former member of the Phantom Troupe, who all had interesting personalities and design to go with their villain role, but he doesn't have any of that.

After that I decided to check out Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and watched the first two episodes and I'm liking it so far. The first episode did feel a little disjointed but it still had a weirdness appeal to keep me interested; the second one was better put together with not just good comedic scenes but also quieter more character focused scenes between Tohru and Kanna. Who knew one day anime would give me the dragon sitcom I've wanted since the tragic cancelation of Scorch.

  4. Just got back from watching Infinity War and really liked it. A well put together wham episode for the MCU.

    Spoiler

Okay, I know it's probably not going to happen and morbid as it may sound, am I the only who thinks it might be more interesting if all the deaths that happened in this movie stuck? Then the sequels could take some different directions than expected: Guardians 3 could focus on Stallone's group that were introduced in 2 and maybe the main characters could be Rocket and Nebula trying to get over losing all their teammates, in Black Panther 2 it could be about Shuri or maybe M'Baku taking up the mantle, Spiderman 2 could be about Miles Morales or Ben Reilly which could lead into an MCU take on the Clone Saga.

  5. Deciding to finally put my Crunchyroll app to use and have been watching the following:

    Gintama:

Watched up to episode 11 and I have to say this series is growing on me. While not as laugh out loud funny as Gabriel Dropout, I do like the group dynamic of the central cast and the Shinsengumi are pretty funny too.

    Lupin III (first series):

Watched up to episode 3 and I am liking it so far. I admit I am mainly liking it for how 70s it feels, especially the opening. I'll admit episode 3 was a little on the weak side, like it tried to do two much in one single episode. Also...

    Spoiler

There's a character that dies in that episode whose death just doesn't have the impact the story wants. First since we don't know that much about her as a character and most notably it feels like the only reason she dies is because the characters were dumb enough to forget about her until it was too late.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These

Watched up to episode 2 (I don't have a subscription for CR) and I am liking it so far. The space battles were cool and both main characters are likable; so count me interested in seeing where this goes. Of course I'm saying this as someone who has not watched any of the other parts of the series, but I don't feel the least bit lost so extra points for being a good jumping on point.

    Gun Gale Online:

Watched up to episode 2 and this has been pretty neat. I haven't watched SAO, but thankfully wasn't lost watching this either. The main character is pretty likable and as someone who does tend to agonize over my character's look in WRPGs (yes that even includes Baldur's Gate) the second episode really clicked with me a bit. Curious to see how she met the guy she was partnered with in the first episode...

Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!

Watched up to episode 3 and it's been pretty funny so far. It does a good job pardodying the magical girl tropes, reminding me not only of quite a few of the ones I saw in anime club growing up but also of this one anime I saw in my college's anime club called Pretear in which the transforming characters were also guys (plus the main girl) and their transformation also had an awkward name to it (through in Pretear's case it was more the phrase than the name).

  6. Okay, here's mine (numbers don't quite indicate rank):

    1) Crescendo

While not my first eroge, this was my first story focused eroge and showed to me what potential this genre had to blend good story, characters and ero. I haven't played it in a while but it still holds a special place in my heart.

    2) Tsukihime

My intro to the supernatural genre and the first of what got me hooked onto Type Moon and its insane, dark yet endearing mythos.

    3) Fate/Stay Night

It may be unfair including this too, but F/SN took everything Tsukihime did and perfected it. Of any VN, this is the one that has me coming back to UBW and Heaven's Feel, their adaptations and their many spinoffs.

    4) Kyonyuu/Funbag Fantasy

The first nukige to show me that such a genre can bring characters and story to go along with its massive ero content.

    Honorable Mentions:

    1) Phantom of Inferno

My introduction to Nitro+, didn't make the list because even when it came out the DVD format made it a pain in the ass to replay.

    2) Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo

One of the earliest eroge where the character centric stories really sucked me in...that and Norio Wakamoto's excellent performance as Hozuki.

Btw, what do you mean in the Gintama part? One of those two "latter" should be "former", right? I'm guessing/hoping you meant the first episodes are the not-too-rememberable.

I meant to use former for the last part, indicating I meant the first two episodes were forgettable. My fault for typing this stuff up before bed :michiru:

  8. Been making some progress on the White March expansion of Pillars of Eternity and it's been pretty good. Sure the White March itself does feel a little too similar to the Icewind Dale from Forgotten Realms (I'm talking about the setting not the video game, which I haven't played...yet) but I have still been having fun with the sidequests. The quest involving the town bum getting himself poisoned (with my help :makina:) was pretty funny

  9. Finally finished Kyonyuu Fantasy 3 including the epilogue ero scenes. Overall I thought it was pretty good, about as good as the first one. Definitely liked how they utilized Yurinas' role as a god and his mentor relationship with Inferius was something new and perhaps the best arc of the game. There are definite signs that parts of the story were rushed and I get the feeling the VA for Ajura had some schedule conflict come up while they were recording since aside from her noticeable absence from much of the story, her H scenes are surprisingly short for this series.

Also finished Impey's After Story in the Code Realize FD. It was a nice light read with some cute and funny moments between Cardia and Impey.

    Spoiler

It is a shame we don't get to see them go to the moon though

  10. Finished watching Gabriel Dropout a few days ago, really enjoyed it as it's probably one of the funniest anime I've seen in a while, especially any scene with Satania.

Also watched a couple of episodes of Gintama, man is there a night and day difference between the first two episodes and the ones after that. The latter actually being interesting and funny whereas I can't  remember a thing about the former.

Also been working on getting caught up on Detective Conan; watched up to the Kaito Kid two parter of 627-628 along with its Magic Kaito tie in episodes. Also watched Movie 14 which all in all was pretty good, but a little too long

    Spoiler

especially that plot twist that they use that feels like an excuse to extend the movie

. Also while I like Heiji and Kazuha but you could easily cut them out of the movie's plot

Iskandar's kinda underwheliming, imo, though I haven't rolled him. Shuten's good support, gets a lot of debuffs in. She could be useful in some later fights, but she's not all that impressive from what I've seen... I haven't rolled her either though.

If you had to go for a 5* Assassin, I honestly recommend just waiting for Jack to show up at some point.

How does King Hassan compare to Jack?

  12. The Detective Conan crossover event started today and finally had time to play the prologue (could have played it on the sly at work, but I wanted to hear the voice acting). It's at least being creative in an enjoyable way when it comes to establishing why the crossover is happening. The only thing is it's also a reminder of how far behind I am on Detective Conan since I have absolutely no idea who this Amuro Toru character is outside of what the brief description the game just gave me

  13. Finished Sorami's route in Tokyo Babel and...it was fine. The new villain was pretty good (still surprised my first guess as to his identity was right), most of the fights were really good and I did enjoy the buildup of her relationship with Setsuna. It's only when we get to the end where I have some problems:

    Spoiler

First, Eve does not make for a very good villain. It's not because the reveal feels out of nowhere, but rather the reveal that she caused the whole calamity thing just doesn't feel as impactful as it should.

Second, the fight between Setsuna and Adam feels a little to long.

Third, Sorami just doesn't really do much in her own route after we meet Metatron; she spends most of the story from there kidnapped (and asleep). Comparatively, Raziel did more in her own route (not to mention this route), and while I get Sorami isn't a fighter at least in Raziel's route she did some support work here and there.

  14. Well, I'm close to maxing Kiyohime's affection stars so if I do get Raikou I'll have a replacement for an AoE Berserker. I guess I'll save the quartz for the summer event and use the tickets I've saved up for Raikou. Don't really need Iskandar since I have Drake, might try for Shuten Douji since I don't have a 5 Star Assassin yet.

  15. 3 hours ago, Flutterz said:

Raikou only really shines with Merlin, or better yet two Merlins. Without them her damage is lower than what'd you'd want out of a Buster AOE Zerker. Archoria is in fact pretty good, and part of the summer gacha which means you can basically only get her during the summer or from a guaranteed 5* pull.

So is Iskandar worth trying for? What about Shuten Douji?

So now that Im done with this 'saving for Jalter' thing, who is the recommended servant that I should start saving for?

For one I'm definately saving for Illya (non negotiable), but are there any others that come to mind that are worth for gameplaywise?

I've heard Raiko is really good so that's the next one I'll be saving for (sorry Iskandar). Have also heard Swimsuit Saber is pretty good

  17. Giving the mobile game The Alchemist Code a try and so far it's decent. Admittedly I'm liking it more for the gameplay (and as a nice nod to FF Tactics, you can throw rocks at your enemies for a very weak long range attack) as the story (I'm currently on chapter 1) while not bad is about as cliche as it gets: you'll be calling literally everything that happens in the opening cut scene.

Edit: I will say one more thing, I found myself really liking the op movie, something about the animation kind of reminds me of the openings for some of the classic PS1 RPGs

  18. Pretty much beaten Kyonyuu Fantasy 3, all that's left is the end game ero scenes. Overall I enjoyed it, though it started to show its story weaknesses in the final arc of the story...

    Spoiler

Basically this is where the plot feels rushed, a little too similar to KF1's final arc even more so than KF2 did, and the villain is kind of dull. While he has better motivations than Highness and Alhif did in 2, he doesn't have quite the same amount of villainous presence that the others of the series have had

Playing some Eiyuu Senki, which is enjoyable in its bizarro history as ever, though I can't help but find it funny how late in the game the main plot kind of goes the way of Fallout 4.

    Spoiler

Especially if you consider the turns as actual days it's kind of funny imagining things on Arthur's end.

Arthur: Oh my god, the big bad has completely taken over my mind and turned me and my best warriors evil! Oh, but I'm sure the Servant of Heaven will save us like he said he would.

(meanwhile) MC: Okay, let's get Nero's concert going! Then we've got that World's Cutest Animal Contest Himiko's organizing with Charlemagne, checking out a bakery with Napoleon, trying to find Musashi with Sasaki Kojiro and helping Vlad get her place cleaned. Still, I must not forget the most import thing after that...the ever growing list of booty calls :makina:

The story gets better? I only read up to chapter 5 before I got completely bored with it, but my impression was that the story content was there for the sake of it being there (which feels pretty standard for mobile rpgs), and that the writers didn't care about it that much. Once I got to a certain point, I just completely skipped through all of it.

But if you're saying otherwise, I may just give it another chance. That said, it may be a while before I pick it back up; still recovering from GW trauma. :vinty:

The part where it starts to pick up is the arc that starts with chapter 17, said arc isn't phenomenal but it is a step up from the previous ones, the arc that starts at chapter 21 is where it starts getting good. Where I'm at right now is chapter 49, where I'm taking a break to enjoy the current event (and possibly the upcoming Detective Conan crossover event whenever it starts...however the hell that's going to work storywise :michiru:)
