The value of Blu-ray

So I've been thinking of buying several Ghibli films from amazon and I have the choice of getting them in Blu-ray or standard dvd. My understanding of Blu-ray was that the disc could hold more data and thus the video and audio could be higher quality. So my question is this: how does that affect an older film (say, Porco Rosso). Does it improve the quality of the movie? Does it matter? I guess the benefit of dvd would be that the cover art isnt painted over with ugly blue and that you can play it on your computer with a dvd drive. And they are generally a bit cheaper. Any thoughts?

In this case it's probably just upscaling differences.

The blu-ray release probably has a higher resolution (or at least an upscaled version of the DVD version), thus higher image quality.

What are upscaling diffrences? The reason I bring up older movies specifically is because I'm not sure how they just make more pixels appear. Is the original movie in hgher detail than the dvd format available at time of release was capable of holding and so the re-release is just more true to the original? Otherwise I don't understand how you would upscale something. The pixels wouldnt know what colors to be! Would they?

Depending on how the original masters are created/maintained, yes, they can be a higher resolution than the 480p video offered on DVDs. Often with older video, they'll go back to the source material and remaster it. Every once in a while some company just upscales an existing 480p video to 720/1080 and it's always a worthless endeavor.

Afaik Ghibli movies were filmed on 35 mm so using those masters for bluray allows for vast amounts of details and very high resolution. And blurays have very high bitrates, compared with DVDs. It will be significantly better than simple DVDs, even on a computer screen (if you have a big TV than it's basically porn). For Ghibli movies I do think it's totally worth it.
