JRPG's on PC

Just a general topic to talk about any JRPG's available, or coming to PC/Steam.

Of those you may have played, do you have any favorites? My personal favorites so far include Ys Origins, and the Last Remnant.

By the way, thought I would mention this in case you people don't know, but Ghostlight, a European publisher known for bringing over various SMT titles, is planning on bringing over JRPG's to PC.

This is a recent blog where they say that they will announce their first title soon: http://blog.ghostlight.uk.com/post/psn-store-news#comments

The part of the blog which mentions this:

"Some of you might also remember that we mentioned in an earlier blog about bringing some JRPG’s to PC/Steam. It was certainly a popular idea :). Well don’t worry we haven’t forgotten about it and I’ve just heard that we will be announcing our first game very soon. That doesn’t mean you can’t suggest titles for us to look into though as we’re still looking for more games to bring to the PC :)."

Being a SMT/JRPG fan, can't, freaking, WAIT. I hope to god they succeed, having more JRPG's on PC would be excellent!

I'm skeptical on the titles they could hypothetically get. The PC version would most likely have to already be on PC in Japan, as I doubt these companies have the resources to do a full scale PS to PC port (doing a PS to PS port is probably much easier and feasible). The likelihood of a large mainstream JRPG release on PC (ex. Persona, an actually good SquareEnix game) sounds like it would be very low. Then again, I have no idea but it sounds crazy to hope for anything "modern".

Last year, JAST released Aselia the Eternal for Windows. (The company almost worked with Xuse in order to create its translation, but ended up working with the fan translation group Dakkodango.) As far as I can tell, it qualifies as an eastern RPG.

XSeed released Ys Origin not too long ago. This was another project in which a company worked with a fan translation group.

As of this writing, Carpe Fulgur has translated three doujin games. I think all three can be considered RPGs.

If you figure in low (or zero) budget games from freeware/indie scene, then there are quite a few more relatively recent eastern RPGs for Windows.

Id love to Play Persona 4. The anime was wonderful!!

It is really good. one of my favorite JRPGs. I played Persona 3 a few years ago and I loved that one too. Sadly, I don't play a lot of JRPGs. Would the Kingdom Hearts games be considered JRPGs?

Edit: I tried playing FFXIII but I could not get into it. Mainly because of how linear it was in the beginning and I disliked the combat too. I was hoping it would be real time like the Kingdom Hearts games.

@okami

Kingdom Hearts is definitely a JRPG. Its kind of a love it or hate it series, you won't truly know until you try it, at least from my experience. Personally I use it as a way to pass time mostly, it doesn't engage my that much >>;

Also, Last Remnant on PC is excellent compared to its console counterpart, which is way too buggy. Give it a go sometime, might end up liking it~

@Electro

They just posted this news very recently: http://blog.ghostlight.uk.com/post/a-contract-signed

Its a JRPG which was already localized in its home console guise, should be interesting to see which title it is!

Personally, I am just hoping that its a good enough title and it succeeds(To a sufficient degree, if not on the level of AAA titles), if it does, more companies would be open to bringing their JRPG's to PC, right?

Hopefully its not just me being naive or something >>;

@SKW(Hope you don't mind me shortening your name >3>~)

I knew about the Ys games, had no clue about the rest, holy crap. Thanks for the info! Gonna look into these <3

@Ryoji

The entire Shin Megami Tensei franchise(Persona included) is really amazing! If you get the chance, play one of their games, such as Devil Survivor, Strange Journey, Nocturne, Devil Summoner...I could go on haha.

They are worth a try, though some of them take quite a bit of time to really get going and pull you in.

I have played both Kingdom Hearts I & II. I really love them. I just wasn't sure if they would be classified as JRPGs. I have The Last Remnant on PC. I bought from Steam back in July. I enjoy it.

Ill have to look for it, I really liked the anime!

Some info:

There's a new version of Persona 4 coming for the Playstation Vita, called Persona 4 the Golden, it contains added features like new epilogues and more social links, so if its at all possible, get that version over the original PS2 one.

Wasn't there a Persona 3 Golden version that allowed players to also play as a female character?

I like the idea of Persona 4 Golden I just don't like that it is only on the Vita. I would love to see it on the PS2 as well or the PS3.

There are three versions of Persona 3.

The original Persona 3, then Persona 3 FES, which is the definitive version as it contains the Answer which ends the storyline perfectly.

Finally, there's Persona 3 Portable, which has the aforementioned female character with her own social links, but does not have the Answer, making it inferior storywise.

If one wanted the complete experience, FES would be the way to go~

Persona 4 golden is pretty much the only reason why I buy a vita in the first place. The amount of extra content in it is just great~

Persona 3 FES The Answer is just amazing. I wished they remake persona 3 into PS3 or vita. I would definitely pay money for that.

back onto the topic, it would really be good if they port JRPG such as the persona series to PC, but with the way it has been going, it is unlikely.

I want to get Persona 3 FES. I played Persona 3 when it first came out and I loved it.

I do hear you can get a bike in Persona 4 Golden.

There isn't so much game yet in Playstation Vita, haha I just wish they made a PC version it would be so awesome.

I like JRPG made by Falcom too, they made games for YS and Sora no Kiseki.

I know pretty much this site only translate visual novel only, but it would be nice to see a translate that translate game like YS & Sora no Kiseki.

I know YS already release in Steam, just hoping for them to release Sora no Kiseki this time. Haha :)

The Genius of Sappheiros, a Touhou doujin game, is a really good RPG that brings back an old-school feel while offering a lot of new ideas and has lots of customization. Almost every boss after the first two have their own unique traits and tricks, making it very different from many RPGs where you just spam your strongest spells until you win. You have a dozen characters that are actually unique and have their own niches in battle, and you are encouraged to use them all, rather than just stick with one party of your choice and pretend the other characters don't exist like in most RPGs. You don't really need to know Touhou to play it. And there's a LOT of content, I think I have over 200 hours in the game.

If you loved JRPGs from the SNES era, you should really give this game a try. Be warned that it also has old-school difficulty, but a new rerelease called Genius of Sappheiros Weekend contains an easy mode that halves enemy stats...

I almost completely forgot about the following:

* Tears to Tiara for Windows. Unlike the later PS3 version, has adult content. It was translated by Dakkodango.

* Utawarerumono for PC. Unlike the PS2 and PSP versions, has adult content. It was translated by Mirrormoon and the brief-lived group Soylations.

* The 2001 PC version of Ys I and II Complete Edition. Created by Nightwolve, the fan who worked on the translation of Ys Origin. The person's domain ysutopia.net now seems to be owned by a gay porn site, so the content might be difficult to find now...

* Farland Symphony is a worksafe Windows game made in 2002, and translated by Mirrormoon. The VNDB considers it to be a strategy RPG rather than a visual novel.

* Castle Fantasia 2 is an adult PC title (with strategy RPG gameplay) made in 2000, and translated by BTAxis.

* Langrisser 1: The Art of the Swords War is a worksafe PC game from 1998. To quote its summary on Romhacking.net: "The original Langrisser for the Genesis was released in the U.S. as Warsong. The game proved to be so popular (in Japan) that it made way for tons of sequels (in Japan.. and mostly for Saturn), and the original Langrisser was eventually remade for the Playstation, which was in turn ported to the Saturn. SoftAction took this Saturn edition, ported it to Windows, and released it in Korea. And this is what this is."

* Men at Work! 2 ~Hunter Academy e Youkoso~ is an adult RPG for Windows. The patch that Mirrormoon made apparently only works with the versions of MAW2 that were part of Men at Work! 3 ~Hunter-tachi no Seishun~ DVD Edition, or Men at Work! 4 ~Hunter-tachi yo Eien ni~ Special Edition.

In case peeps are still interested:

There's going to be a JRPG on Steam Greenlight.

In other news, since we came back from Christmas lots of you have asked us for the latest news on bringing JRPGs to PC. I’ve been told that we should have more news for you soon about a Steam Greenlight project. Thank you for all your interest in this so far. It’s something we’ve been really excited about and I hope you will be too, as if this first game is a success then we will of course be looking at bringing more great Japanese games to PC.

We’ve also been reading everyone’s comments regarding pricing and while I can’t go into specifics, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some movement on that in the coming weeks.

Hopefully enough people support it on Greenlight, otherwise...well :V

Just looking over Ghostlight's site makes me imagine that they're really cool guys (just like Atlus USA, heh), so I'm pretty excited for this too. JRPGs are always nice, and not many of them are ever released for PC, so I'll certainly vote for this as well!
