If I don't know them yet, I'll watch whatever anime or play whatever game just to get to know them and make sure I like the character before I buy something with them (Doesn't apply to original characters, obviously). For example, I watched the shitty anime adaptation of Senran Kagura just so I could feel good about buying a Hibari figure.
