  1. well, I dont have my VNDB open, and I don't have those ones saved, so I can't remember them right off the top of my head, but iirc the ones I am thinking of were generally kind of older, and closer to Dating Sims than Visual Novels, now that I think about it, but they would be set in like, American/English schools, with American/English students, but they would still drop 'Oniichans' and '-Sans/-Kuns' after peoples names. But besides that, Princess Waltz VN was produced in the West eh? I didnt know that, thats pretty cool.
  2. So, I have played a couple Originally English VNs, and I was wondering if any else who did had a similar feeling about a certain aspect as I do. Now, I am not talking about the ones that are set in Japan, or the ones that are centered around a Japanese family/set of friends/etc in another country, but the ones that are also actually set in America, England, *insert countries other than Japan here*, and also center around American, English, etc people, but they still use and put in various things such as honorifics (San, Kun, Sama, etc) or use family words (Oniichan, Oneechan, etc) even though the characters are ALL English, American, etc. and live in England, America, etc. I kind of think this detracts from the story, and the overall quality of the Novel itself, personally, I don't mean to sound like I hate on it, but I don't like it. Anyone else have feelings on this?
  3. Reposting for the fact that, imo, these are still the two cutest pictures I've ever seen this one from Ro-Kyu-Bu is almost enough to give me a heart attck
  4. I'm from North Carolina, and I know at least 3 people that are into VN's as well as Anime/Manga, according to one of my co-workers, a few of his friends are into them as well, but since I don't know them, I can't say for sure, they are a rather large (comparatively) group of people who are into Anime/Manga, but I don't really associate with many people, I just know that they are around in this area, since we are right next to a large military base, and after being in the military, I can attest to the fact that there are lots of people in the military that are into Anime/Manga. Alot of people that I meet that are into Anime and Manga WANT to play VN's, but either can't figure out what they are, where to find them, where to find them in English, etc. I help where I can, but as I tend not to really associate with people outside of my small circle of friends (really just a friend of mine and his wife and kid) I don't get much helping done . Out of all of this though, don't take it the wrong way, I am not really a loner, hermit, outcast, etc. I am actually a very out-going person who makes friends easily, atm I just don't really feel like making any since most of my time is spent either working, or doing work on getting my business started up with my buddy.
  5. So, I was wondering, anyone who has played Canvas 2 would know this character archtype; but I am sure it is also probably pretty common in many VNs; the sickly heroine, she's not necessarily hospital/bed-ridden, it may be a fatal sickness, but its not lethal (For the purposes of this situation, Fatal=It could lead to serious situations such as death, causes fairly noticable changes in what activities the heroine can take part in, Lethal=It definitely will, no matter what) she may have frequent hospital stays, or she may skip class, work, activities, etc because of the *insert sickly-ness*. The heroine's personality itself doesn't necessarily matter, neither do the general theme and setting of the story, Sans Yaoi/Yuri/NTR (Sans=Excluding, for this instance, meaning Do not Include) If possible, the protagonist should be likable, cool, generally a good guy, whatever. I put myself into the shoes of the protagonist (I play VN's from a 'That is Me' perspective) and I don't like being a bad guy. Please no suggestions for G Senjou No Maou, or VN's with similar protagonists. I would look on VNDB, but the majority of VNs, as you all know, aren't translated, so I usually have to wade through dozens, if not hundreds of VN's before I find one that's even in English, and when I do find one, it's usually one of those poor, 10 minute originally English VNs. You know, if more English visual novel makers took some notes from 4Leaf (Katawa Shoujo) there might be a better audience in the English VN arena, I don't mean copy them or anything, but if they looked at how they did it, you know? Man, it's a ridiculous surprise that Katawa Shoujo came out of 4chan, lol, I mean, like seriously, 4chan...the leading producer of WTF since it's inception, lol....oh, I got off topic, sorry Any help would be appreciated, Thank you for your time, Torbin12
  6. As far as the PSP Visual Novels go, does anyone know if any of those are translated at all, or no? And if so, does anyone know if there is a website that has them for sale?
  7. I agree with the Mashiroiro Symphony, that's one I would love. Also Majikoi, Fortune Arterial, Irotoridori no Sekai, Tenshin Ranman, and OreNo. I am looking forward to too much :S, And by the time some of them do get translated (if ever finished ) I may already be able to read them in Japanese anyway
  8. Now, I dont mind the unlockable routes, where you have to do like, the main heroine first, or the 3 primary girls or what not, the only way I mind it is when its like you HAVE to do it this way 1:Heroine A, 2:Heroine B, 3: Heroine C, etc. Although, I can understand what you're saying Clephas, I may try to go back through that VN and finish it anyway
  9. So, I've been playing a certain VN now (left omitted for fact of this sort of being a spoiler for it, maybe) for a little while, and love the setup, I like the battle system (Its one of those kind, with combat, a battle system, etc), the characters, the play style, all around enjoying the game. Then reading online, I found out it was an Enforced Playing Order (You have to play through each heroine in a specific order, etc) and I pretty much immediately decided to drop the VN right there. My real question is this, am I weird for absolutely hating enforced playing orders? I detest them, one of the things I love most about VN's is the ability to make choices that usually affect the outcome of the game and ending, but to me, it's like I feel that Enforced Playing Orders take away at least some of that choice, that ability, does that make me the weird one? What do you think about them, do you like them, dislike them? Not care one way or the other about them? If you dislike them, and found out the VN you were playing had it like that, and liked everything else about the VN, would you keep playing it?
  10. I'll take that into consideration Tay, thanks for the advice, since this will definitely be a busy period for me, although, even when we get our business off the ground, I won't even try to stop learning, I may need to do more, dealing with the type of business I am going to be going into
  11. Day 3 Report After a dismal first day, which included my job calling me back in 6 times over the course of 1400-2330 (2pm-1130pm) due to various malfunctions with equioment, I didn't have time to get much study done. My next 2 days turned out much better, and I have about 55 Kanji that I can reliably see and understand without 'too' much effort, so all in all, so far a success. I have considered lowering the quota to about 25 per day, but for the moment will keep at 30, just to give me that kind of pressure (I am one of those who seems to do better in the final inning, if you know what I mean) The website, Japaneseclass.jp, seems to be a fairly fun way to practice and learn, so I believe I will continue to integrate that into my study. My next report will be in apprx. 1-2 weeks from this one, although the success may be a little more scattered as my friend and I are going through the planning and prep phase of opening our own business, and that will, obviously, command quite a bit of my time.
  12. Looks like I am turning this into a little bit of a Review thread, if this is not ok, please let me know and I will stop.
  13. I think this would be the right place to post this. Anyways, I don't know how long Fuwanovel has been around exactly, or if this type of thing has been done before (super challenge), but I love this idea, and it's getting me really fired up to learn (so that I can beat everyone else taking part in the Challenge ) I think it would be cool if maybe every year, at the start of the year (sometime between January and February) we start a new 'Super Challenge', no prizes or anything, its just that, a Challenge, to learn something new, figure something out, maybe Japan, Anime, or Visual Novel related, that we might not have tried or learned if not for the petty sake of beating others in a contest (just kidding, just kidding ) Maybe even do something that would be like 'Mini-Challenges', smaller and easier than things we pick out for the Super Challenges, that could be done in anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks (Maybe something like...cooking something....or....whatever). Of course if we do that, then a new subforum might be necessary to keep the clutter down a little or something. I don't know, maybe they are just crazy, weird ideas, but I think it's best to put your idea out there to let it get shot down at least, than to let others think you don't have any ideas at all. (Or in other words 'I would rather be known to be a fool, than just thought to be one')
  14. I am gonna hijack everyone else's also, since this seems fun and an interesting way to learn. Also, apologies for getting a late start, but better late than not at all, right? I am technically posting on Day 0, Day 1 will be tomorrow for me, it seems that my brain remembers best when I think of, or try to remember something within an hour or two before I go to sleep, although I tend to have a pretty good memory through out the day also. But, I also tend to have a fairly weak willpower, or....the ability to really apply myself if I don't 'need' to do something. Which is why I think this little contest/competition will be awesome for me, since it will make me feel like I 'need' to do the learning, so that my reports don't look....barren . I think I will have a decent ability to learn the Kanji well, and the Japanese alphabets as they bear certain similarities to Farsi (the primary language of the Middle East) which also uses characters for words, meanings, etc. and I was able to grasp and understand a good bit of Farsi with a fair bit of fluency. So, in that respect I have a slight advantage over a total lay-person (someone who is completely un-experienced in a certain aspect) in that I already have some experience drawing words and meanings from characters. Well, that turned into more of a wall than I expected it to. Goal 1: I hope to understand Kanji and Kana well enough to be able to automatically translate it in my head without much effort by the end of 2013. Goal 2: I would like to be able to read at least part of Bakuman in Japanese (a guilty pleasure of mine, even though I traditionally eschew[to avoid habitually] anything that doesn't break away from normal at least a litte, I still love Bakuman for some reason.) Goal 3: To eventually be able to read an entire Visual Novel with no assistance from English translation, translation software, translation tools, completely from memory and knowledge of the language itself [Date Undetermined] Study Time: I work early mornings (typically starting at about 0200-0400) until just afternoon, then I will set aside time for study from apprx 1500-1600, enjoy a nice light dinner, re-do the learning that I went through before, maybe play around with a game or two, then before going to sleep, do a review of what I learned that day. Where I'm at right now: From the others that I have read, it seems that between 20-40 Kanji is where most people do it at, so I will initially attempt 30 Kanji a day, this number to be evaluated on my progress at the first 3rd Day Report. My total knowledge of actual Japanese language comes solely from what I have picked up through casual anime watching (sinful, I know, I apologize) and a few of the base Katakana symbols that I have picked up from some of the most ridiculous sources. I will pick up the sources that I can when certain things allow, as well as attempting to use some of the resources posted (Japaneseclass.jp, Renshuu.org, etc[et cetera{and others}]) Thank you for this wonderful idea.

  16. I definitely support the Canvas 2 suggestion, its light, but really good, lots of heroine choices, which is a great thing imo. Currently playing Wind: A Breath of Heart, fairly good, and enjoying it, planning to just go through at least one or two more routes before deciding to take a break from it or not (sometimes I need a break between routes in a VN, sometimes not )
  17. So, finished my first route on Wind: A breath of Heart (available here on Fuwanovel translated), it turned out to be Hinata's route (I seem to have a knack for always getting the little sister route, I may have a problem :P/>) This VN was a short one, or at least it seemed like it, I may have sped through it without realizing, though it may also have just been Hinata's route, as I know that some VN's have extensive main/true routes, and then leave the side routes with a little to be desired. I think it was a pretty good story, had some fairly decent hooks, and some decent twists, although at times it felt like the story progressed too rapidly, or left some important details out. For instance, All in all, it was a very pleasant VN, and I look forward to re-starting it in the morning and finding out where my second route will lead. P.S. I left out major spoiler-y type writing, in case someone clicks in here not understanding that it will be a spoiler-y type thread, the one comment that I believe is the 'spoiler-iest' is enclosed in Spoiler tags, so beware if you check the spoiler tags before, during, or after reading this. Once I have determined that I will likely not ruin someone else's gameplay, I may go more in depth as to favored moments in the various routes, etc. So, finished my second route on Wind, this time it was Nozomi, and just...wow, those Feels, there aren't many things that make me feel like less of a man, but boy, the ending for her route made me need to go play a first person shooter game and blow stuff up, just to re-affirm my manliness, lol. This route, imo, was done very well, the twists weren't nearly as 'twisty' as they were with Hinata's route, but that may just be because Hinata's route was new, and Nozomi's route some of the stuff may not have been as surprising since I saw a little of it during Hinata's route. I am debating whether or not to continue with the third, fourth, and most likely at least 2 more routes, because if the Feel's in those one's are anywhere close to Nozomi's, then I would maybe have to think about turning in my Man Certifications....(Hint: I will most likely still continue and finish all the routes )
  18. Like so, so many others, my first VN experience was Katawa Shoujo, but it wasn't the actual Katawa Shoujo, it was the Act 1 Demo/Trial Version, I was reading it, and those feels were already starting to well up, then just as I finished Act 1/Chapter 1, it was all like 'Thanks for playing, hope you play again when we finish', and I 'almost' swore off Visual Novels right there, but then eventually got the entire thing, and loved....loved.....loved Katawa Shoujo, to this day, it's still my most favorite VN, although that may just be because it was the first (you know, sometimes you never get over the first?) Rin's route was my favorite, followed by Hanako's. The feels from that VN were just....amazing, I almost wish that I had one of those MIB mind erasers, so that I could erase all my memories of Katawa Shoujo, just so that I could re-play it again and it be fresh.
  19. I finally got Yukiko Amagi (Persona 4), so, it will be easier now, with her on the sidelines, cheering me on
  20. Wait wait wait....this sounds like an amazing training plan, why hasn't this method been mentioned earlier?
  21. Well, it can't be helped I guess. Looks like I'm learning Japanese. lol But seriously, right after watching the first episode, and finding out it was based on a VN, the first the I did was look for it, the first ep just made me want to play the VN so bad, lol
  22. I heard that the anime is based off/has a Visual Novel adaptation, after doing some searching, I can't find a translated version, I assume that I am right, but I figure it can't hurt to ask, is it true that this one hasn't been translated?
  23. I was wondering if anyone knows any good VN with heroines similar to her, personality-wise, like, super shy, almost to the point of fearing people, or in fact, fearing people, kind of a loner, etc. I don't want the heroine to not like people and be antagonistic about it, aggressive towards others, etc. If there is more than one heroine, there's no need to tell me which one it is, as I would do all the routes anyway. In a slightly related matter, man, I loved Katawa Shoujo.
  24. Well, another game that I have played that was an amazing game, and although not a VN, it is a graphic adventure game, mostly, the Quest for Glory series, I-IV, dont know about V as I never played that one, at the time the games were coming out my comp wasn't good enough to run with it's graphics, but anyways, I-IV were just amazing adventure games, at least thats what nostalgia tells me. You should check them out, they are pretty good.
