hello and welcome! :mare: good luck on your journey and do yourself a favor, dont make the mistake thinking that youll get vns done a lot quicker if you take a break from one and start another. :kosame:

Oops. I tend to get excited when I discover something new I like (Yandere, Imoutos) then I have to run off on a tangent to find more games with it. I am currently aiming to only be playing two at once, not counting ones I've officially got bored of and am putting off into the "stalled" category.

Welcome to Fuwanovel, and I see that you'll gonna dedicated a lot of your time to finished many VNs at once. Feel free to take the rest though if you've felt burned out by VNs, and of course you can discuss any VNs that you've been finished here. I hope that you'll have fun here.

PS - Anyway as for the recommendation I guess might as well give a link to my blogposts here in order to recommend many VNs at once, and I hope that my recommendations would be helpful to you (Also I hope that you'll like girls love genre here).

Thank you! I'm nowhere near burned out yet, and if I ever need to take a break I'll probably play some roguelikes. Currently playing a bit of Evenicle for a bit of a change. I assumed it was gonna be boring because of the rpg elements, but then I ended up falling in love with the very first heroine and have been enjoying it greatly. A nice change of pace. Not that I'm even slightly burned out on VNs, yet. If anything, I'd say I've just become slightly more picky after playing several and am more likely to drop one if I don't like it early on.

My original concern was that I'd go too fast and run out of good translated VNs. I'm not worried about that anymore though...because there are SO many of them, that by the time I finish them all I'm sure I could replay them from the start. Also, I could always resume Japanese study and open up my VN options exponentially, I think!

Girls love genre? Is that the same thing as Yuri? I'm not super familiar with the terms and their fine differences, yet. I haven't played any female protagonist/female romantic interest games yet, but I was curious to try it at some point. Do you have a favorite game you'd like to recommend in that genre so that I could try it out and tell you what I think?

It's one of my favorite nakiges, along with Da Capo 2 and Clannad. Though my favorite imouto type character is probably Mayuki from Comyu.

Since CLANNAD is also one of my favs and I've heard Da Capo recommended so many times, I guess this means it's time to play it.

What I accomplished after finished Hoshimemo:

    -Finished G-Senjou and enjoyed it.

-Got bored with Chrono Clock, again.

-Accidentally downloaded an RPG (Evenicle) and was really surprised at how good it is so far as a visual novel. Lots of "Ichaicha", which might just be my favorite thing.

-Enjoyed a Kotonoha vs DDLC Yuri rap battle on Youtube.

-Tried KurukuruFanatic - the schizophrenic girl's path was actually kinda interesting, but the game wasn't enough to play more than once.

I don't think I'm going to always be in the mood for an RPG, despite how good it is...think I might just bank on us having similar tastes and grab Da Capo right now. (I assume I need to play 1 before 2). Could you link me to Comyu? I stuck that in VNDB and got nada.

Honestly, it is not as good as people claim to be.

    Spoiler

Oh yeah? What's an awesome one I should play instead? :>

I thought the decision/story branching was confusing and annoying, but I enjoyed the music and the resolution of each side story.

Have fun sharing your thought on the forums, seeing a bit of enthusiasm is great change of pace, the summer has been rather gloomy and slow around here. :3

This is my golden year and I'm going to make the best of it! I'm honestly having the time of my life playing these games one after another.

If you have a favorite translated VN that you want someone to read and talk about with, let me know <3.

  5. My favorite old school tactical rpg was Der Langrisser. Here's a link to the translation patch: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/1147/

When I spent a year studying abroad in Hokkaido and was all snowed in during the weekends, I'd wait till the middle of the night and sneak to the university, trying all the doors and windows until I found one left unlocked. Our clubroom (The International Culture Club) hid our key somewhere I could find it. I'd use the PC in there with a flash drive I carried around that had an SNES simulator and the translated Der Langrisser on it. I'd stay up all night in the club room playing it. Good memories.

Sadly, I never heard any gunshots or ran into Saya.

  6. I'll be around for the next 6 months ~ 1 year, playing VNs like mad all day long every day, probably.

Given all this spare time I'd love to discuss the ones I've played and play other people's suggestions. Since I might very well finish a new VN every three days, there's a great chance I could play your favorite and talk about it with you shortly after you suggest it!

    Love and stuff!

  7. G-senjou no Maou

    Spoiler

My favorite soundtrack from this sick musical mafia game is "Down the Dark Path" because it goes so well with the hell on earth scenario that Maou creates at the end; what's yours?

    Muv Luv Alternative

    Spoiler

Some of favorite parts were when Meiya shows extreme emotion, such as when she's offering her body as a sacrifice to appease Takeru's suffering and when she has to listen to the happiness of Takeru and his lover while they're sitting in the training machines; such emotion in those voice lines.

Her original VA is better than the Eternal Heart one. It is sad that Favorite somehow seems to pick VAs that won't continue to the fan disc like with has now happened with Hoshimemo and Astralair both.

    Spoiler

Dude extreme kudos. I was in the middle of creating an example response and you beat me to it within minutes of my post, and basically make a perfect example for me.
Your response is surprising to me. I played a lot at the start with the default Chinami voice selected (by default, I mean it started with Eternal Heart version, not the original). Now I feel I must replay her route with the original voice. Can you tell me why you like it better? I listened to a few lines with it and thought it sounded kinda older, more lethargic. While the new voice was infinitely peppy and adorable.

The anime is better than the game.

    Spoiler

It IS the best path and ending, but you should still play through the game a couple times first, at least. Then you can properly appreciate how it mixes several endings together well. Btw do you think Kotonoha was dead at the end on the boat? I figure it's a distinct possibility but I can't tell for sure.

    G-senjou no Maou

    Spoiler

I wish someone had told me to do all the side chapters first before doing the main story and spoiling the big twist.

    Grisaia 1

    Spoiler

I like Amane's bad ending more than her good ending.

    Muv Luv Alternative

    Spoiler

I wish someone would make a mod that changes Takeru's lines at the very end so they don't suck so hard.

    Hoshimemo

    Spoiler

Chinami is easily best girl and her eternal love voice actor does an amazing job

    Saya No Uta

    Spoiler

I think the beginning of this game is incredibly amazing, but it ends so weakly and feels kinda rushed.

    School Days

    Spoiler

The anime is better than the game.

At first I thought the MC was being selfless in letting everyone out of the purgatory like world, but then I realized he was exceptionally cruel in that he made everyone love him then lose him before he did so.

  11. Rules of the game:

    1. Posts have the following format: VN Title: (One sentence about the VN in spoilered text). Example posts below.

    2. Content within spoiler text may spoil any part of the VN mentioned in the title, but not any other VN.

    3. Alternatively, you may quote/tag someone else's post and respond to it with more than one sentence. In return, they can quote/tag you back and respond in the same way with multiple sentences. (Like a game of tag, thus the name of game)

    4. If you break the rules I will become a ghost and haunt you from beyond the grave.

  12. I feel bad about how spammy and off topic this post became, so to redeem it I'm going to summarize the questions and answers here. If you see a mistake or would like to add something, feel free to say so. I think I'll start a new thread in VN discussions to continue discussing about stuff I have played, so as to stop spamming the recommendations forum with non-recommendation talk. Thank you all for your wonderful recommendations.

I thought it was better than her good ending

Did you play sachi's bad end?

    Spoiler

On my first playthrough I only got one bad ending - Sachi's. I found her choice difficult and picked wrong.

I actually prefer Sachi's bad ending, because I think it's a more fitting result of the MC's reckless, cruel, know-it-all amateur armchair psychology tactics. I hated him in that route. Even though Sachi is my favorite character, her route was my least favorite. She showed her snarky, vengeful, horny personality that I love much more in every other route. I frequently disliked the protagonist in Grisaia 1, although 2 and 3 redeemed him for me a good deal. I just can't get over how he treated Amane like shit when he took her virginity and how he treated Sachi and her issues like a plaything.

I just now went back to see the rest of the bad endings in Grisaia 1 and 3 for the first time.

Every ending and the afterstory in Grisaia 3 was good and satisfying to me.

In Grisaia 1, I thought Amane, Michiru, and Makina's bad endings were crazy good. I'm so disturbed that it kept me up last night. I thought Amane went out like a total badass and I don't mind thinking of that as her canon ending, same as Sachi's bad end. But holy shit poor Michiru and Makina. I could have lived a better life not seeing those fantastically disturbing endings, perhaps. If I had to pick, I'd say Makina's might be the most disturbing VN ending I've seen so far. (I'm aware far more disturbing endings exist, I just have been specifically picking happy ones up to this point I suppose, as you can see from my VNDB.)

Yeah, I was literally fuming in those scenes as well. Most people didn't seem to care though. Still, I didn't really hate Yuuji but he's certainly far from my favorite.

Given our previous exchange, I'm curious what you think of the Hoshimemo, if you've played it, in regards to my previous post's spoiler text.

  16. Finished Hoshimemo. Loved it. Such unexpected depth. Such multi-generational worldbuilding. Such non-obvious plot exposition. Such priceless imouto.

The only thing I didn't like:

    Spoiler

Was how pushy/rapey the MC was with Aoi and especially Yume. I can think of a couple ways that the game at least tries to justify it and fit it into the narrative, but it still made me feel very dirty. Chinami may have not been informed consent, but at least she was enthusiastic consent and obviously willing to proceed without knowing the details. Aoi's was an uncharacteristic acceptance in a situation where she seemed too pressured. Yume straight up said no a million times, in no uncertain terms, and pushing her into it actually led to her freakin' death. Conversely, the tiny Mare was totally informed and enthusiastic about her consent and it made me feel better that she was the final path and not Yume. (totally ignoring the physical impossibility of the penetrative intercourse, of course. I mean, she's an Astral Deity/projection of one, so why the hell not)

-below spoilers of Grisaia and Chrono Cross-
I am sure I could enjoy a rape scene if it's actually SUPPOSED to be one, but these date-rape-type scenes are somehow way more disturbing than the goriest intentional rape scene to me. For example Grisaia's Amane deflowering I find disturbing, while Crono Crosses mindfuck rape scene was totally in character for the sociopathic MC and, while disturbing, felt acceptable.

I was lukewarm about little sister paths before, but no longer. I would like to directly ask if there are other games with imouto paths as good as Chinami. Her "Eternal Love" alternate voice acting was like woah. I did play Chrono Clock's imouto path and it was pretty solid, although the game itself with its simplicity feels like babyfood compared to Hoshimemo.

This long category game is a good deal bigger than the last several medium/smaller category games I played and I suppose that's why it was able to have more enjoyable worldbuilding. It puts me back in the mood for another very long game of high quality (and thus probably non-hentai).

For that, I'm eyeballing Ever17 and Steins Gate, currently. Either that or another good imouto game.

I'm on the fence regarding the Hoshimemo.

On one hand - it has rather good score on VNDB, with 8s prevailing. OTOH there are some really critical reviews on Fuwa and elsewhere, and in addition to this, fan-TL is allegedly awful, and official release, while somewhat better, is broken (with some untranslated lines). Or did Sekai finally fix it perhaps?

Should I add it to my backlog, or don't bother?

I just finished it (and am riding on the high) and came back here to tell you it was fucking awesome (nothing below should be spoilers, just saying "it has this and this type of thing and they are good" but if you're super crazy sensitive to spoilers maybe skip it). The 3-5 untranslated lines didn't impair the story. The amount of garbled lines was actually very low, and I can't for sure even remember any. My opinion is only worth so much having only read like 15 VNs (you can see the list by clicking my VNDB link of course).

In my personal enjoyment ranking, I would say it's under Very Long stuff like Little Busters, CLANNAD, MLA, but way above most of the Long or Medium category that I've played. (Going by VNDB's definitions)

Despite being smaller scope than those big games, it actually had significant worldbuilding and mystery to it. It had the kind of multi-generational plot that I enjoy a lot, a story like The Watchmen is probably a good example of what I mean. I couldn't guess any of the plot twists, which reminds me of Key games. The boobs aren't ridiculously large; in fact there's a wonderful selection of small boobs. The loli characters are actually interesting, not ridiculous horndogs.

The two things that stood out the most: The world building where I had to actively piece together the puzzles of how things work and what happened historically, and the imouto route which was simply fantastic. I had zero interest in "imoutos", but after this game I think I'll be specifically looking for more like it.

What I didn't like, and this is actually a spoiler:

    Spoiler

Was how pushy/rapey the character was with Aoi and Yume.

Sharin no Kuni has an interesting premise, makes me think a little of Psychopass.

I only see two heroines in De Capo on the cover art, which is promising...I really enjoyed how School Days only had two primary heroines and instead focused on the many different ways things could play out with them. Plenty of things I also hated about that system, but still. I'm definitely in the "Love to Hate" category of opinion concerning School Days.

For those that continue to feel like helping me out with suggestions and making this useful reference thread for me and hopefully otherse...

    1. What are some games with enjoyable jealousy? You pick one path, and get to enjoy the reactions of the characters from the path you didn't pick, essentially. It's hard to say what I enjoy about it, but I'm going to guess if you know what I mean, than you know what I mean. Perhaps it's a little bit of a sadistic enjoyment.

    2. What are some games with complicated plot paths like School Days? So, instead of just, 5 characters = 5 paths perhaps with bad endings, it's like there's a lot of little decisions you make that can lead to a lot of different potential outcomes. I love that complexity. CLANNAD had tons of decisions and potential to fall off path options as you go and you didn't quite know when you were stuck on a path - it wasn't the complexity level of School Days in which a certain amount of time passes and all kinds of things can happen in that time, but it was another example of enjoyable complexity.

To elaborate on enjoyable jealousy, enjoyable reactions to developed relations in general would be cool. For example: Grisaia always (except in the case of Michiru, disappointingly) had an awesome reaction scene where everyone talks about the MC and the heroine hooking up (In KKK clothes, mysteriously). Another good example is how everyone reacts to the Twin Route in If My Heart Had Wings (In retrospect I hated a couple routes and loved a couple routes of that game). Just finished Hoshimemo imouto route and weeewwwww it was great! Truly great. Disappointingly - no reaction scenes.

Did the Chrono Clock sister route and shed a couple predictable tears. Just finished the Hishomemo intro (wew serious goosebumps). I do believe that I may be on the verge of understanding why "imoutos" seem to have such an enthusiastic fanbase o.0. Chinami is so cute imma die. So far, the MC does seem to have a bit of a patient guardian aspect to him so this is very promising. Thanks again for the suggestions!

Why must Hoshimemo make Chinami the most painfully wonderful adorable thing ever then torture me by not making her route immediately available? aaagghhhhh

(I mean maybe I'm just failing to find it, obviously don't tell me if that's the truth or anything else about the game. I must do things the right way!)

Not that I'm not enjoying the rest of the game. I guess delayed gratification is where it's at. 2 routes in so far and it's pretty grand.

There's this one dream reapery soundtrack when Mare first appears that that has "ooohhs" like someone's voice in it and it is so badass that I want to google it on youtube or such, but I'm terrified of accidentally finding spoilers upon my google search or in the actual names of sound tracks (it happened to me before). If anyone is exceptionally bored and wants to spoil me by linking that one soundtrack I'd be grateful.

  21. I played Katawa Shoujo and it really moved me (and gave me a disability/catetaker fetish). However, it didn't get me into Visual Novels...because I had no idea about the existence of Visual Novels or the connection between Katawa Shoujo and visual novels. I think at the time I thought visual novels were some sort of niche Japanese thing and Katawa Shoujo was it's own kind of niche one-off thing imitating it in English. Or, really, I just never made the connection. So I greatly enjoyed KS, it blew my mind, and it didn't lead to playing more VNs.

Fast forward years down the road and DDLC melts my soul. It makes me want to die - a keen melancholy that's hard to come by and a valuable experience to me. This time, I explore the steam comments and make google searches looking for a similar experiences. If Katawa Shoujo had been on steam maybe I would have done the same at the time. Wanting to get those feels again I grab the first Visual Novel that catches my eye on steam and also happens to have a ridiculously, in-arguably high rating like DDLC: CLANNAD.

CLANNAD was such a different pace of game than the roguelikes and pvp-centered games I usually played that I had a really hard time getting into it. At this point it became a bit of a mission - I had done some research and learned of the existence of many great visual novels, as well as realized that DDLC was specifically meant to give one a taste and lead them to try other VNs. I was also starting to develop the fantasy of playing losing myself in visual novels as a good, I let's say, bucket list objective/important distraction during a difficult period of time in my life.

So having decided it was in my best interest to push through at least CLANNAD, and wanting to go to sleep with a better feeling than I get playing other, more lonely solo games, I kept pushing myself to play CLANNAD for a couple hours every few days for a couple weeks. FINALLY, I acclimatized to the pacing of the medium, as well as finished my very first route. (oops can't remember which is was. Probably Nagisa, although Tomoyo left the biggest impact at first.) So I got into it enough to finish all the routes, and it was the After Story that really blew my mind. I had no idea what was happening or how far it was gonna go. It was surreal. After that it was Tomoyo After and Little Busters, and well, that's enough mind blowing meta-horror romance to snatch up this goth kid's attention span for the rest of his life.
