  1. Some of the people in the city

have already been 'infected' and are destined to become part of a comyu eventually. Others, like Ayaya, have sorcery in the blood (her 'uncle'). Generally speaking, most people can't see avatars, otherwise more people would have seen all of what was happening when Kagome unleashed her avatar at the end of the first war.

It was mentioned explicitely that regular people can see avatars, and that people reported seeing a black giant back then. Every time there's a rampage, the narration says that there's people seeing them. The reason the game gives for avatars gaining greater prominence is the widespread use of the net. Also, the part at the beginning was probably a result of poor (or no) editing. Finally, I though Ayaya's uncle wasn't a mage, but a scientist?

Also, damn is this game pretentious lol. You could make a drinking game out of the "red color", the castle of glass, and the other oh-so-deep thoughts of Akihito.

  2. If you liked Ever 17 so much, then play 999 (closest thing to it), Remember 11 (same team, less slice of life and darker, but the ending is inconclusive) and Never 7 (weakest of the 3 games, but still a good read) If you have a vita or 3DS, play Virtue Last Reward too.

  3. Playing Kagome's route now. Sadly, Akihito is almost as stupid as he was during Benio's route. And the high-school level "deep thoughts on the world" bit gets grating after a bit, but I guess that's the genre's fault, not just this game's.

  4. Just finished Mayuki's route. Despite being lighter in tone than Benio's, I liked it a lot more. I think it's because it gets to the point way faster, but more than that, because I didn't have to deal with the MC's grimderp thoughts every 2 dialogue boxes in this one ("I'm thirsty, so I buy a soda from a nearby vending machine. I SEE TEH RED!!!1!1!") or Benio's stupidity.

  5. Common guys, Fal is not a bad person. I don't understand the hate she is getting.

When I first read her route that twist where you discover her true personality only made me like her more. Before that twist she was a card board cut out of the "smart hard working girl" archetype. The twist actually provided her with depth. Also, the twist doesn't make her a bad person, just a realistic person. We are talking about an orphan who found an opportunity in life by being used by an aristocrat (Grave is the true villain). She found salvation through being used, obviously she would have no problem with using others as a result. Not to mention that most people in real life use each other, she is no different from most of us in this regard. All things considered I think she is quite a nice and caring person for Chris. She drives Chris to improve his Fortelle skills, and likewise Chris drives her to be a better vocalist. In that regard its actually quite a good ending.

I think that the problem is not that she uses people for her own ends, that's quite realistic, as you said. She gets all the hate because she's such a dick about it. (and after playing Al Fine, her ending gets even worse... why, yes, let's go visit Arietta, that'll give Chris the mental patient closure. Yeah...)

  6. I prefer shorter common routes, the faster they get to the point, the better. But if there is some plot going on (like in comyu,) then I can deal with a longer common route. Grisaia was too much, 5 hours would've been fine, but it was 25 hours of doing fucking nothing at the school, with no plot to speak of. I liked the characters, but their interactions grew tiresome after so much time, and they tended to play up the same aspects, all the time (yes, Michiru's really, really blond. Got it the first 25 times.) that they stopped being unique. Fuck, if they're gonna spend 25 hours doing nothing, at least change it up a bit, make the characters go somewhere, have some "event of the week" to deal with, I dunno...

  7. Ironic the sides stories are best, lol. What is the side stories focused on btw?

One is about Marimo's backstory, back when she was in training, and the other is about one of Captain Izumi's sisters, who was in the battle of Sadogashima and has a pretty bad case of PTSD. Basically, it's what would happen to a regular eishi (aka not Takeru and his epic meltdown) if they survived a very close call with the BETA.

  8. Remember 11 is sci-fi, mystery and has a pretty dark atmosphere, I think you'd like it. Ever 17 is better, though the atmosphere isn't that dark (even if the characters are in a pretty dire situation)

If you like action, Hanachirasu and Kikokugai are pretty good. Both feature revenge as a motivation for the plot.

  9. I said this in another similar thread, but I don't personally recommend doing that, except for through the second mandatory playthrough(seriously, there is almost no difference at all between Sumika's and Meiya's routes).  Aside from getting to know the characters, which makes even Unlimited more meaningful, there is a lot of Alternative relevant foreshadowing in Extra.  Even though I kind of struggled my first time through, if I were to do it again knowing what I do now, I would have at least played Ayamine's route in addition to the required routes prior to moving on.

Extra becomes a better VN retroactively after Alternative.  It's just kind of hard to see it when you first play it.

Well, that's why I said that if he's really pressed for time, Extra is skippable. Because it's a generic romcom (plus lacrosse.) Also, I gotta disagree, while a lot of the stuff that was foreshadowed in Extra was kinda cool (say, Yuuko's physics exam question, for example,) I don't think you lose that much by skipping it. I did play all of the routes on my first time, and if I had to do it again, I'd ctrl-skip my way through Sumika and Meiya. You'll get the information (Ayamine) or the character development (Tama) sooner or later, anyway.

And Altered Fable makes extra look worse. Because it manages to be actually funny in some parts... and there's no lacrosse.

  10. So do I need to play these Muv Luv games in order? All I have heard praises for is Alternative so I want to get straight to the good stuff :P~ One VN is so long so it is hard to force one's way through anything average X'D.

Well, if you're really, really pressed for time, you could ctrl-skip Extra, since it's just a generic romantic comedy (did I mention that it's generic? because it is) without missing much and jump straight to Unlimited, which you pretty much need to play to get the most out of Alternative and it is kind of interesting on its own. But you should play Alternative, as far as translated VNs go, this is the best of the bunch.
