Maybe not what you're looking for because it's an all-ages BL, but Animamundi is an amazing example.

Yesterday I finished Ep. 3 and immediately started Ep. 4 of 9 -Nine-.
Ep. 3 was great, and Ep. 4 is very promising. I think I'll write more when I finish all parts. For now let me just say that Sora is probably the best character in this VN And the way route structure is incorporated into the story itself is IMO on par with YU-NO.
I dunno, i felt that route structure was one of the most overrated aspects of 9-nine. Too much hand-holding in comparison to YU-NO or the Zero Escape series, especially in episode 4 since that had so many opportunities for puzzle-solving on par with 428.

~Necro Necro yay~
Been watching some conspiracy theory icebergs for fun and i'm surprised at the lack of "aliens are fallen angels" and "humanity has reset many times" theories. "Space voids were caused by alien singularity" and "God is a 4th-dimensional being" would've been neat to see too.

From what i've seen in reviews, the first 5 hours are really slow and even though the mystery gets much better later on, it's still not that great when it comes to character work. It does seem to be top tier as far as OELVNs go, but i wouldn't get too overhyped because we have enough of that with japanese VNs.

I'm not that surprised, since the SubaHibi translation came out of the blue as well. The amount of rape is what you regularly get from the average action Nitroplus title, so don't worry about anything at ClockUp level. Muramasa is barely on my top 10 VNs of all time and not even my favorite of 2009, but i definitely recommend it and i wish i took the rumors more seriously, because i'd have probably waited the extra year and a half since i've read it.

Fortunately Berserk fans already had an idea of what the manga endgame was going to be (with the "Idea of Evil" being spoiled by accident ahead of time). This just makes me even more worried for Togashi (HunterxHunter) because i felt that Berserk was nearing its' end while i can't quite say the same for HxH.

As long as being black is just one out of many personality traits rather than his whole character being "i'm black and opressed" due to poor writing, i'm down for it.

Lol the vn where men look better than women
Funny of you to say that, because the same artist worked on otomege Bustafellows (i think it was released in japan a few weeks before Musicus, in fact).

For the same reason Koumura route is pretty much a Nagisa bad end route.

The only way to find any objectivity in a genre is to have enough experience in it to be able to easily identify what a work is going for and judge it accordly. For example, i consider HoshiOri barely decent because the barebones drama doesn't appeal to me at all, but i do recognize that it accomplishes what it sets out to do, which is deliver a comfy atmosphere where the chemistry between the protagonist and the heroines is the focus, which is why the very high ratings aren't strange to me at all, because it's a great VN for the target demographic (objectivity) while is a decent VN for my tastes (subjectivity).

When it comes to presentation in VNs, one discussion that i've seen is that VNs are more like plays than novels. I'd agree with this take because authors that become overly descriptive with every action as if writing a novel makes the reading more tiresome than if a visual or sound effect was used. Thinking about it a bit more, i went a step further and now i think that sprite presentation in VNs may be akin to puppet plays, because the art limitations make it to that the characters can't have the same amount of expressions as regular plays do. Add that to my tiny experience with messing with VN engines where if you're making a conceptual script beforehand, making it in a play format feels more confortable than in a novel format. Finally, the way CGs and sprites are combined work similarly to comic books, where the cooldown moments make more use of certain angles and tricks that the present medium has to make the scenes more interesting while the big key moments have more complex imagery, with the definition of a big key moment being up to the narrative genre.
I'd like to know more thoughts about it. What storytelling media would you compare VNs to from a presentation standpoint?

Yay. Such an aesthetic choice would be the final step into their third world transformation.

Is this really a trailer for the VN remake or a new anime remake?
Nah, just PVs from what i saw from the guy's twitter. It's likely the same as the openings for the PSVita version of Fate/Stay Night.

...on console. GG, MTL-only folk.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town. You can't get more unusual and forbidden than gay love in the 1920's.

Do you people think you might be able to release the full thing by the 10th anniversary of the game?

More of a curiosity thread than a recommendation thread. Those have been rare-ish cases, but i've been finding some chuunige where the slice-of-life is better than the action and wanted to see other cases where people thought the same. For me, the three standout cases were Steel, Alicematic and Devils Devel Concept. Devils Devel Concept in particular was a case where i was half-tempted to skip the action scenes just to come back to the slice-of-life.

About Black Wolves Saga: those 50% are just for Bloody Nightmare or for both parts together?

Name won't be localized as Rumbling Hearts? Boo.

In a roundabout way, yes. Even though moege is aimed at the vanilla crowd, Flowers pulls the "cute girls doing cute things" aspect better than most moege.

Do people read moege for their writing? I thought it was because of cute girls doing cute things, honestly.
But that's the thing, a good writer but even be able to make "cute girls doing cute things" engaging. It may be yuri, but the Flowers series is as good as it gets with that because of the banter between characters. Some moege are well-liked because of good chemistry between characters and some are liked because of good comedy. That's what i mean by "making cliche work".

I watched this video from one of the comic book channels that i watch, and it randomly make me think about moege in the sense that maybe moege is the art of making cliche stories interesting. It's interesting to think about how making someone get into pure slice-of-life through sheer good writing is what might truly make a good author. I just wanted to hear more thoughts about this.
"Literary culture vs anime culture" at the core of "translation vs localization" discussion?
in Visual Novel Talk
Posted
Just a thought that ocurred to me, but the whole "translation vs localization" discussion made me recall one thing: whenever a book has lots of foreign expressions, the publisher just deals with it by slapping a glossary at the last pages, in a way that anyone going the extra mile by actually localizing the dialogue looks foolish. With anime and JRPGs however, there is a certain fear of the dialogue not flowing well with the voices or to the faster spectator reading, so the dialogue is actually localized.
Without getting in whether translations or localizations are the correct direction, my thought is that maybe the very idea of localization in visual novels is ingrained in publishing companies due to JRPGs/anime and translators are treating VNs as anime or games rather than books, perhaps without even realizing it. Does that make sense?
