I feel VN is the perfect format. You get the active reading where you choose the tempo and get time to reflect like in books but you also get the graphics and often voice acting like in movies/anime. And VNs do not simply combine the best aspects of books and moving pictures, it lets you really take the role of the protagonist with choices. To sum it up VN is the format for me, the other media are too strict in some aspects to beat the concept of VNs.

Grisaia no Meikyuu, Which route should I start with?
cryofrzd replied to cryofrzd's topic in Visual Novel Talk
It's hard giving a simple answer of how hard the text is. But I think you'll manage if you've read Black Cyc titles. What speaks for reading Meikyuu is that the plot doesn't involve too complex things, and there hasn't been walls of texts without voices yet. The pacing is quite good and vndb lists it as a medium length novel. One important note though, if you don't understand the witty Grisaia jokes untranslated, wait for the translation.- 13 replies

Grisaia no Meikyuu, Which route should I start with?
cryofrzd replied to cryofrzd's topic in Visual Novel Talk
I can read Japanese with some help, it would be weird of me to pick up Meikyuu otherwise, wouldn't it? I already have started Michiru route, and thus far I can tell the comedy holds high standards, as with Kajitsu. I'll keep Clephas advice in mind and do the main story in the end and prepare Rakuen before starting that.- 13 replies

Hello all of you reading VNs in Japanese, hope there is someone who has read this title and can tell me which story is best to start of with. I'd like to save best to last and want to avoid starting stories which spoils later ones.

1) Even if I think I could manage without internet, no network at all means no phone network wired or not. That would be more cumbersome than having to use a stereo for playing sound and collecting records. To get to school/work and back: 1. Taking the overcrowded buss, meaning you have to stand in 40 min on motorway/freeway. 2. Taking the slow train that stops at every village, takes 1h but you get a seat.

Welcome to the forum, I wish I had more time reading VNs (well I'm compensating on vacations). Good to see one more member (me included) reading newer VNs in Japanese, I took the freedom to look at your vndb.

Hablo un poco español porque he estudiado español durante seis años. Pero porque no he utilizado español desde hace unos años, entiendo más que lo que puedo expresar. -

I don't think I'd call any anime that isn't hentai as ero-anime, no question. But there are animes that are considered ecchi and that doesn't include all romance titles. If you can put that distinction based on content into visual novels you get my distinction between a visual novel that are also eroge, and a visual novel that isn't. These titles that are both visual novels and eroge, I usually refer as visual novels, but I won't exclude them from eroges, because I measure them in different ways. For me what makes a visual novel a visual novel is not the content, but the medium, story (in NVL or text box) with choices. What makes an eroge is the content.

Warmly welcome to the forum! A fan translator is like a hero here (at least for me), because they make the biggest contribution to spread our beloved VNs. I know how hard it is to translate from Japanese.

I instinctively make these definitions: Visual novel: Story game with illustrations either in NVL or textbox style. Eroge: Game with focus on erotic content or at least sexual appeal. Dating sim: A game where you boast your stats to get the reward, a girl/boy. So an eroge is a quite wide definition incorporating most VN and dating sims. I don't know of a VN that'd also count as a dating sim, and I don't know of a dating sim that's also not an eroge.
