  1. Steins;Gate and Death Note are certainly top two for me. After that it's tougher to say. Gosick and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni are good. Rahxephon is pretty underrated in my opinion, if that can be considered a mystery.

Does Tsukihime count as a mystery...? It was good. Though the VN and manga were both better than the anime in my opinion.

  2. I haven't watched the anime because my sense so far is that it's not really different than the manga, but I would have to say that I like the manga in spite of Umaru, not because of her. Ebina, Sylphinford, Bomber and Umaru's Onii-san are my favorite characters.

EDIT: And on topic, what I learned from reading the manga was that Onii-san is a saint and that the only reason Umaru has turned out to be anything like a decent human being even in her best moments is because she had him to rely on all this time.

  3. There's no option for "I don't even consider the existence of h-scenes, but only the overall quality of the game and story," but that's what I do. Sex is natural so it isn't strange if it's present in the game. But it's also not necessary to telling a good story. Games that have obviously gratuitous sex that has nothing to do with the message the story is trying to convey bug me.

That's not to say there's no place in the world for nukige. The purpose of nukige is clearly not storytelling, which is great; it's honest about what it is. What I dislike are games that are stuck somewhere between storytelling and porn without doing a proper job of either.

Sakura series, I'm looking at you.

  4. In my opinion, Shingeki no Kyojin is one of the best anime of the last five years. The biggest downside, as mentioned by Soulless Watcher, is that many (or all) of the characters aren't that likeable or relatable to an average person, but that may be an almost inevitable consequence of the setting and circumstances. It tells the kind of story about hardship, war and loss that we don't often get to see up close. Within the first few episodes we learn that in the Attack on Titan world, lives are cheap, and even struggling or doing your best often amounts to nothing.

Living the type of cushy life where our biggest worries are things like being pressured at work and school or fumbling through our imperfect relationships, it's easy to forget that many people in our world face the type of life-or-death struggle to survive that Attack on Titan portrays. The current real-world refugee crisis is an example. This story is valuable as a reminder to be grateful for what we have.

I had a hard time "enjoying" the story because of how authentic it was in its portrayal of suffering and death. It's certainly not in the category of anime that I like to watch over and over for relaxation and entertainment. But I'm glad I watched it once.

  5. Having finished my fourth re-watch of Hataraku Maou-sama (can't believe how underrated that show is), now I'm watching Suisei no Gargantia again, as well as a bunch of the new shows. Shokugeki no Souma is better as a manga, or so I keep telling myself as I inexplicably continue watching it. I'm also about to start Charlotte. I've been letting the anticipation build.

  6. One of my proudest accomplishments in my early video game life was beating Super Contra without the cheat for extra lives. I never bought into MGS the way that many seemed to, but there's no denying that it's one of the franchises that shaped the modern console era. It's been sad to watch them decline this way, which means this is probably the right move for everyone.

  7. I discussed this exact topic a couple of days ago in the A-1 translation thread. It's a bizarre example of a ludicrously unlikely nukige scene being snuck into the middle of what is otherwise a story-based, character-based game. As such, it's really jarring in my opinion. Even outside of the obvious illegalities, the way every character in the story (including Chris) acts as if it's pretty normal afterward is mind boggling, and not really in keeping with the tone of any other aspect of the game or the other routes. Almost all of the stories center around friendship, close bonds, and protecting those important to you, and this goes completely counter to those principles.

I like Yamato, who I think is generally a lot more interesting than most protagonists, but in order to maintain that mentality I've had to pretty much pretend that scene doesn't exist.

  8. I haven't heard anything about a follow-up to the To Heart 2 translation project, although if somebody does it, I'll be in line to play it. To Heart 2 is great.

Although getting the twins route to activate before the full translation was out literally made me lose some hair.

  9. Majikoi is simply the god of the comedy/slice of life. Each genre has its good VNs, its classics, and so on. Majikoi is, with a high probability, the best comedy/slice of life VN there is. It always surprises me when people recommend the "greatest" VNs and forget not only Majikoi, but the whole genre, as if people only played dramas and fast-paced action stories.

I agree, although I personally think Clannad is the king of slice of life comedy with Majikoi close and high on the list.

I have a feeling that the reason it gets somewhat overlooked when it comes to "best of VN" type recognition is that it's stuck in some weird limbo between "serious" VN storytelling and a bizarre nukige ero mentality. It was around the time that

Yamato went night creeping on Chris and nobody, including Chris, found it that strange

that I realized the game wasn't quite like other AAA-level VNs.

  10. Wanko best girl. End of discussion.

I rarely agree with such absolute statements, but for Wanko, I'm prepared to say she's the best girl in any VN I've ever played.

Now if Minatosoft will just release a retconned ending to her route where I don't have to go insane with rage over all that's wrong with the universe ... or God forbid I might have to start writing fanfic again, which I haven't done since before Majikoi even existed.

EDIT: And on topic, I know I've said this before but I'm so curious about Azumi. Must. Play. Azumi's route.
