  1. And actually here are some of the FREE variants.

For programming problems and help with code: http://stackoverflow.com/

For scripts, OS settings and stuff like that: http://superuser.com/

For help with network and servers: http://serverfault.com/

These sites do not provide mentoring, and stupid questions are closed w/out answers (I have rep-based mod powers on SO, so I do know what I'm talking about). SO is good when you are stuck on some particular problem, and mentoring is completely different beast. I've mentored some people in the past, and its very time-consuming activity that there's no reason to do for free. In fact, mentoring positions are common on odesk.

  2. Guess I'll try Ageha's route now. I hope there won't be Hibari, her parents or Tobioka-sensei... cause they are so annoying and poke their noses into something that is not their business, I wish I could tell them about my feelings using some heavy club ( – -)/☆°_。)

Sadly, Tobioka ruined every and each route. And Ageha's drama is even more stupid than Kotori's, I don't advice to read that route at all for you, just go with Amane and then consider game finished.

  3. Wait aren't eroge, gal game, and a dating sim only like the genre of Visual novels?

No, all of them are separate beings and overlap only partially. For example, there's lots of well-known games from ILLUSION and TeaTime which are eroge and dating sims, but not VNs.

Or, for example, there's whole genre of H-RPGs based on RPGMaker engines (Violated Heroine being most known one), which are obviously eroge but not VNs.

  4. just wanna to ask.

Why in this choice, if i choose "Go to Asa" always go back to title screen after Aoi take off the glider? (Sorry if my english is bad >.<)

    Thx b4 :)/>

Because you didn't score enough points with any of heroines. Stick with one of them to get into her route or follow walkthrough.

  5. hey i was wondering if anyone is willing to help me install this (since this is my second VN) and i already done this simple steps such as changing the region, adding the patch files but i could never get it to run it always takes me to a blank command prompt in the exe file. if anyone can help that be awesome

If you have problems with patch, use prepatched version from here: http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4488161

  6. But already currently when I for example search for some unknown JP name I find, I can go to anidb, nope its not anime, I can go to vndb, nope its not vn, so some search for manga or something and it takes ages to find what it actually is. If I just google the name, it will take me to Japanese site where you have to be able to read kana pretty well and instinctively to recognize if its anime or vn or what it actually is, often the sites are even untranslatable with google translate as they are images.

This is not issue of separate databases, its issue of search methods you use. I see no problems in building cross-indexes of vndb, mal and, for example, dlsite and search them all.

Hell, you could even make it easily with google custom search in, like, 3 minutes.

Edit: I even went ahead and created CSE with all major jap-related databases, https://www.google.com/cse/publicurl?cx=003169042795796959316:it9ajb3h27c, seems to be working good enough.

  7. Also imagine if there was database for everything separately. Anime database, OVA database, H-anime database etc... Having things with similar "vibe" to it together is beneficial for the end user.

That analogy is false. "Anime" already includes "OVA" and "Hentai anime" by definition. And I don't really see a need to bundle anything else there, manga section of MAL would do better as separate site.

  8. So you contend it's mostly social media hype by the Hive Mind? Interesting. If only localization companies could somehow tap into that...

Well, in chans-related internets -- yeah. You cannot replicate this kind of hype, because whole point was "anons created this stuff, which is on par of commercial stuff released in jp", so people got interested in "wtf is this vn thing they made anyway?".

  9. I don't think there is any reason not to include those sex sims on VNDB, lot of them even have HF English translation of menu options and such and it would help English people finding those. Sure its easy to find those popular ones like Custom Maid (which btw sux imo :P/>) but for some other good ones, you have to search in Japanese and that for someone like me who can only read kana is pretty difficult, so for someone who cant even navigate the search websites it must be nearly impossible to find them.

There's good reason which is stated on VNDB FAQ: these games are not novels, so obviously they have no place on novels database.

I can agree that it would be useful to have similar "jap games" database or something like that, but its silly to demand vndb to be it. Anyone can use vndb code to run his own db with whatever inclusion criterias he wants.

  10. Dating Sim - do you really need exactly what it must and must not have?

Yes, "sim" stands for simulation, which is specific kind of software and novels don't fit in this category.

To qualify as simulator, it has to mathematically model some kind of process, thats why date sims have "stats" that you have to raise. Clannad, on other hand, is novel, there's no simulation in the game itself.

  11. I'm still amazed by how many people get into VNs through Katawa Shoujo. What's so special about Katawa Shoujo that attracts people who otherwise wouldn't bother with VNs?

Developed by 4chan, so it spread like wildfire through *chans and affiliated communities, and channers are good at spamming their shit across internetz.

I myself got interested in KS when thread about its release was posted on my /b/.

  12. Managed to finish Ever17. I didn't get Tsugumi-Sora bad end, because too much scrolling needed to reach it and I've already spoiled it for myself, otherwise its 100% completed.

Game is too long in a bad way. Too much text that was repeated across routes but didn't qualify for autoskip, too much useless, boring infodumping (Archimedes, Pygmalion, telomere, basics of information theory and so on — it just gives a feeling that target audience is indeed kids who don't know obvious stuff). Slice stuff wasn't good either, I've ctrl-ed through most of it after my 2nd route.

Mystery wasn't that mystic, I've guessed part of true route plot elements after finished You route, and due me being stupid, I did You first (before doing Takeshi and therefore ruining a lot of game for me). When I've finished Tsugumi, I've already figured most of plot, and couldn't predict only minor details that had no foreshadowing (like nature of BW).

That said, Coco route was still enjoyable, esp. mirror scene, but I would enjoy it more if they didn't include so much pointless text.

  13. I heard it's your standard nukige, didn't play it though. Have you tried Harem Party?

Harem Party is much worse than We Love Master, non-H scenes are beyond dumb, and H-scenes aren't that good to keep my interest, currently on hold after about 30% of it.

Mangagamer has some superior nukige coming up that should be of greater interest: Eroge, Imouto Paradise, Boob Wars 2.

Well, nukiges are all about hitting your specific fetishes, and neither of games you listed have maids, bondage or rich, proactive and cunning protag.

Not sure about writing/cg quality and specific scenes, seems like at least Eroge got decent variation.

  14. There was a really good blog post written by (much loved indie-developer) Jeff Vogel, about when it is okay to steal games/VNs/movies:

You shouldn't bundle VNs with movies and other media, because market structure here is completely different, and what works there doesn't work with VNs.

Many VN devs struggle to survive — its a known fact, and each sale matters.

  15. That discussion feels like you are arguing about different things.

You talk about initial game production costs that have to be covered by someone, Aaeru talks about costs to print new copies.

Aaeru's arguments apply well to bigger mediums like music, video and video games, but I don't think situation is same for VNs. There are no major "labels" who cut into dev's profits, and I don't think premiums online shops take exceed usual 20-30%.

Since many companies already have hard time to just get even, all fans HAVE to support games they like otherwise there will be no new games, its as simple as that.

  16. Tried YMK yesterday. Oh god, I hate this VN so much. Protag is absolutely worthless, spineless scum not worth air he breathes. I just couldn't force myself to read through Aeka route because of RAGE.

Reading through Nekoko now, will drop the game after her route most likely, because Protag x Mizuki is too annoying in its own way as well.

I'm really curious why YMK is so well-regarded in vn community.

  17. There are quite a few VN's out there who are on the same or even lower level of Muv Luv Extra and don't get that treatment.

We don't hate them because we don't read them.

I have zero interest in bland, generic school romcoms, and I absolutely detest hetare + modern tsundere pairings like E!Takeru + Sumika.

And regarding quality alone, while MLE isn't worst, its far from best in its genre as well. Even doujin games like Katawa are better, and more interesting.
