Would grouping games by studio be a possibility? Or would that just make things messier?

Very interesting discussion going on here. Although I don't have anything to add really, as I gave up pondering "true love" and the like ages ago because it hurt my head, and decided to just ~go with the flow~
As far as love in vn is concerned.. I personally feel that love between two people can be demonstrated with or without sex; it's all down to good storytelling. If it's done well, people should be able to empathize with this love even if they believe that "true love" for themselves should happen a different way.

And sorry to interrupt the topic, but I just wanted to mention a few things related to the commercial rather than philosophical side of sex in vn..

A lot of people are mentioning that studios probably feel they have to have ero in their vn in order to sell them. I'm thinking that it would be really interesting to be able to test this theory.. does anyone have any concrete stats on how well the non-adult Key vn have sold, in comparison to the releases with adult content?
Also I think it would be fascinating to do a survey of Japanese consumers of visual novels to see their opinions. (I specifically say Japanese consumers as this is who the creators are marketing to). Do most consumers buy vn for the ero content or the story? Are people who might be interested in the stories put off by the ero content? Or even put off vn altogether because of a perceived notion that all vn are 'hentai'? What companies are seeking to target markets other than the stereotypical 'horny otaku'? There's otome games for starters, although some of these also feature adult scenes..

Lots of questions.. I'm off to do some googling

A Note Before Reading: I realize this isn't a topic to take lightly, but I'm interested in hearing other people's viewpoints on the subject. Historically they're a major part of the medium, and so I feel they're worthy of some discussion.
    *********

I'm not a fan of H-Scenes. I love VNs too much to give them up, but when *those* scenes come up I generally click through at high speeds, looking away kind of awkwardly. (Now, I realize that there are two types of H-Scenes: ones intended to be "tasteful", and others in games which are blatantly sex-oriented. All of my comments are directed to the former, as the latter are... well... they are what they are.)

Is it because I'm "afraid" of sex or sensuality? No way. I'm happily married and therefore have a healthy context to this stuff. Rather, I feel like H-scenes cheapen the VN experience. I understand that these scenes can represent a culmination of romance between two characters, but I don't understand why they have to be so graphic.

I feel like these scenes are included in VNs for the same reason they're included in most AAA movies: the obligate sex-appeal to be used for advertising.

That's the short version of my opinion, more or less. I'm interested in hearing what others think. Again, I realize this isn't the easiest topic to discuss, but I'm interested in sounding out.

Since the boards are back up, but sadly empty, I thought it best to re-introduce myself. So, I'm meru and I'm British, but moving to Tokyo for work this October!

I love visual novels, obviously, but haven't played that many all the way through due to my terrible attention span ^^; My fave studios are probably Key (I know, how boring) and AXL. I'm currently playing, and loving, Harumade Kururu by Sumikko Soft.

I'm currently working on translations for Hatsukoi and Hinomaru, but I'm not getting too far with them at the moment as I have a lot on my plate planning my move >.< I've also offered my services 'round here for modding.

    Nice to meet everyone~
