VN Inspiration

Hey everyone!

I don't want to beat around the bush and cut to the chase. I'm currently making a VN for a few friends of mine, which is purely for them.

It doesn't take itself exactly serious, yet I don't want to deliver some bs VN to them, I want to keep it funny (Using them as characters in the game and insider jokes) yet keep the VN in itself still serious.

I'd love some inspiration from you guys, playing games like 999, Ever17 etc they are based around a plot-twist, eh? This is what I'm going for, I'm trying to build my story around a plot-twist.

It starts with someone being killed, and you wake up the next day. That's about anything I did so far. (So basically nothing) Does anyone have any proper ideas as to what could be used as a proper plot-twist? I really want to surprise them coming up with something that they do not expect, so all I ask for right now is some possible plot-twist theory.

Taking Remember11 for instance (Beware for those who didn't play it, that is a spoiler)

when it's about the DID. I sorta thought making the maincharacter the killer having some kind of DID? Or having a twin that looks exactly like the maincharacter.

that is what I sorta thought I could do, however nothing is settled yet.

So, any ideas what could potentially be a good and not predictable plot-twist? Thanks in advance!

Whats the relationship between the main character, and the person who was killed? (Also, feel free to make an intro thread and tell us a little about yourself).

Will do. It's currently 7 am here, so I'm kinda tired, that will be my last response for today (well, for the next 6-7 hours or so tho)

- The first person that dies (perhaps in the upcoming story more will be murdered? Not decided yet, I'm open for any idea) is the best friend of the main character. As far as the relationship goes. However, every character in the game is "friends" with each other. So there isn't really anyone who is a stranger (I might implement one if it sounds good tho)

Not really much info to go on. A plot twist involving a murder and DID? Have you ever read any Dragonlance books? Raistlin Majere, archmage and master of the present, travelled to the past to challenge Fistandantilus, archmage and master of the past, to defeat him and absorb his lifeforce and knowledge into himself (thus making him the master of the past and present, fantasy writers and their creative titles <_< ). Unfortunately, when the victor absorbed the loser into himself he also absorbed all of his memories as well. Thus, with two full sets of memories and two full sets of knowledge the winner no longer knew who he was, and neither did the reader. Most people think Raistlin won, but a scribe recording the battle wrote down the winner as Fistandantilus, but he could have just been mocking Raistlin... so nobody really knows *chortle chortle*.

Also, for inspiration, there was a Jonathan Creek episode where two twins had an amateur magic act going on, but an accident occured leaving one of them dead. Unfortunately, the twin that died had a husband and children whereas the twin who was still alive had nobody who relied upon her. Thus, she switched identities to try and lessen the anguish/consequences.

Ghost in the Shell had an episode where "Pazu encounters an ex-lover scorned (Kaori Kawashima) who had adopted a body that was identical to his own down to the smallest detail. A knife fight ensues, and one "Pazu" is killed through the eye. It isn't made clear whether or not the victim was the real Pazu or the imposter (Kaori), as they both have cuts across their torsos, and the surviving "Pazu" says nothing." (from http://ghostintheshell.wikia.com/wiki/Pazu )

You could also try playing 'Knights of the Old Republic', which is an excellent story driven game with humour, a giant plot twist and amnesia.

Pardon if I confused you. The DID part isn't really settled.

Actually nothing is settled yet, like I said the only thing I care for right now is the plot-twist, and I'll build the story around that plot-twist. I just mentioned DID as an example for what could potentially happen.

Like the main character being the murderer himself and the reader would always think someone else is the killing one and has that plot-twist in the end, or a twin or something like that.

That was just what I came up with, I just wanted to see if anyone else has any ideas what a good plot-twist could look like. As for now nothing is set in stone yet, all there is, is that there is a murderer. (However, I could even change that, if necessary) I really just want a good plot-twist for now.

Try trolling around with a Zombieland Reference... >> the girl turns into a zombie << XDDD

On a serious note, think of something that even you won't expect. like maybe, the MC was a psycho but clueless of this facts.> Etc etc.

Funfact. I am (myself) the main character, which basically makes my friends think I'll get a happy ending. Like. Why the heck would I make something bad happen to myself.

Trying to play around with that a bit. I still try to figure out what could fit. Feel free to post any ideas you guys have.

Plot aside -- are you using Ren'py for the game, or another platform? Have you started any of the tech/UI work? If your'e new to making a VN, I could point you to some good walkthroughs and software (Ren'py is a great one to start with).

Would love any help I can get. I'm currently using Novelty, didn't know there was something else out there to make these. And yes, I'm completely new, I'm just a fan of playing VN's so far.

Ren'py. I'll check that out.

Novelty isn't bad! Ren'Py is arguably more powerful, but they'll both get you to a good final product as long as you recognize the limitations. If you have any Python programming background, you'll love Ren'Py. Novelty has a simpler UI, though, which could be ideal depending on your needs.

Take a look at both software packages, and check out their native community forums (for Ren'Py, check out Lemmasoft forums. I'll have to look up Novelty's forums). There are TONS of resources there to get you started.

Sadly it seems like the main forum of Novelty isn't having a lot of stuff.

Do you happen to know sources for Characters/Backgrounds etc? - Like I said, I'm doing that purely for fun as of right now, so it doesn't really matter if I use rather known characters or something, or mixing up different Anime/VN universes etc.

It's mostly about having resources for the VN as of right now.

Ren'py is updated on a regular basis, and if you have trouble using it / understanding an error, it's pretty easy to get help. It's been a couple years since Novelty was updated, and its dedicated forum is rather quiet.

There are other free visual novel engines, such as KiriKiri and NScripter, but it might be difficult to find support and advice for them, especially in English. Also, consider looking through video game engines that are currently available.
