A game during the Sengoku era

Recommended Posts

I finished Sengoku Rance and i really enjoyed it, i found that i really like the Sengoku era. Katanas, conquering and stuffs. So i would like to ask you guys if you know other games that run around that era.

While it doesn't have to be a VN, it has to be a pc game, though being a VN would be a +. Being a gameplay RPG would be +++.

By the way, i can't read Japanese so i'm asking for English translated games.

Well you didn't specify that it needed to be in English, so:

https://vndb.org/v1967- Sangoku rather than Sengoku, but you should still like it, it's the same sort of deal. Has some gameplay in the form of battles, but you can't lose them and they don't take too long. There's a translation on this forum which should be out in some months. I really like it. Ryo Fu <3

https://vndb.org/v13188- Sengoku Koihime. Made by BaseSon, same as above, but set in the Sengoku era. Main char in this one is the nephew of the protag in the above. Just as his uncle time-slipped to Sangoku era, the protag here time slips to the Sengoku era. You follow Oda, and Konami is the best girl. Doesn't have any gameplay. Really nice VN. Hope they make a sequel, and not go down the Moeshouden route of Sengoku, because those are pointless.

https://vndb.org/v16629- Newest release in the Sengoku Hime series. I personally don't think it's that great (I think Sengoku Rance was terrible, as an fyi), but it is popular, and it's basically just like Rance, in that you start off with territories, and you expand out taking more areas. You can choose your starting faction from many of the biggest clans at the time. All SLG gameplay here.

https://vndb.org/v12260- Again, not specifically the Sengoku era, it's set in the 1800s. ChuuShingura is a famous story, you can read about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty-seven_Ronin. No gameplay. It follows the real story very well, but also throws in some time-slipping stuff. It is pretty faithful to the original for what it does, and does throw some really interesting connections to the real story. Hashimoto's story for instance with Ohatsu, compared to their real versions (don't want to spoilerz it). And I have to say, the pacing and the story are amazing. I rate this as the best VN I've ever played actually. I was really blown away at how they managed to keep the story interesting throughout, without it getting boring, pacing very well done. It's entirely kinetic, very long, and there's very few H-scenes in it, which is really a plus in my opinion, as it didn't really "corrupt" the story (too much) for the sake of sex. Really really well-made. Again, it's old-timey Japan, all about samurai and the code of the samurai, and seeking revenge.

https://vndb.org/v12033- This one is a bit more of a stretch maybe. It's an SLG like Sengoku Rance, but set on the world stage, not just Japan. You go around conquering the world, and each faction has heroes from all times in it. The English faction has King Arthur and the Round Table for instance. America has Christopher Columbus and Billy the Kid. EU has Napoleon, Da Vinci and Marie Antoinette. China has Lu Bu and Sun Tzu etc etc. So it goes all over, it's not just swords, there's magic and everything too. Again, all SLG gameplay. It's not bad, there's also an English interface translation for it on HongFire.

yeah kelebek is right when it comes to chusingura, absolutely awesome ride through sengoku era, tons of very likeable characters, lots of fights & bloodshed. a must read in my eyes.
also my favourite novel

edit: have to note, that its reading difficulty level is quite high, definitely nothing for beginners in japanese

When you say that is doesn't have to be a VN, can it be any sort of game ? A like the " way fo the samurai " series. Well, it's a beat them all in feudal japan. But is particularity is that you can make your own choice, and there are a lot of different endings to discover. I think that only the 4th is available on PC.

How about inspired by feudal Japan? Utawarerumono sort of fits that bill. It sort of takes a mishmash of different cultural influences, Ainu being one of the biggest, but set in a larger feudal japan-esque setting with many warring states, feudal politics and diplomacy, etc. It's from 2002 but the art definitely still holds up.

edit: Haha, I just looked at the character section and forgot how incomprehensible some of these names are, even more than the game title which I can at least pronounce. "Amururineuruka"  :michiru:

yup try utawarerumono out, very nice one & found it better than its anime adaption. though the h-scenes are a bit....you know...
& if everything fails, there´s still the possibility to buy some popcorn, a sixpack beer, shut yourself in & enjoy the "Kozure Okami" series on tv.

If you want actual games (none of these are VNs):

Dynasty Warriors series. Made by Koei, hack and slash game series. From DW4 onwards, all but DW6 I think, are available on PC. All are available in English except DW7 as well. DW8 came out not too long ago, so you can try that.

Total War: Shogun 2. Set in feudal Japan, it's a grand conquest type game. You have to conquer Japan. The combat is much more strategic and involved than something like Sengoku Rance, as the combat is one of the main focuses of the game. If you like this type of game, then try Rome Total War (the first one), because that one's definitely the best they've made.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Again made by Koei, and again Sangoku era, and is also a grand strategy game. This one's all about the management and strategy side of things, and not the combat.

Nobunaga's Ambition. This series is basically the Sengoku version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Again made by Koei (can you tell they like these eras? :P) All about strategy, and you have to conquer Japan. I'm not sure how many of these are available in English, but I read just the other day that the latest one, Souzou, is coming to the west this year I believe.

I think there were some more, but I've forgotten.
