  1. ...what's the reason for people to play VNs? I'm really interested on what people find interesting of them. From a clinical point of view, it feels as if most of its elements can be equally found on anime/manga, but I know there's something else in them that makes them distinguishable, but I can't really tell what it exactly is, other than the 1st person narration/point of view. Care to enlighten me? :3

I think there was a thread about that in VN Talk, you might want to read it. Should not be hard to find, the forum is like, 4 page deep.

For me, basically, VNs add up the immersive elements of animation/games (CG, sounds) and the narrative/plots of fiction books. Plus the amount of character development and its quality is awesome, which gives a lot of impact to the later scenes.

  2. Hi, and welcome here!

My first guess would that you're overthinking it. There are tons of reasons for you to end up in bad endings without it being related to your mindset/social skills/whatever.

First one, the people who did the game were not trying to do a hyper-realistic simulation of real life. The choices you have to make to get the good endings are not necessarily the most logical ones or the most common ones.

Second one, you are not the exact same character that you are playing, nor the guy who wrote the VN. Therefore you yourself won't do the same choices, and it happens so that your choices leads to a bad end. The problem is not with you, the problem is that it's a story that have a determined direction.

A third thing I can see: you say you end up with the energetic type while focusing on the troubled character. I don't know about Katawa Shoujo but I definitely see you're talking about Sharin no Kuni here. The thing is, the story of the second chapter is centered around Sachi and focusing on Natsumi isn't going to change much. Focusing on a specific heroin will only change some scenes and the epilogue (in this particular VN).

Overall, don't be too concerned about this. Not all the VNs have very dynamic stories where a lot changes if you make certain choices etc. and when there are, i can guarantee that focusing on a heroin will get you involved with her for sure. If you get bad ends, it's often a question of one choice, that is not necessarily a logic one, it's just the one that makes the story go on.

That might also have to do with the kind of games you're playing. KS and SnK have plot-oriented stories. You should maybe try more simulation-oriented VNs (don't have recommendations though, i prefer plot-heavy VNs)

  3. Ok, since there's a topic, let's do this:

VN Name: Cartagra (or anything from Innocent Grey)

    VNDB link: http://vndb.org/v515

Is there already a TLWiki project for this: nope

    Hack/no hack: I don't know that, sorry.

Why do you want it to be TLed:

Because Kara no Shoujo is the most awesome VN i've played so far. I loved everything in it. Yet it's the only Innocent Grey game that has been TLed, and i'm being teased by hearing that their other VNs are awesome too, and soon enough Kara no Shoujo 2 will come out and i'll be butthurt again. Plus characters from KnS are in this too.

    Other info :

However, it should be noted that there was an attempt to TL this a few years ago, but Innocent Grey kicked in and said 'stop doing this we don't want you filthy gaijin playing our games' (well i'm over-exaggerating but i'm that much pissed off). So we only get KnS because MangaGamer did it. Seriously, fuck them, i'm willing to buy the overpriced japanese game if need be but let it be TLed.

  4. Or at the very least, a thread named "VNs you'd like to see translated". I was, in fact, thinking of making one like that earlier this week.

It already exists! Or so I recall. I remember posting in it, it should still be around there

If it's just in one topic it might be fine, but if everyone starts to post around saying 'i want xx translated' there's going to be a flood soon enough. It's not like TLing a VN was a simple request.

  5. Finished Sharin no Kuni yesterday. A bit under G-senjou no Maou but still really really good (though I expected more of the end).

I thought I might work on my huge backlog of 'games I should have played' like Katawa shoujo, or a Key VN, or Never17, but I decided to overcome the horrible sprites and play Higurashi.

Now I remember why I loved the anime. Even the slice of lives parts are really taking.

  6. Overall the Internet seems to agree that Tae Kim is the best when your goal is to learn japanese rather quickly. I read it in my ongoing process to learn japanese and thought it's good and well explained, but maybe it lacks exercises to practice. It's the most concise one i think though.

Another one i saw mentioned too is Genki.

Those are for beginners though. If you already know japanese and want to improve to get to the translation level (which i couldn't figure out from your post ^^"), you probably need more advanced books. I saw a book recommendation some time ago but lost it. Here is another:

    *forget that, link died.

A book I found to be recommended as an excellent grammar book, written in japanese.

  7. Mediafire folder with some of my Japanese resources, the password for every file is "fuwa", not much right now, but I will be adding more later. At the moment it consists of the 1st and 2nd year 教育漢字 for anki, and a grammar cheat sheet.

This is great, especially the grammar sheet. I made my own grammar sheet out of Tae Kim's guide after reading it but wasn't satisfied with it, this is really helpful.

    Thanks.

  8. Usually I listen to various types of metal, but also some anime/VN OSTs.

I think the latter would suit more the tastes of people here :P

So, this is a track from what is already one of the best anime OST ever, Evangelion 3.0 OST by Shiro Sagisu:

I can only invite you to download the whole OST and listen to it, it's pure epicness. I'm shivering just at the thought of seeing the movie with those tracks in it B) (Still 5 months to go...)

  9. I went in through one of the other most common entry doors: Fate/Stay Night.

I had friends that kept talking about Type-Moon stuff, so I decided last summer to give a shot to the VN because the anime was so disappointing. Even though I kept telling me while playing that this VN had lots of flaws, it was a wonderful experience, so I just kept going since then.

I guess the way most people get into VNs is through the ones that are discussed outside of VN communities, that is Type-Moon VNs, Key VNs that were adapted into animes and stuff like that, Katawa Shoujo that made quite a lot of noise when it came out, and Saya no Uta because Urobuchi got kinda popular recently with F/Z anime adaptation and Madoka.

  10. We really need a misc thread to gather all the stuff like this.

I laughed at the second half ^^' Like having a quantum computer will give your browser some extra special abilities...

Well tbh, most of the first half is probably random guesses though.

  11. Hm, we do not seem to be talking about the same thing here, I might have used the wrong word. What I meant by 'review' was really just telling what did you like/dislike and why. Doesn't have to be very long and convoluted and professional, just more elaborate than a few lines hastily thrown without argument, enough to support the mark you give. I see it done and do it myself for animes all the time and everything works fine.

The advantage of having a specific place to write it is that when you post on the topic, everything is scattered all around and lost between conversations, it's really about doing something synthetic about what people think.

    And of course, it's spoiler-free.

  12. The closest thing I can come up with for that kind of thing would be adding a 'review' section in the website or the forum.

Something that would allow members to post a constructed review of a VN with a /10 (or /whatever) rating.

By doing this, if at least one person here read a certain VN he can tell everyone what he thinks about it, and other people can then decide based on the review(s) if they want to read it or not.

Imposing the review to be constructed in order to give a mark would avoid the brainless rating and the 'binary rating' inconsistencies (I liked this VN i'll give it 10/10, didn't like this one read 3 lines i'll give it 0/10...).

Of course we still can't rank/award VNs if there are not enough reviews, 3 seems like a bare minimum... But that would still serve the recommendation part.

  13. Welcome!

50 kanji/day? You shall be named a true warrior if you indeed keep up with that pace!

I think Tay and the others are already spending like 2 hrs a day with a 25 kanji rythm... and it's just the beginning! As the reviews are growing exponentially (well not actually exponentially, I thought about doing the maths here but was too lazy to do it).

If you have that much free time, you can also read moar VNs ^^"

  14. But to date, there is no translation group that willingly translates a game unless someone else isn't already doing it.

Actually, there is, but it's more like the exception confirming the rule. Commie and Cokesakto (guy that translated the Kara no Kyoukai LN) are both working on Mahoutsukai no Yoru. It's not really 'competitive', Commie guys said that Cokesakto's TL of the demo sucked, but he doesn't seem to give a fuck.

Overall, I think you're right, but having only one translator doing the whole thing does help to keep the translation consistent and coherent, with someone doing edit/QC after. Crowdsourced translation is a great idea because there are people out there willing to participate but not having the time/resources to do the whole translation, but it does lead to TL inconsistencies and people randomly putting machine-translated and incoherent lines, thus slowing down the whole process. (Of course the Annot system helps dealing with those issues).

I do realize however that people doing the TL alone are mainly doing it for the e-peen.

  15. Welcome there!

It's not really the same type as the other VNs you mentioned here but Kara no Shoujo is really awesome and does fit into the 'dark stuff' thing.

On the same kind of stuff, but much more horror/gore you have Saya no Uta.

As for romance, uh, well... there are people out there that know much more than me about those.
