  1. I did come across one recently, but that was with a male lead. Usually you just search VNDB for that sort of thing. The score on the left is how much of that genre/tag is included in the game and the Rating on the right is what other people thought of the game. Adding female protagonist to the list makes it smaller. You can also try searching through https://nepchan.org/ .

  2. Most AI API providers assume you can write basic code yourself. Even though about a year and a half has passed since AI really took off, this is still very early in terms of software development since software development takes time, especially for quality software. There are not a lot of good options right now, and almost all of them require tinkering and being very familiar with the particulars of both the model you are using and the API you are working with. A short 100 line python program could do it, but you would have to plug in your data manually and format it or whatever.

    Some examples are DazedMTLTool, Translator++, SLR Translator, and a handful of other projects on github in various states of development. Dazed is ChatGPT only. Translator++ is DRM'd paid software that requires constant internet connection to validate your patreon account, the AI addons cannot be used otherwise. SLR Translator is not yet released but should have some AI addons shortly after it is released. Shortly means like within a few months.

    DeepL has also started to incorporate AI into their API as well, so you can just submit a prompt that has extra information for DeepL to consider when generating their output. They are not currently charging for this but like... they are going to very soon, so use it while you can. DeepL is free for the first 500k characters/month. All other APIs are paid/rate limited. If you want to do unlimited, then you basically have to run AI yourself locally using KoboldCpp or similar programs and write your own software to interface with it. That said, IDK of any software that has working DeepL API + prompt translations working, so you are back to writing it yourself territory there.

    If you just want basic translations, NMTs are much easier to use. Personally use my repackage for the Sugoi v4 NMT model. It has an easy to use Web UI written by one of the server authors, so I just dump the raw text in there and get it back right away. But NMT models, like Sugoi v4, are not AI obviously, they are the precursor to contemporary AI. They are basically free though 500+ lines in ~30s to calculate w/CUDA, and they provide a good basis to create edited MTL patches as long as you are willing to take a bit of time to format the output yourself.

    Edited MTL is better quality than AI generated TLs because it means a human looked at the output, so do not look down on NMTs too much. Just because AIs are the superior successor technology does not mean they produce superior output without A LOT of fiddling and certainly they do not compare well against edited NMT translations at all.

    In terms of quality: Human translator > Edited MTL (AI or NMT) > MTL (AI) > MTL (NMT) > MTL (Dictionary)
    In terms of cost and ease of use: MTL (Dictionary) > MTL (NMT) > MTL (AI) > Edited MTL (AI/NMT) > Human translator

  3. The game will almost certainly crash if you do it the way you described.

    It would probably be a better idea to 1) extract both scripts, the original Japanese script and the English remake
    2) MTL the original Japanese, and then
    3) replace the original MTL'd lines with the lines extracted from the newer release one line at a time manually.

    Otherwise you are asking for problems. If you need help doing 1 or 2, I can help out, but #3 is a fully manual process.

    Relationships: "Muv-Luv Altered Fable" is a 2007 fandisc of "Muv-Luv Alternative", 2006. The fandisc was re-released as "Muv-Luv Photonmelodies♮" in 2020 on steam as an all-ages version. Basically, they censored everything, so the original fan-translated version is better, which the OP is working on.

    If you just want to play the games, there is software like Textractor, Sugoi Toolkit, MTool, and other translation technologies that help extract and MTL the text in real time. Do you just want to see the scene, or are you dedicated to releasing a patch instead?

    Muv-Luv Supplement, 2004, is https://vndb.org/v404 and there is an official English version already called "Muv-Luv Photonflowers*", 2019, but without any 18+ content. There is also a partial patch for Muv-Luv Supplement with these release notes:

    "This is a partial patch of Muv-Luv Supplement [2004] as it is only translated the side story Muv-Luv Duelist. As some things could not be translated due to the engine, you may want to check the guides and manuals inside of the patch folder.

    What exactly is your skillset? Are you re-translating stuff? Are you an editor doing edited MTL? I am more of a programmer. I would offer to playtest, but those games are way too long for that.

  5. Illusion does not really sell their games outside of Japan, and they went out of business I think? DMM might have it at dmm.co.jp but their website requires signing up so I cannot provide a direct link to the product page.

    Once you have finished buying it somewhere, somehow, I found this interesting project to translate it. The project has a youtube video showing how to buy it from dmm and patch it.

    ScrewThisNoise as a repack of it as well. The repack works fine as-is.

  6. It is not directly comparable, but you might want to consider Emotion Creators.

    It is still focused towards creating female models, but the male models also have some customization possible. Emotion Creators is not so much a game as much as it is a game engine. You can define the characters in a scene and the scenes themselves to create a Visual Novel like experience but also including 3D interactive R18 scenes. That would let you create the scenes yourself after the initial learning curve.

    So anyway, Somewhere in the kirikiri game engine there is a parser that only reads either shift-jis or UTF-16 BOM LE and the core engine game code was written in shift-jis or utf-16 bom le. For kirikiri games to be made region free, the encoding for the files for a game probably needs to be updated to utf-16 bom le and that game engine code updated to the same or ascii. Updating everything to utf-8 would be ideal, especially for translation purposes, but that might be more complicated/impossible.

     

  8. Oh that is odd. Which version are you playing. The original or the re-write? You could always switch versions to see if that fixes it. Are you running it with a JPN locale emulator, EN locale, or the locale changed? What OS?

    So that series does not have an official English release. The only English translations available for it are patches and there are 2 versions of the game. That crazy long game (~65h30m) was also re-written from the ground up at some point so there are both patches for the original and partial patches for the rewrite floating around.

    Are you sure you applied the right patch to the right version? The only fully completed TL is an MTL from before the studio released a rewrite for the series. The post-rewrite script only has a GPT-3.5 MTL for the prologue only, not the entire series. Sugoi visual novel does not have an updated patch for that game or any votes.

    At this point, you have a few options. As always, that is learn Japanese first. Your secondary options are all bad.

    • Learn Japanese
    • Contract whoever made the patch and ask them about the error.
    • Use Texractor, or another real time script extraction tool, after reverting the translation patch so the game is in Japanese and/or re-MTL the series from a vanilla release. Transferring your save data should be fairly simple provided you use the same version of the game, pre or post rewrite.
    • Dump the script manually and write your own patch.

    I am unable to duplicate your issue. The game works fine on Windows 10 21H2 x64 for me after using a JPN locale emulator using an nvidia graphics card and SVGA graphics. It did not need any compatibility settings, or the region itself changed. Just the locale emulator was enough, but the game launched (with corrupted characters displaying) even without the locale emulator being used. What OS are you using? What GPU are you using?

    It does ask for configuration options on first launch and will not work properly without clicking past that? Do you perhaps have two monitors or something? It might have launched on the second monitor even if you disconnected it at some point. Some software is quirky that way sometimes. Reconnecting that monitor would allow you to move the window back to the main monitor if this obscure situation applies.

    You can get the game to refresh its display settings by deleting its save data folder. At that point, it should ask you to run through through setup again. There was a report that hitting the Escape key twice selects uses the default options, but so does just saying "no" twice.

    The only thing I can think of that might be causing your issue if the above did not work is intel Arc graphics cards. Those are known to have compatibility problems with all software, including visual novels. If that is the case, a graphics driver update might help, but only for Intel Arc cards. Nvidia/Intel integrated graphics/AMD Radeon graphics are usually stable at release in comparison.

    Edit: Just as an afterthought, there are reports of Lune games not working on intel Arc, but there was no reported fix. You could try messaging them to see if they ever found a fix.

  11. The merged script does both. It uses your code to act on all files in a directory, which is more than just mildly terrifying, and it uses the regex/re syntax to use the best library available using the simplified syntax that replaces strings in those .xlsx files to a maximum of 3 of any common ascii letter.

    According to the Python documentation, 'regex' is a third party library with the same API as the standard library regular expression library 're'.  're' is being imported but renamed to 'regex', if the third party library 'regex' is not available, so the actual code does not have to worry about using 're' or 'regex'. They have the same API anyway. You can install regex with 'pip install regex'

    If you copy/paste the merged code, it should work. It is just the simplified version of the code you wrote earlier for dealing with repetitions in Sugoi. Also, did you ever get Textractor to work with Sugoi or another translation extension for local translation?

  12. That is a really obscure configuration, so obscure that I cannot test it myself. The only advice I would give is that locale emulators do not work at all for Eushully games from my experience. Did you try changing the locale to Japan-Japanese?

    Locale emulators are fine for almost all cases, but there are always some odd programs that require the locale itself changed. Changing the locale does not change the display language.

  13. Okay some more background information about this problem just to try to make sense of everything.

    - For the remastered version developed by Nitroplus, it is available on both Steam and JAST USA.
    - The steam version was released on Aug, 12, 2019, and it also has a Chinese localization by Kagura Games. Not sure about the JAST version.
    - On Aug 13, 2019, JAST released a free update patch for the original Saya no Uta that supposedly changes/changed the game to the remastered version including the game engine. Compared to the original, JAST says the remastered has better CGs, a better translation,  Win10 compatibility, and an obnoxious script.npk format on a new game engine. Maybe it is the same engine but they updated the game engine version? I have not tested JAST's upgrade patch to test JAST's claims yet, but might later.
    - JAST says the release version is May 05, 2013, but it is not clear if this date is for JAST's original localization of Saya no Uta or for the remastered version. Probably this is the release date for their original version, but I am not sure.
    - VNDB says the game engine for the new remastered version is Diesel Engine of which there are quite a few translations available, but I have not looked through that list to see if any of those translation involve unofficial patches yet. If they do, then that is proof that some method already exists to patch the game engine to load custom scripts.
    - Both Steam and JAST's remastered versions use the same .npk format to pack the script.npk file indicating they are likely both on same game engine version despite any superficial differences in marketing.
    - However, those superficial differences in the game engine are a substantial difference in content since the Steam version is censored because Steam. JAST has a DLC/patch available to fix the Steam version. In other words, the Steam release should be avoided due to censorship, which is pretty typical of Steam + VNs in general.
    - Garbro recognizes this *.npk format and, besides none, has 3 existing decryption schemes for it, Minikui Mojika no Ko, Sonicomi, Tokyo Necro, but nothing works on the script.npk file.
    - There is this person on steam that claims 'It's possible to patch the game, since it uses the same NPK2 archive format that Tokyo Necro and Sonicomi uses. The only thing is, the encryption must be cracked.' -Exciel
    - The ascii/string header for the script.npk file in a hex editor is NPK2, 4E 50 4B 32 02 00 00 00 , or NPK2 'STX'.

    Conclusions:
    - The next step towards developing a patch for the remastered version is to look through the Diesel Engine list to see if any version has an unofficial patch available for the script files.
    - Then either 1) obtain the Diesel Engine and see if it can unpack the script.npk file or 2) reverse engineer the obfuscation and or encryption in the script.npk to unpack it. Repacking should be possible by using the original game engine, or just reverse engineering that packing process too.

    The alternative way to patch this game is to use the original version instead, which seems to be fully open source?, instead of the remastered version that uses .npk. Besides CGs, there does not appear to be any major content differences. The difference in translation quality does not matter if translating it again. The Win 10 compatibility thing seems more like a marketing gimmick that should be easily fixable for the original version somehow.
