  1. Elsewhere High - Chapter 1

Welcome to Elsewhere High, "a school for exceptional children."

In this visual novel, players are able to immerse themselves in the world of the outcast. Each student at Elsewhere High has fallen short of expectations at their original high school; they've flunked out, skipped class, wrote threatening notes, or grew to be a reprehensible bully. The only prerequisite to admission is failure. Friendships spawn, and feuds arise, but amidst the teen drama and angst it quickly becomes clear that Elsewhere is much, much more than it seems.

Chapter one is the first chapter in a planned multi-chapter series that is releasing absolutely free of charge. Subsequent chapters will be sold at a small cost.

Elsewhere High is also running a Greenlight campaign over on Steam! If you'd like to support this project, please consider giving it an upvote on Greenlight. You can reach it's page here:

The first chapter will take fast readers about an hour to complete, and slow readers upward of two hours. The novel is mostly kinetic: it offers the reader choices in dialogue and optional scenes, but ultimately will lead all readers to the same place.

So, with all of that said, if you'd like to check out the first chapter of Elsewhere High, here is a link to the download page hosted at itch.io!

I had the same feeling. But... Penholder seems so nice... why not try it, right?

Edit: oops, forgot to comment. Can you share more info, such as setting, plot, genre and other stuff about the game? It would help a lot to decide if we knew it.

Sure :) I added a link to the greenlight page which has the description and screenshots and info! Here it is again :)

  3. Hey there!

So my vn has been done for quite some time... I just haven't been able to release it because I can't find testers. I just need a few people to download the VN from the site (itch) and tell me if it works. Because there's a fairly good chance I did something wrong along the way and need to fix something up. PC and Mac users needed! :)

Here's the link to the itch page, the password is elsewhere

Seems like it could be interesting. The trailer doesn't give away much, but the backgrounds looks good, and the little that is said sounds intriguing.

Can you say anything about what kind of genre this VN is in?

    Will the game be voiced?

Does the player get choices through the story, or is it like a kinetic novel?

Anyways, best of luck with the project.

    Hey!

    Thanks for your response.

I can definitely answer those for you. The genre is a mashup of teen-drama, mystery and light fantasy. Overall, I am hoping to make it about the people in the novel and the human relationships that they form. All of that is wrapped up in a situation completely drenched in conflict and mystery. There is a bunch to uncover.

As of now, the game will not be voiced. If each chapter is successfully financed and release, there will be (about) 10 of them, which means a lot could happen from then to now, so I will never say never.

And finally, I think Elsewhere High falls somewhere in between the two. There are choices the player(reader?) can make, and these choices allow them to see scenes or conversations that they wouldn't see if the other choice is selected. However, I do have a specific story to tell, and I know that arc that I am looking for the novel to take. And so, at least in Chapter 1, the choices don't lead to any alternate endings or revelations. They just provide different routes through the same story - a different path to the same destination.

A good example is this: in an early scene the main character is acquainted with two fellow students at the school. They let him know that they have a few free minutes before class starts and so the player has a choice to spend the remaining time before class with new student A or new student B. So there is definitely choice involved in that sense :)

    Thanks again for your reply!

  5. Hey there!

I am super new to VNs but as soon as I discovered them I knew that I needed to create one of my own.

It has been months in the making but I am finally ready to announce my VN. It is called Elsewhere High and chapter 1 is coming out very soon (no firm release date yet.) The first chapter is actually going to be released for free, with subsequent chapters being sold for a small cost. It will be released on Android devices through Google Play, and on PC and Mac through itch.io.

I put together a small trailer for the first chapter and will post it here. I don't want to give away too much about the plot, but I'm sure I will answer any general questions if any get left in the comments. Let me know if there's any specific information that I should include/release in anticipation for the launch as I am quite new to all of this. Thanks so much for taking time to read this and have a good one. :)

Using a real person's face (your own?) for an avatar is perceived as odd in this community.  Just an FYI.  Most people here value anonymity, especially due to the association of visual novels with adult content.

Noted, I'll change it right away!

And sorry for the typo in the title... I was multitasking :|

  7. Hi there!

My name's Cody, I'm from Toronto and I am excited to get plugged into this community.

I have a background in game design. I have always wanted to tell new and interesting stories through some sort of interactive media. I'm still confident that I will work in the game design field, but for now I have wound up here. I am really passionate about stories that challenge people and make them think about things in different ways. That being said, I think that adding a layer of interactivity to storytelling just compounds its impact ten fold.

And so, when I found it time to dive deep into my next writing project, I began researching different ways I could present it. I often write things and then they just stay written. But with this story, I knew I wanted to actually create something with the writing. It just sort of called for that. So I did a bunch of research and reading and writing, and stumbled upon these things called visual novels. It took me a bit, but I'm sold, and am creating one now! :)

I'm not sure if I should include things about myself in this post, or what those things should be, so I'll just haphazardly throw facts at you.
Umm... I love movies! I went to film school for a while. Love Oscar bait films - The Tree of Life is my favourite movie.
I also went to game design school. My favourite game is a toss up between Final Fantasy X and The Last of Us (imo the pinnacle of Japanese and western game design, respectively.)
As a day job, I am a server and supervisor at a restaurant.
I lived abroad in Tokyo for a year, that was cool!
Umm... blue is a pretty colour?

Nice to meet all of you! And I hope I can look forward to your feedback and help in my journey of creating a VN (in another thread of course).

    Bye for now! :)
