  1. Ok, this will be my last explanation. Realism: Superman in Man of Steel has a conflict whether to kill his own specie or not. Bizarre: Superman in the old movie was able to turn back time by spinning the whole world backwards out of nowhere without any explanation. Got it?

FMA & FMA:B was realistic because it has good grounding of story and characters have right human reactions and back story.

  2. You saying between FMA and FMA:B? Or in releasing the entire first season?

You must have fallen asleep during FMA. The plot is entirely unrealistic right from the beginning. And sorry, I just can't stand listening to teachers who repeat the same thing over an over again with different words. And if you had known me, you'd never say I was 'mainstream'. I go against what most people like because in my opinion they are idiots for wasting the time to watch the entire ~800 episodes of One Piece.

I can understand the loli, not the meditation. It's not like it's Pearly and Maya you're meditating with.

I have already explained the terms but you still can't comprehend. Sigh, I won't argue anymore.

  3. Plot.+Anime+is+called+Maoyuu+Maou+Yuusha

I wouldn't mind marrying that plot.

PLOT! Wehehehehe... Just joking I like PLIT or no sound at all if you know what I mean... XD

...First of all, I have yet to ever see an anime that comes close to mimicking real life. FMA is one of the worst in this aspect. Also, I agree with your "comedy balances negativity", but there is too much negativity and not enough comedy near the endgae. And it would be all well and good, if it started out just as serious.

Realism, means that the story is presented with real human experience (i.e. presented with issues that is present in ordinary humans and characters respond them in a human way). In contrary, bizarre means basically random stuff that has no basis and is not related to real  human experience. Please stay awake in your literature class. Sigh, I can't handle mainstream people bashing rare master piece.

    P.S.

There are animes that mimics real life literally and these genre is called slice-of-life... Damn please watch more animes and please read more stuffs.... Sigh...

I shall meditate with lolis to take away my negative emotions... LOLI... LOLI.... LOLI.... LOLI!!!!!!

  4. FMA is literary good since it gives a realistic feeling towards human nature (issues regarding existentialism, morality, ethics, and psychology). It's good to have comedy/humor (fyi: comedy originally refers to a plot that ends with a marriage) every now and then to counterbalance some negative feelings. However too much humor is bad since it will go beyond the ordinary experience of a normal human person. In other words, too much comedy will make things go bizarre since it's unrealistic!!!! I demand moderate humor!!!!

You just activated my Wild Bare mode!!!!

I need lolis to recuperate my level 1 rage... XD

  5. Wow, katawa shoujo is really popular huh? I guess it's because it's free and is english ready. My first VN was true love. Yeah DOS game for the record! I stumble this game while searching for an H-game (specifically flash games). I really like the game play where in you hone your stats (you are to choose which activity you will do in morning, afternoon, evening to improve your intelligence, fashion, strength, or fatigue) and these things will decide which heroine you will end-up. I hope a visual novel will revive this game-play.

  6. I like heroines with deep personalities and these can't evolve without some sort of a solid trigger. Traumatic backstories and troubled pasts often accompany them like a shadow.

Yippee... He showed his dere side!!!! ヾ(。⌒∇⌒)ノ

Yup I agree on your taste. As I have stated earlier, back story makes a character meaningful and triggers your empathy towards them. It gives a believable/near-realistic (because it explains their behavior) character that will let you be engrossed in the story. The right word for that literary technique is called characterization (building the character). XD

  7. I personally like various types of VN personalities when it comes to VN 'love interests'.

To be honest it is hard to find a 'favourite' kind of personality per se, but I like characters with deep, emotional (preferably dark or depressing) backstories.

The specific personality of the character is secondary to me however, so it can vary and keep me interested.

The reason for my desire for a 'deep backstory' is simply to relate me better to the character and keep me hooked and interested in learning their 'deep dark secrets'.

This desire is what keeps Grisia one of my favourite VNs, followed swiftly (or possibly tying) by Ayakashibito and Katawa Shoujo. The common theme of these being a dark, emotional, backstory to the love interests.

    Soooo, that's me I guess.

I agree... Back story makes a character meaningful and triggers your empathy towards them. Have you tried Yume Miru Kusuri? If not, i recommend that to you since each character have deep back stories which will move you... XD

  8. You're dwelving into a dangerous territory, man. Fictional characters aren't supposed to become your love interests.

I'm not sure whether you're simply talking about character traits, or something more. Just like with protagonists, a lot of heroines are often flat (and by that I don't simply mean being flat-chested), two-dimensional and written in the kind of way, that serves it's purpose only as the background for the work itself. They are created to suit the reader's tastes, as most of eroge simply serves to satisfy their peculiar needs ("girl's galore" games, as we often call it). Like with everything, exceptions happen, but they are rare. I'm not simply talking about traits - if you're looking at those characters like that, then it's perfectly fine. But the issue arises when you try to relate to them on a personal level; most writers fail tremendously when that happens. It's quite repulsive, to be honest.

I like when writers put effort in the characters they create. When you read a novel, and see them as living, breathing beings with their own share of problems; when story gives them a definite reason to exist in the first place, instead being just a bunch of preety girls protagonist can toy with, you know they did a good job. Sadly, the vast majority of visual novels aren't like that.

I understand  where you come from. But don't be a spoilsport, he only pertains to his ideal girl. I got 2 girlfriends even if I'm an otaku who loves loli. So otakus are not helpless people. You're always a negative person. I think you must relax your stiff shoulder and be hugged with my bear hug...if you're a loli girl... Come on show us your dere side once in a while... Gwehehehehe.... > ^_^<

  9. Everything depends on the character in my opinion. It varies from game to game because I am more judging towards characters. I can dislike characters just because their stance or how they talk normally. No matter what type of girl it is. Everything depends on so many things. Hard to explain in words.

Do you mean the holistic factor or the characterization of the heroine? Yup, I agree that you will fall in love with heroines when her role was played well.

However in this topic, we are asked what kind of character do you usually incline to? Or let me rephrase, what character type are you turned-on to? It's like asking if you're a opai person (big boob lover) or petanko person (flat chested lover)? I love flat chested girls!!!! XD

  10. From what I see here (which is only based on a few trips to Akiba and second-hand information of my own), the people buying stuff are from rather diverse age categories.

One often accepted reason that 30 yo guys would like VNs/anime is that for the average salaryman, those are means of escapism, and the golden age of your life in Japan is often considered to be your high-school days (because of how monotonous and tedious/alienating (can't find my words here) salaryman work can be).

Of course those products are also heavily consumed by late teens/young adults, because anime can be watched on TV and games bought second-hand (and all of that can be pirated). But the producers care and cater to those who are solvent, and 25-30 year old workers are among them - they're not the only one paying but they are an important part of the market.

Hmm... I understand... You have a very sound argument... I was defeated logically...

    For your reward:

  11. Anime (and probably VN too) are more targeted at 20-30 males (read: people who can buy expensive as fuck blurays/games) than teenagers.

    I was stand corrected!!! @_@

Just kidding, though I accept the fact that 20-30 males buy expensive blurays/games. However this is mainly because they have work and can buy themselves those blurays and games using their sallary. I was partaining to manga readers, and anime viewers who are free to watch and buy a manga magazine with their own allowance.... XD

Don't get me wrong guys that I don't like anime, manga, and visual novels. I just want to make a logic on why these things are like that. I actually love them all!!! And I don't care if they are "unrealistic" (age mismatched to characteristic) so long as I enjoy reading, watching, or playing with them!!!!!! I especially love lolis!!!!!!!!!!!! ヽ◕‿◕ノ

    My waifu... XD

  12. If that's true i don't think Japanese teenagers are your average stupid, they might be advanced stupid. Let's be honest, none of us were than dumb (ok maybe a few of you) enough for a someone to BLATANTLY show love to you and you fail to realize , doesn't that instinct kick in at some point? On the other hand i think Most westerners prefer the intelligent-sarcastic-villainous types because we are exactly that. If you check most Eastern cultures they aren't really as straightforward or as exposed to things we would pass of as normal, like calling someone by their first name or barging into someone's house because their mom can cook better than your's or even just walking up to a chick and saying you are interested right off the bat so having a VN character who wouldn't know the feelings of a dying cactus would well suit them.

You have a point but I think you slightly misunderstand some things. Check my reply to Rooke first.

As for western and eastern culture, I'm from asia (I won't tell where for privacy reason) and I also like intelligent-sarcastic-villainous types so your conclusion is a little bit wrong since it doesn't apply to all. Perhaps you're referring to liberated vs conservative. But bare in mind that their are different levels and types of "convservativism".

Western culture can be "generalize" as liberated.  I mean liberated as being able to easily grasp and follow the rules of human rights and have gender equality. Thus most western people are straightforward/frank. As for eastern people (including middle east and africa), the concept of "liberism/westernization" is not yet that openly embraced. They still remain in their old tradition depending on the place they live (I imply that culture are diverse). What I'm saying is you're right that the character in visual novel are reflected to culture but you're wrong that it is applied to all asians since culture is varied depending on the place. The characters in visual novel are refection of japanese culture mostly.

  13. Rule of thumb - the age of the main protagonist (in animes and VNs) roughly matches the age of the show's target audience in Japan. You get your exceptions, but on the whole it seems about right. It's not about being realistic but getting the target audience to relate to the protagonist, I assume.

It's a marketing strategy and an outlet to anti-social/bullied/problematic teenage to teenage at heart mangaka.

Remember that people who watch anime and read manga/visual novels are mostly teenage male kids. They are the counter part of teenage flick movies/series which are adored by teenage females. It's like tapping the right nerves of humans in order to sell their product.

Meanwhile, mangas are made by mangaka who submit their works to a publishing company. Weekly Shounen Jampu (aka shounen jump) is one of the famous publishing company that publishes different mangas from different mangaka who have a general genre which is of course by its name shounen (boy). Remember that humans have different copping mechanism for their problems. Mangaka found their coping mechanism by creating mangas. Thus it serves as an outlet for them keeping their sanity intact. This also applies to light novel and visual novels. Anime are usually derived from mangas, light novel, and visual novel. This is the reason why most stories are bizarre/unrealistic.

  14. Grisaia isn't exactly the last VN I read, although it is my favorite. However I had experienced this kind of behaviour but in reverse in another VN, Fate/Stay Night(Which I like almost as mch as Grisaia) and I liked that quite a lot. Sorry to disappoint you but I'm no loli, I'm a hairy dude.

Damn, he's a hairy dude... Well, my hypothesis was near. Damn almost. Favorite? It's so near. I need  to work on my deduction skills. Is Fate/Stay Night that good in terms of story and art? XD

  15. When they are mature/realist enough to know that sometimes there are unavoidable sacrifices and things like that it's even better, but it's also good that sometimes they go against their ideals and try to "save everyone" because it makes them flawed and hypocritical which makes them feel more human.

You have the "last-visual-novel-syndrome" (like the last-song-syndrome) ~~~~~~~ Grisaia no Kajitsu... How cute. It makes me want to hug you...if you're a loli girl... Gwehehehe... XD

Don't worry, I also have the "last-visual-novel-syndrome" which is majikoi... I also like the Grisaia no Kajitsu and how Yuuji's character grows in each heroine... XD

  16. If you hate them so much then why are you even still here reading VNs and watching Anime? at this point I can't tell if you are a hater, troll or both.

He's the scourge of the Fuwanovel forums. Someone needs to provide the much needed pessimism, so that optimism can fight and triumph over it, much more powerfully.

Personally, I prefer the intelligent, the kind, and the sarcastic protagonists, any combination of these traits would do.

Maybe he's a tsundere or the closet otaku... I can imagine his reaction... Gwehehe... XD

From the choices given I would say the intelligent-sarcastic type. One trait that I particularly like in MCs is the planning before taking action. I like those MCs that don't just try to plow through obstacles with force and recklessness and actually give some thought to their actions, if their composure is calm and cool almost all of the time even better.

Yup, tactician MC's are cooler.... It's like you always hit a jackpot when his strategy was successful! Unlike aggressive MC's who do things in the whim whenever they feel their blood is boiling and often commits a fatal blunder.... XD

  17. If you have access or read any/most of japanese works, that come out every month you wouldn't be making such statements. What we like on the west is nothing but a drop in the sea of crappiness. Current visual novels, where nearly everything at the moment turns out to be cheaply made moege, full of boobs and panty shots is a climax of years of highly increased market competition, cramped up within but a tiny space of possibilities.

That said I can't except any quality writing from high schoolers. In overall, it's not about what they want or would like to write about, but what market demands them to write.

I actually try to read most of them but it's impossible for me to read all that come out since there are a lot of mangas, and visual novels that comes out. And I just realized that there are also stuffs that are not yet translated. But I honestly admit that I'm actually picky in terms of priority of what to read first. I pick the ones that have good story (and lolis Gwheheheheheheheeeeeeeeee..... *heavy breathing).

And I actually agree on your premise that the works are "shounenish" (boys as a target customers). I actually have a discussion with my sister who is a writer and we come up to a conclusion that anime, manga, and visual novels are not realistic since age of the characters are mismatched. We mean mismatched as giving a particular character (usually protagonist) some responsibilities or characteristic that is not suited for his/her age (Example: A teenage kid who can solve crimes using his detective skills). Thus it gives an unrealistic feeling on the story.

  18. None. Most of modern protagonist archetypes are undeniably stupid and I'm not even talking about being plain dumb; being forced to look upon the world through their own eyes is the worst kind of torture, japanese developers unleash on their players. And "japanese" does not mean I'm favoring western creators, either. Their creations are simply off the charts in terms of stupidity. Rare exceptions happen in overall (at times quite unusual, to say the least), but in most cases there's little to none sympathy I feel to most of the protagonists, especially heores from that sea of mud "called" moege.

I have a little reflection on your statement. What if one of us was wrong or we are both wrong because we only play selected visual novel games? What if we only see a small picture of a larger picture and prejudge the whole thing just because of the small picture we just saw!!! @_@

  19. So I've encountered many visual novels and I observed that there are three common protagonist types in most VNs. These are intelligent but sarcastic ones, indecisive/dense idiot ones, and perverted idiot ones. So which among these types do you like to play as the protagonist? I always like to play as the intelligent sarcastic ones since they are always on the right side and are funny when being sarcastic.

Though I also like kind-intelligent protagonist (Wilfred of kamidori alchemy meister) and intelligent-villainous ones (Kyousuke of g-senjou no maou????), but the kind character is rare and unrealistic, and I play villainous ones if I just want to release my pent-up emotions (dark) but it always leave me a bad taste eventually and they are rare.
