What you need to do is to figure out which engine the VN is using and then see if you can find some extraction tool. Most engines have something like that already. You could then (hopefully) end up with txt files, which can be edited and with a bit of luck you can find some encoding tool as well. Usually the engine can be identified just by the filenames of the data files. If no extraction tool exist, then you... well pray that you find one.

Thank you for sharing some of your intellect with me.

    Engine huh... about that.

Here's the files that the game installs.

I'm guessing data.bin is where all the assets are since it's the highest file size.

But it's all gibberish in the hex editor

I think this means that it's a unique engine or something.

And when I dragged the .exe into arc_unpacker, it made 4 text files, 3 of which are unreadable

and one with some programming code

    Project team

It will just be me for now because I want to try hacking a game by myself, just to have some sort of accomplishment I guess haha.

Unless I get stuck to the point where I can't progress and nothing else is an option or someone else wants to join.

    Progress

First of all I don't know where to start. This is my first time attempting anything like this because I want to try and be able to hack into games.

I have minimum knowledge on how these types of projects work. I know hex editing is involved where you look at compiled code and change specific values in order to change string output. That's as far as I know. And from what I can tell with this game, when the .exe file is opened in a hex editor, no human readable text is visible.

First roadblock: Find a way see decode the script and figure out how to change the string values.

I have a solid understanding of Japanese already. I've played through the game multiple times already. There's nothing I don't understand in the written text.

I will also need to figure out how to extract assets from the main menu, translate them, edit the assets into english, and re-encrypt them.

Typing this out made me realize that this is probably impossible. But hey, I have nothing to lose, and it will be a great learning experience I hope.

I'll definitely be asking for help a whole lot in the Fan Translation Discussion forum when I get to work on the meat of the project. In the meanwhile I will be searching google for guides on more in depth hex editing tutorials.

Hello and welcome to Fuwanovel! :mare:

If you ever need recommendations, high-brow or otherwise, don't hesitate to ask. Also good luck with any TL projects you might take, this Chunsoft game actually looks pretty fun. :3

Thank you, I'll be looking around!

Hello, welcome to Fuwanovel! :sachi:Here is a link to the subforum dedicated to translation projects, so you can post about your translation project there.

Thanks for the link, but I'm hesitant on announcing the project since I'm not even a begginer on the technical side of things.

But would it be fine to post the project and see if any programmers would help?

  4. Nice to meet you. I go by juicedup.

I came up with the handle when I was 12, I was addicted to apple juice at the time and needed a handle. I haven't come up with a better one since.

    Anyways,

I come to fuwanovel because I seek a community with individuals who share my same passion for glorious VNs. I love VNs because they leave a much deeper impact than any form of media in my opinion.

I've played the usual 999, ace attorney and danganronpa that everyone's already played, but I'm looking for something a little more high brow maybe? I'm not sure myself honestly.

The other reason I'm here is because I want to try my hand at hacking English translations into VN games.

I know that a solid grasp of hex editing is required.

I already know quite a bit of Japanese, I have a youtube channel where I upload translation let's plays, It's nothing serious. I would say my Japanese level is at JLPT N2

Instead of just translating games by video I want to try and make a translation project. Maybe it's possible with a bit of help?

The game I'd like to translate and make an English patch for is called Kirigiri Sou.

    20161216023221.jpg

It's a spin off of Danganronpa starring my favirote character, Kirigiri.

It's a PC game that had a limited edition print that was only obtainable from the first copies of the blu ray of the anime, no one has attempted to translate it as far as I know.

I want to use this game as a test to see if I can figure out how to hex edit the text of games.

Anyway that's about it for my introduction.
