Steins;Gate - Issues with 'START' (SOLVED)

Are you running your computer with Japan system locale? (link to instructions): Yes

Game Name: Steins;Gate

Description of Problem: See below

Your Operating System: Windows 8

64 or 32 bit (link to how to find): 64

What did you already try? (Uninstall/Reinstall, Redownload, Run as admin, etc): Redownload, Run as admin, unchecking 'read only' under properties.

Did you download your game from Fuwanovel?: Yes

Hello again~

It appears I have encountered another error in a VN; this time being Steins;Gate.

I am able to load up the game and get to the main menu just fine (In addition to playing the openings after idling) however - upon pressing 'START', the game fades to black, and returns to the main menu screen.

I have looked up posts about the issue on the forums - and I have been able to find some similar issues:

However; neither of these appeared to have the solution.

The first involves swapping to Japanese Locale - which, as stated earlier, has already been done; so that does not appear to be the solution.

The second one involves setting the files outside of read-only - although this thread was never concluded, and thus does not have a decisive answer.

Upon right-clicking 'properties', the 'read-only' check is boxed with a square as opposed to a check, meaning only a portion of those are set to it. Upon unchecking read-only and exiting however; re-opening properties reveals that the box has returned.

I have made sure that the files are not still seeding and thus locked to read-only - in fact it is a habit of mine to uninstall uTorrent after I complete downloading the files. Additionally; upon examination - other games seem to have the box marked on 'read only' as well; except these games have no issues with saving, and have each been played a reasonable amount (The furthest being rewrite; which has gotten the Kotori route completed thus far) Thus, this leads me to believe read-only is not the issue which needs solving.

As a result - I am unable to discern what the issue could be. sdrt4280j has been run; although this does not appear to have solved anything (Although it was in Japanese, and thus difficult to discern what it had said).

Thus; I turn to the Fuwanovel community for advice once more.

I await your advice, oh great senpai.

Tuturuu~

(Note - what is the SdActi program for? It seems different from everything else, so I am curious.)

As long as you unchecked it once and applied it to all subfolders and files it should be ok. It's normal for the folder to be in the "mixed" state.

Do you have any codecs installed? Some codecs can cause trouble when a game is playing a video.

You could try moving the prologue01.ngs and prologue02.ngs files temporarily somewhere else from the dx folder and see if the game starts when it has to skip the videos in the beginning.

I'm not 100% sure but I think SdActi has something to do with the DRM of this game

Moving prologue1 and 2 does not solve the issue - the same problems as before are still there. I can play the opening after idling at the main menu just fine - so it shouldn't be anything with the videos...

Upon further investigation - it seems that SdActi was 'Blocked' under properties. After unblocking it however; nothing appears to have been changed.

EDIT: Additionally; further examination reveals the following files were blocked as well.

- qrtool.dll

- sdrt4280j

- sysds64.dll

- libvorbis.dll

- VerCheck.dll

- free

- libogg.dll

- libvorbisfile.dll

- SdActiRc.dll

Will attempt to start after unblocking these files.

ADDITIONAL EDIT: No changes to outcome. That said; there may be a difference with sdrt4280j once it had been unblocked - will attempt to run.

--------

The program ran differently; however upon finishing no changes were made to the game.

Will attempt to collect screenshots.

Additionally; there is a black box that appears between the last and second to last screenshots - however; it disappears too quickly for me to get a screenshot.

You haven't properly changed your system locale.

In control panel choose Region, then Administrative tab and click Change system locale, select Japanese from the drop-down list, apply and restart your PC.

If this is the case; then this is a strange error indeed, as I believe I have already changed the system locale. I am able to play Rewrite just fine; which requires a locale change as well.

Rewrite doesn't actually need Japanese locale to launch. But saving may not work without correct locale.

Edit: Ok even saving seems to work after launching Rewrite for a second time.

This appears to have been the case. It seems my method of using Rewrite to check the locale setting was flawed.

While a part of me wonders why Rewrite appears to be working while the locale is set to English; and my continuing curiosity as to the root of the SdActi program - the game appears to be working fine for now.

Could this be the choice of Steins;Gate!?

/joke

Thanks for your support though - I will return to the threads if another VN appears to have an issue.
