Stuff to grab before torrents go down

Okay, since people seem unsure how to procure stuff in a post-fuwatorrent future, here's a super brief and simple guide on how to find Japanese VN .ISOs. I will not be giving detailed install instructions. It will vary per game and I believe that part will be a site feature in the future.

1. Search for the game you want in VNDB.

2. Look for the "Original Title" field just under the game's name to find the Japanese spelling, copy it. If it does not have this, that means it was originally written in English, and you should copy that instead.

3. Paste that into [no linking or mentioning torrent sites]

4. In my example search, I'm searching for Majikoi, which is 真剣で私に恋しなさい. There are a ton of entries to the series so you'll get a lot of torrents, you want the one with the most seeds and no additions to the title.

5. ~tada~! [no linking or mentioning torrent sites] - You'll notice that these often come with extras. When you load the torrent you can safely deselect all of the non-game components

You will need disc image mounting software, I think daemon tools lite is the easiest to use. Most of the time installation is as simple as an english language game, if you're familiar with doing that it shouldn't be a problem. Do take care to 1) not run the autorun, there have been reports of some of these being infected with malware, and 2) do not install to program files or other write-protected directories. After that, carefully read the readme supplied in every english patch release for instructions on how to properly install the patch. 90% of the time it's as simple as copying files over to the install folder.

I mean yeah, this is all super basic. If you can't find what you want, search on www.anime-sharing.com instead. If you can't find what you want there, cry. Sometimes non-eroge VNs get uploaded to the main [no linking or mentioning torrent sites] site, not the [no linking or mentioning torrent sites] one, so search there, too. You'll have to be a little more resourceful, but it's really not all that hard. Generally speaking, once a patch comes out for a game, it is highly unlikely that it will actually be hard to find. Someone will make it available somewhere obvious.

Thanks for posting this, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to play new VNs anymore (I was sure there are other sites, but I didn't know/find them).

Symphonic Rain is supposed to be very good according to some here, but from the synopsis it just sounds more like a romance VN about music..? Is it really so good?

I think it's very overrated. The drama wasn't particularly compelling, the most interesting part was one of the unlockable routes but it doesn't save the VN. The game had almost no humor, so you have to be able to tolerate a very serious and dry story centered around romantic drama and music. And one that's not all that good, either. This appears to be an unpopular opinion.

Just wondering, this is probably the most stupid question in the history of stupid questions, but is downloading Vns that are unlicensed in your country and untranslated by a proper organisation (ie mangagamer or jast) illegal?

Pirating is usually more or less illegal. It's not something that is easy to enforce however. Licensing probably does not affect anything.

Are there any other mystery/twisty VNs (maybe with dark themes) that are worth getting?

I downloaded: Cross Channel. Utawarerumono. and Sekien no Inganock

Sharnoth is in the same series as Inganock.  Umineko is probably the best mystery VN out there.  I would definitely get that one as well if you're looking for Mystery/Twisty.  Killer Queen seems like it might be interesting in that department, though I haven't played it.

I've heard Muv-Luv gets absolutely insane once you get to Alternative, so you would do well to pick that up.  Just remember, you need Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative to get the full series.

Actually, with Umineko you need Umineko and Umineko Chiru as well.  Just pointing that out.  Get the Umitweak PS3 patch if you can, Fuwa has it both standard and prepatched.

1- Killer Queen starts off as interesting, but turns to underage loli porn in the later half.

2- Agreed on Umineko is a very good one, but I'd recommend the original sprites.

Thank you! :) Do you really need to play Hirugashi (sp?) - I have a demo - before Umineko?

I tried downloading Umineko Chiru but couldnt get it to work :(

Killer Queen has an interesting premise but was dull IMO sadly, and not as good as it could have been :(

No, you don't need to play Higurashi before Umineko.  If you can't get Chiru to work, please ask the people on the support forums.  :D

Has anyone tried out Phenomeno? It looks interesting but since my laptop has VERY limited memory, i don't know if it's worth the download. Thoughts?

I liked it, it's definitely supposed to be an advertisement for the light novels but it's still worth playing if you enjoy horror / mystery games.

Personally I'm really fond of the PS3 art. And the Chiru version for some reason was less buggy than the question arcs.

It should be noted that the Fuwa torrents of the graphically overhauled Umineko games were of an older version of said graphics patch. So if you're going with those versions, you'll still want to download and install the latest version of the patches.
