Vargas Posted January 27, 2015 Share Posted January 27, 2015 For about the last 4-5 years I have been using this Intel core I5 2.5Ghz Windows 7 x64 laptop pc. Plan on getting a Desktop pc this year prob around 1k-2k just wondering what specs everyone thinks I should focus on. I Will probably get one with atleast 2Tb, Windows 8 since it works better now, atleast 3.5ghz-4ghz, 16 Gig ram, and Intel core I7. Idk what other things I should worry about since this pc will be for web design and future uses with Visual Novels, playing music/movies, and anything else. I use Newegg for the place I will be buying all the pc parts and building my own although I don't know how well people that sell there own custom build ones work. Some have got my interest but still not sure if thats what I plan on doing. If you have a good built pc let me know what I should do about this. I have been searching around what to do but still haven't made a decision on building my own pc or just buying one that's already made for people. Also don't go for a processor strictly for the Ghz it has, since frequency isn't everything, IPC(instructions per cycle) is what matters. I digress though. cryofrzd Posted January 28, 2015 Share Posted January 28, 2015 If building your own pc is the choice then my advice is to put the extra money on what's harder to extend later. That is not a huge ssd disks or massive amounts of ram etc. Buy those things when the need comes around, it will be cheaper and better by then. Invest in a good base, a good motherboard, processor and graphics card. For measuring processors as said before clock frequency is far from everything, later models can often perform more on fewer cycles I can link to instruction benchmarks but those are gibberish for laymen. Don't buy the previous version just cause you get better specs for less money. Intel has a biased compiler that is quite used by the industry that generates more efficient software on their processors, which gives them an overhand in benchmarks and software even though the processors are equally good. If you can wait, Skylake and AMD's 300 series are launching this year too. In general, go for an H97/C226 platform + E3-1231/41/46 V3, 2x 8GB, 250GB SSD + 2x 2TB HDD, if not, go a step higher and get an X99 + i7-4820K/E5-2630 V3 + 2x 8GB DDR4. The first thing you have to decide on is exactly what you want to do. You mention VN's and design. Is that mean you won't be playing video games? If that is right then you can save decent money on the GPU. If you plan to play a lot of games go for at least GTX 770 or better, but if you plan only do a design, VN's, movies, etc... GTX 600 series will be enough. Also, if design you do includes a lot of rendering, etc... Definitely get RAM at least 32gb 1800MHz. The motherboard is very important!!! Personally, I recommend Asus. Sabertooth is one that will handle all, but if you are looking for a serious set up check some ROG from Asus. They are more expensive, but well worth the money. Make sure is same socket as the CPU of your choice. Intel i7 4770k is a super CPU that runs at 3.5GHz but you can also overclock it. (Only processors with "k" after number allow Overclocking) Note: Do not use a cooler that is supplied with the CPU. Get something decent like Corsair Hydro series H60 or H80i. Another important part is the PSU. Here definitely go for modular that will save you a lot of space and make your build nice and tidy. If you are looking for only one GPU 850Watts is more than enough, but if you want an SLI with two GPU's then you will need something like 1200Watts. HDD 2Tb is useless. Definitely go for configuration 240Gb SSD (HyperX 3k)+ 1TB HDD. Use SSD for your Windows, Photoshop, Cinema 4D, etc... and everything will be much faster. 1TB HDD use for Movies, games, pictures, etc... (I recommend WD Black. Is nice and fast) Windows: Do not get 8 or 8.1!!! Definitely go for Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and wait at least a year before you install Windows 10. The last part is Case. Make sure that Case is big enough to accommodate all your desired hardware and also look cool. Well, I think this is it. Especially the Part about the motherboards and PSU's are incredible. If someone want a colorful mb with a lot of functions (the most of us) will never use then buy some of these. For the most a "normal" mb is enough, if it has the interfaces you need (USB 3.0, SATA, stuff like that). To the PSU, for a single GPU 500W are more than enough. Modular is nice if you want to pay a little bit more. More important is the efficiency (80Plus, gold, silver, ... label).A good 500W PSU (eg beQuiet) is far way better than a cheap 1000W one. And if you want to install win 8.1 and you can accept the GUI, just do it. It isn't as bad as the people make it. It's just different and if you're flexible you can handle it. Kendjin Posted January 28, 2015 Share Posted January 28, 2015 i5 OC if you want a fast PC, i7 if you plan to do streaming as well. Consider getting a pre-OC bundle if you aren't up to overclocking. Since you are going for it. Get 16GB DDR3 or DDR4 (you'd need a mobo that supports it) SSD is cheap now, grab a nice 480GB, augment that with a large traditional HDD and you're covered. Personally prefer NVIDIA, GTX 980 is worth it if your budget covers it. Avoid the 970 due to NVIDIA coming out and stating it isn't as good as they claimed Consider a 4GB VRAM card, games are looking for 3+ to max out. Just some minor highlights to help.
