Excellent, my plan has succeeded!  :holo:

Looking forward to reading people's thoughts while watching.

Can't lie that's half the reason I chose Selector.

Also, Death Parade Episode 4, better but still not as good as the first two were.

Question though:

Do we know the results of the judgement or is it up for interpretation?

episode 1 and 2 thoughts

this is one of the few times that i wish we could get an exposition episode just so that we can understand what is going on. Other then that the anime is pretty great this might be the first time i finish with more than one day to spare before the deadline. also i enjoy the new world symphony that play once an episode or so.

We do know it. It's simple, you just have to look at the masks above the elevators in which the people are going. If's it's the white gentle-looking mask then it's reincarnation if it's the red devilish-looking mask then it's the void. In episode 4 for example, the guy goes for reincarnation while the woman is sent to the void.

I will most likely start Shinsekai Yori next week as I have exams this weekend.

Just rewatched episode 1 of Shin Sekai Yori. So gud.

I didn't remember the very first scene, haha. Kinda surprised me.

Anyway, this first episode is brilliant. It's pretty hard to find good horror anime, but Shin Sekai Yori manages to be one even without it being its primary objective. There's an extremely heavy atmosphere throughout that episode, because of the sense of eeriness, that something is wrong, that comes up all the time. This is one of the few anime that manage to give me chills.

The direction is extremely good, with interesting shots that really work well to drop hints at what's gonna happen later or that participate in evoking fear. There are also those scenes that display the supernatural through saturated colors, going as far as full black and white during Saki's ritual. Those scenes contrast with the usual pale colors of the rest which fits the eerie atmosphere.

I didn't remember that from my first watch but the character animation is also quite good in that first episode, with some finely detailed movements.

Plot-wise it's a fairly solid introduction, but we don't really know where it's headed yet.

edit: And how could I forget! The music really sets the mood too, it participates in reinforcing the scary feelings of some scenes. And THAT theme. THAT theme. I'm pretty sure the composer was inspired by Kenji Kawai's work on Ghost in the Shell for that one. It's really THE one song that stands out from the soundtrack and sticks.

Just as I remembered, it's excellent. The post-apocalyptic/supernatural setting is a nice change too, wouldn't have appreciated too much to have this happening in a standard school setting.

I actually think it's gonna be hard to watch through this show, I need to have the right mood for it...

I've only rewatched the first episode but I've already noticed a bunch of foreshadowing that I missed the last time I rewatched it.

I watch it for the first time... I expect a great everything explaining ending, because thats the only possible reason I can think of why that show is so high rated. Well, I'm only at EP 8 but till now I wouldn't say that this show is something outstanding. I'll just move on and watch more.

You seem to give this reaction to every show, i'm starting to get scared.

(As in, you gave this same reaction to something like WUG, when you put Shinsekai Yori  and WUG on the same level, it's kind of scary)

I actually feel like re-watching Shinsekai Yori now because it's just that good, thanks guys.

Finished watching Death Parade Ep.4. Here are my thoughts:

Another underwhelming episode like the previous week. It had the same problem as the previous episode: the stakes weren't high enough. The arcade game was pretty lackluster. No penalties means no consequences for winning or losing, apart from the final judgment. Having them lose on a technicality because of what Dequim did was kind of lame, but I understand why he did what he did.

His methods are crude and I can only hope that he changes by the end of the show. We do get a glimpse at the end of the episode where he seems to be reconsidering

using that object, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I figure Dequim will learn that it isn't necessary to use brute force to tug out a person's inner darkness if he relies solely on a person's free will to keep the momentum going.

I want the show to bring back that oppressive atmosphere that the first two episodes had. The tension was palpable and bringing in penalties made the game seem so much more visceral.

We'll be seeing more of the characters next week. I hope they manage to flesh out the characters properly and explain how they all managed to become arbiters.

God damn Ezee. You are not supposed to sit 9 hours in a go and watch anime. :D

I'm currently sick and lying the whole day on the couch, so there is nothing better than just watch anime ;) ...

So and here my Review:

Story: 6 / 10

Someone of the writers thought a lot about it, I would say. The plot itself is something you see not that often but it’s also nothing that made me say “Wow, how they could create this!? It’s awesome”. This kind of story I’ve seen a lot (maybe not in anime) so I can’t say they did something spectacular.

Also the first two parts feel relatively pointless for the effort they put in. I think they could have put that whole show in 13 Episodes and it would be much more enjoyable.

Characters: 7 / 10

I’ve no „special“ feelings towards any of the characters. Maybe that makes it good and I will rate it as that. I really don’t know what to say to that because none of them left an impression at me.

Art: 6 / 10

I admit that it is well made, but I don’t like that drawing style that much. It’s just a personal thing. Also I had problems to identify the different characters at first. And the way they use the colors fits also not my taste.

Sound: 7 / 10

The BGM in the anime was pretty fitting and nice. But the sound and the mood of the ED song was a bit off for me. That’s all I’ve to say about that.

Enjoyment: 5 / 10

There were some scenes in the first two parts that I enjoyed but in general the first two parts I just watched to move on. If I had to watch it weekly I had for sure dropped it after the first 2 episodes (and I would not regret it). From episode 19 on it were pretty interesting until they went to Tokyo. I hoped of a great finale but I was disappointed after that. They were not able to surprise me. That’s a shame, they could have made more out of it.

Overall: 6 / 10

I tried to stay as objective like I could and that’s what came out of it. I think that’s pretty fair for me ;)

(I hope nobody feel offended by the following part) I can understand that the target group enjoy that pseudo-philosophical and pseudo-social critical stuff but that didn't work out for me. I think I’m just too grown up and seen enough of that. And also that isn't an extraordinary work for this genre. They couldn't surprise me at the end and my expectations for that was also a lot higher.

I'm only on Ep. 2 and I had the exact same thoughts so if you still had that by Ep. 8 then damn it looks like I'll be in for a looong ride  <_<

~~

Maybe I got overhyped by Down's Episode 1 *rewatch* comments about it being 'brilliant' and whatnot. I was more lost on what the hell was going on so I really couldn't appreciate all of the finer details he outlined xD

Lore is interesting, characters are likeable.

Random amateur theorizing so all the veteran rewatchers can laugh at me

The 'monster rats' are the people who 'disappear'

Don't get too hyped because of me. I love that show, I think it's one of the best anime that came out in those last few years. But I also know that it might not be the kind of stuff people on fuwa watch/appreciate usually.

I don't think there's a real "it's gonna get better" argument to pull here either. SSY is a fairly irregular series in terms of quality but it varies from episode to episode, not from beginning to end.

So what do you love about it then to consider it one of the best anime? Production values? Character development? "Pseudo-philosophical and pseudo-social critical stuff + 'surprise' ending that couldn't really surprise?" (Ezee) :P

I think it's quite simply extremely well written and directed. It's an emotionally compelling show both because of what happens in the story and how the characters are developed but also because of the atmosphere it creates through its direction. It's also a fairly good and interesting science-fiction plot, and contrary to Ezee I don't think it's "pseudo-philosophical" or "pseudo-social critical". I wouldn't say it's a "deep" show but it does bring up lots of interesting concepts and considerations in my opinion.

That's just to try to vaguely express how I feel about this anime, I'll try to be more detailed once I'll have rewatched it.

Episode 3 of Shinsekai Yori

An episode dedicated to just the characters bonding out in the wilderness for their summer camp was all I needed to finally warm up to this show~

Atmosphere. This show really does excel in it. Episode 3 was meant to be lighthearted so it was littered with naturey sounds and pleasant music as the crew canoe down the rivers and gather around the crackling campfires at nightfall with crickets chirping in the background. Very pleasant.

~~~
And it looks like we got some romance going on  :D
Saki x Shun???
Shun is such a romantic :P using his powers to still the waters so it could perfectly reflect the night sky. T'was a beautiful scene
N8b14Gq.jpg
IqGnaZM.jpg
Episode 4
Info-dumpy for the first half, but it was good, necessary information that allowed me to immerse myself in this world and appreciate its lore. The various flashbacks we saw in previous episodes about the world history & psychokinesis (PK) users are explained by the colorful magic horse[library]
Timeline
  • The existence of people with Psychokinesis powers was discovered in 2011
  • 0.3% of the world population wielded this power
  • In Japan 'Boy A' from Episode 1's flashback misused his powers to assault 19 women, 17 of which he kills. -> This establishes why future societies 'program' new PK users to have the 'no kill other human' instinct; "Death of Shame"
  • More PK users misuse their powers to commit crimes, terrorists acts leads to global conflict & warfare that lasts five centuries (Dark Ages)
  • Northeastern Asia had 4 distinct societies during this time. 1. Slave Dynasty (PK) 2. Hunter-gatherers (non-PK) 3. Bandits (PK) 4. Pre-PK Techno
  • Out of the 19 Slave Dynasties, 1 of them, the Holy Cherry Blossom Dynasty, is revealed to be the one we saw via flashbacks with that one emperor who made his subjects clap for three days straight. The Dark Ages ends after the last of the Slave Dynasties collapses due to civil unrest & war over the emperor(s)' tyranny. World population is reduced to 2%.
  • No documentation between the end of the Dark Ages and the current present -> Our main cast of characters are left in the dark as to their origins/ancestry
  • Safe to assume that the surviving civilizations reformed the upbringing & nurturing of new PK users to prevent future misuse of powers/killing people -> Hey look, that's what Episodes 1 & 2 were all about; the pyschological rituals and education that Saki & her friends had to go through :D
  • PK users deemed too irresponsible/unworthy/dangerous are eliminated -> Explains why not everybody graduates from the Elementary school/the missing people
There was confusing shit at the end about 'Ogres' aka patients with Larman-Krogeus Syndrome who existed pre-PK and 'Karmic Demons' aka patients with Hashimoto-Applebaum Syndrome & something about the current society being made to prevent the creation of ogres and demons, but the horse gets ganked by random-monk-from-Temple-of-Purification-passerby, Rijin who claims the horse was a demon who told lies.
Btw, LOL at my amateur theorizing back in Episode 2
The way that episode had students going missing and then introducing monster rats at the end I was like "Okay maybe the students that went missing get turned into monster rats."
Nope. Monster rats are just monster rats. The people that went missing were likely executed for being unworthy of their PK powers
~~~
Anyway, Rijin criticizes the crew for not obtaining permission to venture this far out, but apparently the even worse crime they committed was 'listening to the words of a horse demon" which breaks one of the Ten Platinum Laws of their Ethics Rules and so he seals their powers (I'm interested into the mechanics of that) and then prepares to escort them to the Ethics Committee for their punishment.

Unfortunately, the crew gets ganked by Monster Rats along the way, and surprise surprise, Balloon Dogs do exist & Rijin dies protecting the crew from the explosion.

DY4zWAR.jpg

Episode 5 - 7

Not much to say except. This arc was a good 'introductory' arc that gives us an idea of what shenanigans the characters may end up in in the future.

Random misc. comments

Monster Rats are friggen' ugly. Can't wait to see what other grotesque creatures this show can churn out ;)

ra9qyyL.jpg

Dw guys, it's totaly SFW. Just think of cow udders!

That random sexual moment b/w Saki & Satoru when they were captured though. Cheating on Shun already, Saki? xD

Dw dw, nothing happens, and Saki actually has a momentary flashback about Shun later on so.. SakixShun confirmed??

SoeV3ve.jpg

1Rdu07S.jpg

Again, I'm interested in how their abilities are sealed and unsealed. Saki was able to unseal Satoru's powers via hypnosis + remembering his mantra or so and that was pretty interesting.

Regarding PK powers in general, wow. Satoru completely rekt the Monster Rats while he still had mana stamina. Really shows how devastating the war in the Dark Ages must've been since PK users had free reign to use their powers against each other.

I also wish to see Saki kick some ass one day. Sucks her powers remained sealed for the remainder of this arc.

~~~
Regarding Squera, not sure how I feel about the rat. It seems he only assisted Saki x Satoru because of mutual benefits rather than him being a legit friend. Especially during that scene where he was 'captured' by enemy Monster Rats where the anime totally portrayed him to be a double agent so I was confused when he was still helping them, especially at the end when they are running from the Giant Hornets. But everything works out in the end~
Like the show couldn't make up its mind on whether he would backstab them or not xD but ultimately he doesn't
zVl0apE.jpg
ooCMJ29.jpg
~~~
That ending though.

"Yay everybody reunites and the Giant Hornets let us go despite being ordered to take us in (thanks to Satoru saving the general earlier I presume).

We'll go back home, unseal our powers, and since Rijin died, there's no way anybody will have known we were in trouble for breaking the Ethics Rule via talking to that magic horse!"

NOPE! Looks like shit is gonna go down in very soon. I'll be looking forward to it :D~

A lot of these were exactly my thoughts while watching for the first time. :P

Also not sure what your subs say, but his name isn't anything as weird as "Squeara", it's just "Squealer".

So what do you love about it then to consider it one of the best anime? Production values? Character development? "Pseudo-philosophical and pseudo-social critical stuff + 'surprise' ending that couldn't really surprise?" (Ezee)  :P

Other rewatchers feel free to respond as well~

The main reason is definitely the characters, their interactions, motivations, and development all make them very relatable. The production values are really nice especially considering it didn't have that large of a budget. And I don't think it's "pseudo-socially critical", but actually socially critical. Of course it's not something that has never been done before, but what is?

GG HorribleSubs. Not that I know anything about translating but they probably used a literal romanization of how Japanese people would say Squealer to come up with Squeara then xD

btw Saki is so pretty  :wub:

Like S;G's Kurisu being close to Chris or NGNL's Chlammy being Kurami.

If you have the time and bandwidth you can try getting UTW subs, they're the ones I have and they're pretty good.
