H-Scenes. Really necessary?

Oh well. Seems like everyone shares the same opinion. I wonder if the japanese folks think likewise as well ?

I must agree. It depends. Most of the time they are not really nescesary, but unless they put a stop on the flow of

the story, meaning they were forcing their way in (pun not intended) they are ok i guess.

In most galge they stablish some kind of turning point in the relationship, so i think that they are ok.

Mmm... i felt like they were absolutely not called for in Kanon. And there were way too many in Wanko to Kurasou... its like

the main character couldnt walk two steps without having to fuck something just for kicks. -_- Then again you will not see me complaining about it. I felt oddly conflicted though... the characters were so loli... and while the game was quite adamant regarding the fact that the animals needed the release, still it felt like i was taking advantage of them. Weird.

I still remember when i played through Three sisters's story... in that game it was really fun to "collect" all the h-scenes. It was quite well done in that respect.

Meh, they can be pretty annoying. It's a bit awkward for me personally since I am 16 and live with my parents with no privacy.

Anyways, from what I've seen, some VNs use them meaningfully (Katawa Shoujo perhaps) while others feel completely obligatory and out of place (Fate/Stay Night). The latter can really ruin the characterization of some great characters sometimes. For example, in FS/N, Rin is portrayed as a strong, independant and knowledgeable girl, but all of that is completely wiped away when

she tries to get Shirou and Saber to have sex to "restore Saber's magical power" by trying to turn them on. It's completely out of place and really left me thinking "WTF." It's weird, decharacterizing and honestly just pointless.

I already said that I don't think that H-scenes are necessary but now I thought of a way to explain it better by comparing VNs with other media suck as anime or action movies. First think of action movies there are a lot of porn movies but that is all they are porn they don't have stories, plots etc.. and then there are normal movies that don't have porn scenes in them. So piple who want porn can go and watch porn and people who want a normal movie with plot, the story can watch any normal Hollywood movie. There are both porn movies and story movies but they are newer mixed in one, I mean just think if any normal popular Hollywood movie would suddenly had porn scenes in it, it would be a desatrer. There are indeed some movies that have nudity in them and there is a lot of moves that shows main characters had sex but they don't show you "ewryting" they just show you enough for you to get the point that they had sex they don't show you porn scenes of them. Anime is more similar to VNs than action movies but they are the same, they have hentai and normal anime but newer mixed in one. Everything else that I said about action movies applies to anime too, if any non-hentai popular anime had hentai scenes in it it would be a disaster, there is some ecchi anime that have nudity and there is some anime where protagonist have sex with herione but they don't have the actual porn/hentai scenes in them just show you enough to get a point. But when it comes to VNs there are nukige and all-agesVN (when I say all-ages I mean on all VNs widouth H-scenes not just actuall all-ages ones) but there is also mix of two eroges. So same as in other mediums those who want porn can go and read nukige those who want story can go and read all-ages VN but the difference then in other mediums is that there is also eroges that have both good story, plot and porn in them. So my point in comparing action movies, anime and VNs is that saying that H-scenes are necessary is the same as if you said that Hollywood movies like harry potter, lord of the rings etc. should have porn scenes in them or that animes like Naruto, Bleach, Shingeki no kyojin, SAO, should have them too. And this doesn't apply to only animes and the action moves but every single other media as VNs are pretty match the only media that have porn and normal stories mixed in one.

Well for me, I hardly find H-scenes interesting and it have really little to do with enhancing the feelings to the plot so most of the time I just press quickly so I can move on to the story. That being said, I do own games that is both an eroge and have an all age version(example: Kud Wafter). Since I read VNs for their stories the H-scenes matters little unless we're talking about a dark setting VN like the one I recently bought: Amane Switch. In which case I pay slightly more attention so I can keep track and why and how did somethings happen etc...

So unless if it's related to the plot, I'll usually ignore H-scenes. Well, another point I will skip it slower if I love the bgm during the scene. Some companies like to put soothing/nice bgm during and only at the H-scenes ._.

I'm a little torn on this one. While some games definitely seem to include H-scenes almost as an afterthought, others make it very apparent that sex is a natural part of the characters' relationship.

I find that games tending towards the latter often include scenes of that nature more often in the game, or at least not right at the end as if they were some kind of "reward." The characters' physical relationship is explicitly portrayed as a part of their story.

But then there are games like Koihime Musou. Frankly, I think the H-scenes in that game are great. It's a harem game, tried and true, but dammit if I don't think you learn a metric butt-ton (ha-ha) about the characters during those scenes.

Or maybe I'm just a hopeless sap.

I skip through them most of the time. I believe the only one I ever read from start to finish was Sumika's scene from ML Extra because... I dunno, it wasn't really about the porn, but rather the characters' feelings. (how she was frustrated by not being seen as a woman by Takeru, and how that finally changed, etc. if you've played it you know all this)

Also, the issue kinda reminded me of this video: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/8300-Sexual-Failing

Nukige ar at least honest about the whole deal, while in games like FSN, already mentioned above, sometimes it's just there to let the player see some naked chicks while pretending to be totally plot-relevant.

Like I said in my post above even when H-scenes are part of a story (plot-relevant) they still could do it like any other medium does it, show you that scene from an angle that you can figure out that they are having sex without showing you everything. But I guess that not many people like to read long posts :) .

Let him! who without sin! cast the first stone in games with h-scene!

I doubt about the replies here. A fair amount probably played already Sisters 夏の最後の日 only because the h-scenes

This can include no more than:

School Days (A lot of people were curious about Sekai+kotonoha ending)

Viper Series (Classic)

Any Alice Soft title

and well, i agree with you madoka12345. I watch the h-scene as long as i like the character though.

And you're not the  only one threepwood007, koihime musou h-scenes are too hot to be skiped haha

I can live without H-scenes, they're nice to look at but totally destroy the story most of the time. Looking at you FS/N-.-

But I can understand that peolpe see them as "reward" or the player is just

a horny bastard who doesn't want to stop reading but still wants his "fix".  <_<

For me it's story first. H is just optional.

Well it depends.

I feel H-scene can be necessary to emphasis the emotions between both of the characters.

For example I think H-scenes in G senjou no maou weren't useless and even necessary to understand clearly the way they felt (Would it be real love scene or disturbing ones)

But sometime in other games it feels that Hentai was put here just to satisfy and adult public that just wanted to.

For example fate stay night

This game would have been so good if not for the H-scenes !

Replenish magical energy ... REALLY ? (That was my reaction)

The H scenes only make some kind of sense in Sakura's route (Heaven's feels)

I think it's tricky to have some but if it's the case you have to make them have a point, else it'll be there just for the sake of it.

I usually play 2 games at the same times, one with H one without depending one the mood. Sometime i just don't feel like it.

It depends.

I think most of the H-scenes are useless and I skipped them. But sometimes, it's very important. For example, I don't think we can skip the first H scene in Naoko route (Kono Aozora No Yakusokuo). It describe the relationship between Hosino and Naoko and told us the story.

But anyway, most of the H-scenes are useless... In my opinion.

For those interested in a good, solid game without any H scenes, Baseson's recently released Sengoku Koihime is all ages.

Then again, a friend who played it said it's pretty damn obvious it's meant to have H scenes rather than not, so expect an 18+ version of it sooner or later.

Ok, I haven't read all of this thread, but the topic did catch my attention. I have never liked the H-scenes in VNs. I'm not a prud or anything...in fact, I started playing VNs for the H scenes because masturbating to them felt more satisfying because there is an emotional connection to the characters that isn't there with other forms of pornography. Even then, I didn't like sex scenes because they felt so out of place. Every character I have encountered is completely different during sex, and it's very unsettling for me.

Add to that, they aren't even necessary for a good VN. I just finished Wanko to Kuraso and the end of Risa's route, which has no erotic content, is far more satisfying than any or all of the H scenes.

It may be a pipe dream, but I wonder if a group would be able to produce patches that would cut these scenes out without losing any of the story. They really do leave that bad of an impression on me.

Are all Fuwanovel VN's censored ??   If they are,  then why do they even leave them in???

It's not Fuwanovel that is censoring VNs it is Japan, and am starting to think that you might be troling us as you already gotten an answer to your question.

Wow! this is an extremely difficult topic to step into especially with all the convincing reasons for whether H-scenes are important or not. On my part I generally enjoy them (only wen they are well done), though this depends heavily on whether they really affect the story or not (this is majorly on plot heavy VNs). Yume Miru Kusuri ( A Drug that makes you Dream, forgive me if I made any mistakes) is an example of a VN I personally think actually needed it's h-scenes,

Firstly, the kaichou/ student council president (my favourite heroine, sorry forgot their names since I played it a while back) was a girl that wanted release from all the obligations she had (she also came from a prestigious family, so I'm sure you understand) and was trying out anything (drugs, alcohol e.t.c) she considered fun and that could help her forget all her obligations (she was lazy). Sex with the main character ended up becoming one of these things, this route showed an example of what happens to teens when they get into things they are not ready for or things they should not do and the character development from tehm being  horny teens to people that actually cared about each other was simply marvelous (avoiding spoilers so I won't say much).

The second heroine (bully victim), wanted to find something that could help her escape the pain of being bullied, she was a timid girl ( HOW COULD SOMEBODY BULLY SUCH A HARMLESS CREATURE!), and the outlet was making love with main character which led to the main character developing actual feelings for her which led to an awesome grand finale when they had stand up to the bullies. Probably the most touching story in the game (kaichou still my favourite though)

The last heroine (drug addict) was so high on drugs she developed the delusion of thinking that sex would help her locate the "fairy kingdom" (play it to fully understand this), and our main character was always dragged at her pace, well one thing led to another. In the end they develop feelings for each during their crazy adventures whereby the main character had to save her from the drugs she was using.

The main character and the heroines in their respective routes weren't in proper boyfriend girlfriend relations(throughout most the VN even after sex) but through the progression of the Novel it turns into something truly special and worthwhile, where honest feelings of love develop between the MC and Heroine. This VN just shows some of the things teens have to deal with (substance abuse, bulling, identity crisis etc) when they are growing up and learning more about the world. All in all the sex in this VN played a substantial roll in the development of their relationships.

So Yes H-scenes are required in VNs but only when they are done right like in this VN, cause in some VNs they are either boring or misplaced. A lot of VNs with or without the H-scenes are great (Little Busters, fate/stay night etc.).

These are my thoughts (if your gonna reply please be gentle), and if you haven"t played this VN (Yume Miru Kusuri) GET IT, I insist.

Alot of people are claiming similar things about H-scenes being necessary in some of VNs because they are actually part of the story but I think that is only partly true. Yes, it is true that some VNs like Yume Miru Kusuri need to show you that heroines are having sex with a protagonist as it is part of a story, whoever that still isn't an excuse for having H-scenes because it's not like H-scenes are the only way of showing you this.  They could just show you that 2 people are having sex in various different ways without actually giving you porn scene like for example showing you a scene from angles where you don't get to see evry part of it, or they could make them really short, so they just show you really short faw lines scene of them doing it and then jumping to a moment when they finished (or both). There really is no need to show you evry second of them doing it from fothplay to climax as if you wouldn't get a point otherwise.
