Your first VN experience

My first was the GBA Love Hina one. This was before I even knew anything about anime or manga at all, much less visual novels, and I don't really remember anything other than the timed choices, so I don't really consider it my first.

Years later, I tried Yume Miru Kusuri out after seeing a thread on /v/ about it. I loved it, but it really was Fate/stay night that cemented my love for visual novels forever. Still, I hold YMK in a special place in my memories, and I'd like to reread it someday.

Like so, so many others, my first VN experience was Katawa Shoujo, but it wasn't the actual Katawa Shoujo, it was the Act 1 Demo/Trial Version, I was reading it, and those feels were already starting to well up, then just as I finished Act 1/Chapter 1, it was all like 'Thanks for playing, hope you play again when we finish', and I 'almost' swore off Visual Novels right there, but then eventually got the entire thing, and loved....loved.....loved Katawa Shoujo, to this day, it's still my most favorite VN, although that may just be because it was the first (you know, sometimes you never get over the first?) Rin's route was my favorite, followed by Hanako's. The feels from that VN were just....amazing, I almost wish that I had one of those MIB mind erasers, so that I could erase all my memories of Katawa Shoujo, just so that I could re-play it again and it be fresh.

Now that I remember clearly, the first one I played was clannad. I had just finished watching the anime for clannad, and was amazed by how good the writing was. Then I don't remember how or where, but I remember someone posting something about a clannad open voice thingamabobber ( didn't know what VN's were at the time. I thought they were mangas, and I don't like mangas). So I torrented clannad. Found out about what VNs were, and then I DLed G-sen. My fate was more or less sealed at that point.

My first VN was a terrible nukige called Love Potion. I went through a few more of these until I happened upon better games like True Love and Season of the Sakura.

VNs for me have always been about "story with ero"--something that doesn't otherwise exist in the US. I consume them much like mainstreamers around me consume Danielle Steele novels. The ero draws me in, and the story keeps me playing. For someone who'd always appreciated games with romance options (e.g., Baldur's Gate 2, Star Ocean 2), VNs were a natural progression. That said, with so many more choices I don't typically play nukige these days.

Mine is probably one of the old JAST releases, most likely True Love or Season of Sakura, which I both quite enjoyed at the time. I also played Thousand Arms on PS1, but it's mostly RPG with some dating sim parts.

I wasn't really into VNs for a few years after that, viewing them mostly as porn games, but I did try few over that time, such as Sengoku Rance which had gameplay elements that appealed to me.(a bit too rapey for my tastes though) I rediscovered the joy of VNs through Corpse Party, though I had been looking for a decent dating sim from time to time, with little success. It was only with Katawa Shoujo and afterwards Clannad that I really got back into VNs and haven't stopped since then.

My first VN was Narcissu. Only read it a bit at a time at first. As I got near the end, though, I was hooked. The writing moved me so much and taught me a few things about storytelling. It also had one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. To this day, it's still my absolute favorite of any VN.

My first VN was Shuffle!. I played it because I loved the anime (to this day, it's still one of my favorites) and was upset by Rin's choice of girlfriend. Thus, I played the game to get the Kaede end. I ended up immensely enjoying the game, and going on to play the other routes, and eventually, other VNs.

Always loved anime and Japan and its culture since young, when I found out about Visual Novel's I decided to give it a go, my first one was a free VN called "Memo" later on "Narcissu", "Little Busters" and "Katawa Shoujo" enjoyed it a lot and decided to keep on going, now that I have an android phone I play some VN's on it as well but sadly most of them are very short :(/>

I mostly play normal VN's that are set in High School, somehow this is my setting, not big fan of SCI-FI :)/>

Reason mostly why I play VN is to learn more and more about the Japanese culture.

My first VN would be Katawa Shoujo. I was surfin' The Pirate Bay for games, then interestingly, KS showed up. (Since it's usually English games that pop up) So, I tried it. Then, after playing completely finishing KS, I went to play other VNs as well. :)

My first VN is Saya no Uta, I played it 2 year ago(when I'm 13 (or 14) years old, but i'm have good awareness, I don't care what rating it was). And I have learned something after play this type of game. "sometime, I have a choice in my life, think about it, chose and it will lead me to the end, it can bad, or good, but it's my choice, no time to regret, I can't change it(not like game, I'm not have save point in real world =) ), everything I can do is follow it, and chose the next choice, after think about it alot"

btw, i play it as the first because, though i already know about vn after a longtime start to watching anime, i never play it before, I want have a exp, i pick the first in the list vn that translated to my language, because my english really bad, you can see. what a lucky, i picked a game have good scenario(with me) (and who want translate the boring game ;) )

Not sure if there's a topic about this or if this is the right place to put it (my stomach says yes) but here I go.

I've been hearing "Katawa Shoujo was my first VN" a lot these days, so that made me do this topic, simply post things like: Which was your first VN?, what you thought about it?, how you got into VN's?, and many more stuff like that, simply put, how was your first experience and how you got into it.

Oh, and inb4, i'm not criticizing KS, already read it, all the routes and it's good, i like it and my fav girl is Shizune BTW, also inb4 for people calling me weird....

my first VN was Fate Stay Night, followed by Tsukihime right in the next day. And I watched both of them on youtube (I deeply regret doing such a thing- It really screwed up my playing experience when I decided to play them). It was awesome! I never really cared about graphics, and seeing how the story was so much better than in the animes (whoops, my bad, Tsukihime doesn't have an anime.) I decided to play VNs from animes I already watched. Such as Clannad, for example. After that it just became natural to play VNs since the ones I played had been so awesome.
