Sekai Project Official Grisaia Translation?

Again, I'd like to repeat, now with a link, Go Go Nippon sold 10,000 freaking copies! On Steam! That shitty game. Granted, a lot of factors went into that which may not apply to Grisaia, such as its popularity amongst some mainstream youtube LPers as a weird title to mock, but still. There are niche audiences whom you don't expect to shop on Steam, and there are people there who just want something different from the norm.

As for the cut thing, yes, Steam takes a cut. Every retailer takes a cut (GOG, Desura, etc), because that's how they actually make money. Steam's cut is actually less than stores like Best Buy and Gamestop. Even if Sekai Project sells it on MangaGamer, MangaGamer will take a cut.  There are no "specialists" who won't. They would barely sell any copies if they limited it exclusively to their own site, so that's a terrible option.

Don't know to much about the VN market so thank you for enlightening me to some extent. Now my only issue is altering the original game. Will still probably buy it though don't know about playing since I am playing through Grisaia now. Will wait and see how much they change the game.

Quote from the comments there:

"It's probably worth pointing out that if it has a H-version then Steam wont allow it regardless. That's why Aselia was never allowed on Steam ( even though the 18+ version is only in Japan, the fact that it exists = automatic no )"

"It's never been outright confirmed in interviews but if you ask them over twitter ( DM normally ) they generally don't keep it hidden.

It was apparently submitted twice, the first time they didn't hear back. The second time they were told it was because a H version exists."

What about Grisaia then?

It has only been said that a steam release of Grisaia is "possible" but they haven't fully confirmed it. Thing is, that policy might have been from the old pre-greenlight days when there were no concrete guidelines about what could be on Steam and Valve individually reviewed every single applicant and passed judgement themselves. Nowadays the process is completely different so that may no longer apply. I could easily see the Valve of old saying no on that basis but they're no longer the ones who decide what goes on Steam anymore.  I imagine if JAST went through Greenlight with Aselia, they wouldn't be denied again, since it doesn't break their current set of rules.

MangaGamer has talked about doing an all-ages version of Kira Kira on Steam as if that's possible.

I have heard that once you get one game on Steam, the door is pretty much open to you. That is why I had assumed that these new titles will go on Steam for sure. Now that you guys mention it, I guess there does have to be some discussions. As long as it is an all ages version, I would have imagined Valve would be okay with that. We will see, though :).

Go Go Nippon was one of the first vn's that made it to Steam, and when that happened it was already quite well known due to the discussions all around the net. Regardless of that, it's a game with educational merits as well; it sold so many copies only because of that. None of the current vn's going to Steam won't sell as well, ever, unless it's some sort of a blockbuster title, made by a famous studio like TypeMoon or Key, for example.

Being on Steam always increases sales by a bit in most cases, but it is not a given. A lot of potential whether the game sales well, or not depends on the publishers and devs themselves; if they won't work towards it, try to spread news, use social networks and feeds like Twitter/FB and encourage people to get interested, Steam itself plays a minor role in increasing sales. The only plus from Steam is that it allows players to have all their games in one place and eases the management of such collections. Having a huge database of titles available at hand is the biggest merit, in that case. Steam's popularity rised from the fact it does everything for gamers, and modern gamers are simply lazy as fuck.

Why not? More interest in the medium is a good thing..Kind of sounds like you are being a hipster that way.

I can ensure you, that Grisaia will be off the frontpage in a matter of few hours at most; a lot of newly distributed games, unless already popular, fall from the frontpage in less than an hour. Placing visual novels on Steam won't make them any less niche they already are; in worst case, it will only increase the backlash they receive from the rest of the western gaming community, which treats them as some kind of a japanese joke.

Everyone propably got me wrong I'm trying to defend the original PC version's h-content, while all they are doing is basically making a western release out of the content from the Vita version. Is it good? Of course it is; the real problem lies in the fact, we're still not getting original ports to the west and both publishers and japanese devs do everything to avoid publishing original, 18+ versions of their games that were meant for the PC platform; currently using Steam as a cover.

Considering you haven't even read the original SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH your opinion is invalid. Not to mention inaccurate, Go Go Nippon Sold 10k copies from being on the front page for a VN thats considerable, And got featured on all sorts of Lets plays and all sorts of good stuf. So this is a good thing in the end.

But Grisaia is a blockbuster title. Just a bit behind the ones you mentioned.

people are making a big deal out of no h-scenes lol,it doesnt really matter as long as it spreads the VN culture to other parts of the world!

Spreading VN's is what we want, but I still like my h-scenes. Now I am not talking about h-scenes to get "happy" if I wanted that I would play VN's focused on that. I am talking about VN's where the h-scene is emotional and furthers the character development, it has a point. But I suppose through the spreading of the censored VN the fans of it will want the full experience and go find the non censored version.

No, you're pretty much right. It's just that things used to be different. Starting in mid-2012, they adopted a new system called Greenlight where basically the community approves games, and once approved a publisher can continue putting whatever they want on Steam with very little oversight. In the next couple years, Steam is going to get even more open with even community approval being unnecessary, but that's still a ways off. Prior to 2012, publishers had to go through Valve themselves and they reviewed every applicant individually and arbitrarily passed judgement not based on a set of criteria, but... gut feeling? I imagine it was almost impossible to get any VN on Steam in that period. Anyways, Sekai Project already got World End Economica approved through greenlight so they're now able to release whatever they want whenever they want with practically no additional approval.

Them not 100% committing to Grisaia being on Steam may be for a different reason. Just to make a wild guess, there has never been a VN like Grisaia on Steam before and they may be afraid of how the community might react to it. They don't want to do anything that might tarnish their reputation so maybe they're holding back, for now (note: I am not saying that would definitely happen)? I don't really know what other reasons they could have.

Thanks for that update :). I have been struggling to get some of my works greenlit so I am in the trenches. Yes, I can understand that fear of people's reactions. I have seen plenty of visual novels on Greenlight with people saying get that weaboo trash away from Steam, etc :(.

Anyway, wherever this new game rocks up, I will do my best to support it :).

Was my main concern when I thought about putting it on steam... and ditto will support it anyways.

<@herkz> i wish we could release an 18+ version and still make enough money to pay for the games

<@herkz> i just dont see how that's possible

Is also a big part of it. This version let's you get it across to more channels than an 18+ version would, which would probably lead to more sales outside of the core VN fanbase. Look at Steins: It sold out its entire LE in record time (so 6k at least). Mind you, a lot of this has to do with the fact that it is indeed steins;gate, which had an immensely popular anime, but it had a way better translation and because of the lack of ero content it got a lot more coverage/reviews because of it, from a lot of outlets.

Also, remember, this version was never ever meant for the PC, it's the vita version being ported over. This version is far from a downgrade, infact it's honestly probably better considering Angelic Howl got an asston of new cg's which it desperately needed. It's been near a year since I played it, so I'll probably give it a reread because I really liked the Fujisaki parts, but that's neither here nor there.

Sure, we can go on a tyrade about why the west is so up its ass about ero and whatever, sure, and that's another big discussion, but this is the reality. Theres a good chance we'll get the sequels faster this way. Honestly I don't think an 18+ version of the original would sell. Nobody would pay much money just for a bit of a polished translation for the same game of an 18+ game, especially not the massively pirate infested core fanbase of eroge. Maybe I just don't have much faith.

So is this the future of western localization for visual novels, to censor more and more of them? I hope not. I also would prefer to have translations with the original content intact. I will NOT be supporting Sekai/Front Wing because of the fact they decided to not use the original PC version when localizing a PC GAME for the western audience.

I wonder what impact, if any, this could have on the fan translations for the sequels.

will since it will get more popular you would think that a fan translation will be done soon enough but the thing is koestl is translating a game for mangagamer so he won't be free for quite sometime all we could do is hope for it to get translated in the future

Hijacking fan TL's starts to become a lucrative business for the current monopoly of our western publishers. And what can those poor fan translators do, when all they'd like to see is that their beloved game actually gets officially released.

In the end, they can own the license, they can C&D anything they want. In such situations it could as well be treated as a form of blackmail. And none will ever hear the translator was literally forced to hand over his work for free, otherwise the fruits of his own labor would turn bitter on him.

Have you lost your mind? What are you basing this post on? Is this anything other than wild speculation?

I wish people who are screaming at invisible censorship would just come out and admit that they like porn, because it's clearly not about moral implications of censoring art. The sex scenes are only in the game to increase sales 90% of the time anyways. God forbid if you use a version that never had sex to begin with, thats immoral.

EDIT: Ahh, fuck it. I wont put Koestl into it. Thats silly of me.

Try and point out some logic and tinfoil hats start getting strapped onto people. Its amazing.

Dear fucking god I hate the english fanbase sometimes. I feel bad for koestl and dovac who have to deal with answering all this crap on reddit/twitter.

to add: I'm not really pointing at anyone specifically in this thread, but it's just insane the crap I'm seeing everywhere on every message board.

Look, If I liked just porn, I would just read nukigies. I enjoy story based visual novels, but when I see TL groups leave out original content, it takes away from that story. The way I see it, if you don't like H content(as in hate it), maybe you should not be part of the fan base in the first place as more than half the visual novels out there have it. I am sick of moralists or whatever ruining these great pieces of art for the rest of the community by causing the censorship of them. I personally would rather wait or not see it localized at all if they are all going to be censored which takes away from the original work as it is in Japan.
