Sekai Project Official Grisaia Translation?

I'm probably getting the all age version because while there are some stuff censored (other than h-scenes which I don't care about) the vita ver has extra cg:s and new music and not all the cg:s are replacements for the H-scenes. And considering that FrontWing wants to keep both versions separate I find it unlikely that the 18+ version we're getting is going to be a complete version with content from both. I'll probably not pledge anything until January though.

I'll be backing it for that precise reason. I've already played Grisaia no Kajitsu. I've no reason not to buy the all-ages version.

As for the other two... Those aren't censored, right? It'd be really strange if they were and as far as I know, there isn't any censored version officially available in the first place.

There are VITA versions available for all the three Grisaia games (though I'm not sure if Rakuen is out yet) I don't know if they change anything though (other than the H-scenes of course).

Is that so? The more you know.

Let's see then...

Yeah, this is where my true colours shine through and my excuses go out the window. I'll support the kickstarter anyways. I just don't care about H-Scenes.

Well the kickstarter is at 137,000 already on day one. I'm going to back it so that I have a non-nude version of the hardcopies I can actually display...it all goes back to the idea of some people being collectors. Since not enough information is known about the 18+ version I'll save additional money in case I have to buy that one as well. I was originally going to put down 500, then it changed to 300, and since nothing was actually done it's now 120 just in case I have to pay extra for the 18+ version. If we don't get the 18+ version then that's that however everything seems to be pointing that it will be happening if this is backed. (Hell denpasoft is basically teasing it now). Regardless people will know soon about the 18+ version...Frontwing expected to do as well as Clannad...and well they are doing quite well in the first 24 hours and frontwing will see how quickly it got backed and push for an 18+ release. I do not however believe backers will get it free...it just seems unlikely I wouldn't be surprised if we got a voucher for a discount for anywhere from 25-50 percent off...I'd be ok with that.

It was also mentioned on the sekai project forum for those of you who do not wish to back with your money that you could donate a dollar to show interest and potentially get the voucher if backers get a coupon for the 18+ version. whatever I've now backed. I trust the translation will be top quality if nothing else.

This is the first Sekai Project KS I'll be sitting out on. I really don't like Grisaia very much aside from the common route of the first one. I simply don't have the money this time of year to blindly support any and all Sekai Project Kickstarters when I have no interest in the product. Luckily it looks like my pledge won't be needed anyway.

Really, the only way I pledge is if the second strech goal is hit. I want to see what other platforms they have in mind. If its Vita, I'm all in.

I just ... wow. I went to bed it was already at 96k. Now it's over 140k. I'm just stupefied by how fast that went.

I imagine it is. There was a vita port released in Japan after all.

Here's a little math for you guys:

899 people have funded this project as I am currently writing this message, and have raised in total $142,519. That being said, the average amount donated by each person is around $159. 899 people...that's not even close to the amount of people living in my hometown in the United States.

Now consider this:

That is 1 hometown. There are at least 280 different cities in Minnesota alone, and of those 280 cities, there is at least 3,000 people living in each. 280 multiplied by 3,000 is 840,000. At least 840,000 alone live in the state of Minnesota.

So let's take 840,000 and multiply it by 50, remembering that certain states will have a lot of population differences. The total is about 42,000,000 people. Now the United States alone has around 319,000,000 people living in it, so let's say we are being super generous with this number crunch.

So let's take 42,000,000 and multiply it by the $159 per person in this pledge.

Grand Total: $6,678,000,000

Now let's imagine if all that money went straight into research for diseases and cancers. We'd have cures in no time.

My point is, people really love their porn, and this game shows how a lot of "nervousness" surrounding the funding of it was kind of pointless considering how devoted VN fans are.

Just, insane.

Well, you should also consider that 1 person has pledged $5000, one has pledged $3000, nine have pledged $1000, and 40 have pledged over $420 up to now.

Honestly, to the guy who spent $5,000 dollars, I would have just bought tickets to Japan and gone to buy the games myself. Sofmap has all 3 CE on them, and each 1 comes with pillow covers, bedsheets, additional h-scenes in a small DVD, and signed art. Hell, you could even buy the new Good Smile Company Amane figure coming out later next year and have plenty of money left over to enjoy the country and take a vacation.

Like I said, it was stupid for people to get worked up over if it would be funded or not. People who play VNs will fund this. Sekai Project is the Nintendo of the industry: keep funding projects we know are safe and whose formulas work (Mario, Zelda, etc.). What I would like to see is Sekai challenge themselves and try to fund something that doesn't get as much recognition. An example of this might be Aiyoku no Eustia. Fantastic game, yet not as well known.

I agree the $5k bucks is kinda ridiculous, but hey, it's not my money. As for funding something less well-known, I think that isn't a risk they're able to take yet.  What sekai project is doing is proving that there is a viable market for VNs in the west, and yes, while they may be taking the safe route for it, it's better for everybody involved that way. If they were to gamble on a lesser-known title and fail, it might just end up having negative consequences this early into the game. For now, they should just stick to the safer, easier to sell stuff (R.O.B. the robot anybody?) rather than gamble. Once things are a little better established, and companies in Japan start understanding that there is a market for VNs out in the west, that's when maybe SP can start experimenting a little.

I think the issue here is that Japan will never want to recognize the western market as being viable. VNs are already not well known in Japan, and most people who buy them are looked down upon by their society. I've asked some friends I know here about it, where half of them don't even know what a PC game is or that they even exist.

I could be wrong about that, but from how Japan is culturally speaking, I don't think they care about sharing their games with the rest of the world, which may also be why Sekai isn't able to fund anything else. I tried uploading YouTube videos of commentary on a certain game, yet Pulltop (which ironically has a subsidiary company) took down all my videos for copyright. If the Japanese game industry realized anything, it's that promotion will help sell their games. Still, maybe Sekai have asked and have been turned down, which wouldn't surprise me.

Well, now you're generalizing. Maybe there are some companies who would act like that, but I seriously can't imagine that most companies would say no to the potential of an entire market. Even if that is the case though, if we can just somehow get a single company to get the ball rolling, that would already be a victory by itself.

I think I mentioned it before in this thread but japanese visual novel companies do have cause to worry. They weren't even selling in this market yet and someone found out about Rapelay and made a big deal about it without doing proper research and then CNN picked up and blew it even further out of proportions (as they do with anything from Japan it seems...wonder what CNN has against Japan that constantly makes them try to vilify them). This was a rather large issue and seemed to cement the idea that the west is not viable for their products...it probably also does not help that since censorship is common in Japan and it is less so further west that the fear of importing content could be considered very dangerous to the companies as a business. It doesn't just have to do with potential legal ramifications of people in Japan obtaining uncensored products by a Japanese company (illegal) but it also has to deal with cost. It costs money to sell products in multiple countries because the people they originally got to do voices now will want a further cut of the profits (which if I'm correct in my understanding it works a bit like royalties.,.I could be completely incorrect) but also because of the fear that the japanese citizens will import from other countries for cheaper products. It could really hurt how the visual novel companies do business. It's the reason we've recent;y been seeing notes of not being able to ship to Japan. Japan from my experiences is all about business. It shouldn't be surprised that they don't see this as a means to further relationships with the west but rather as a means to potentially make a bit of profit. Interesting enough if visual novel companies actually began creating games and pushing or having westerners either back or have westerners in mind they could then cover all the costs in one fell swoop and factor overseas licenses and payments to voice actors and everyone else in the beginning stages of the game.

This is one of the reasons the minori visual novel game that might be able to get backed by purchases of Eden will be so important because it will be a new strategy that they can test out and see how well they do. This is a new area of business and it pays to be cautious in a new market as one small mistake can ruin all chances. It also is the perfect time to experiment with different strategies to see what works and what doesn't and to see reactions. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if multiple companies are watching how this plays out. They have probably already heard the discontent with the lack of 18+ initially so hopefully the next game to be picked up won't have that issue...or so we can hope.

I'm fully expecting the 18+ version to in fact be coming however there is a bit of a concern with that. How many people if they know the 18+ version is coming will simply withdraw their money from kickstarter (or change the amount they are backing?). It's for this reason that I believe they offered the extra features (tapestries, bedsheets, pillows) as it keeps some people invested even if the news is released mid-way through that there will be an 18+ version coming as well. If they had not offered those I would be a lot more worried. The backer rewards do a few things however; it firstly shows they have no problem with releasing that type of content in the West, it keeps people invested in the project even if they announce the 18+ version, and honestly it just shows that they do know what the fans want. This is totally a business transaction and I'm hoping for a sizable discount on the 18+ version for backing but the possibility we'll have to pay full price is there as well...which they might do since a bunch of people are refraining from backing the project til said announcement. They can also use the sales values on 18+ as a separate product for again surveys and the like.

Business wise this was a very smart strategy. Public Relations wise not so much. We'll know soon enough...rather amazing that both this and Clannad are close to making their initial goals after a single 24 hour day. That just goes to show me that it's not just the porn people are after. Clannad has no h-content and this has no h-content. There are plenty of people interested in this for parts of it not related to simple fap material. I'm sure the majority backing are hoping for fap material mind you but not everyone cares. I'm invested in the story and characters (even if it's not exactly the best visual novel it was quite enjoyable) and people want to support the game for those reasons...admittedly having the anime airing at this same time probably helped immensely as it has been getting rather decent responses from anime fans. It's an ecchi but with plot...and I think that confuses a lot of people. Whatever I have a trilogy hard copy coming and if the 18+ version is announced I'll be picking that up as well, would be much nicer if it was free or came with a hefty discount for backers but...uh...time will tell.

edit: TL,DR also I probably have said all this before lol.

The anime had a positive initial response but it has been getting progressively more negative. Also, a lot of the haters are probably already fans of the VN, while the anime-only watchers may not be aware of how much better the VN is. Anyways, the mere existence of the anime raises awareness of the franchise, which is a good thing for the kickstarter, regardless of the show's reception.
