I was wondering, since I've noticed that in Grisaia, the words "cock", "dick", "pussy", "poop", and "Yakuza" are all bleeped out. That's obviously due to Japan's ridiculous censorship standards, but I've never heard of Japanese entertainment having censored audio (aside from in Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, where "hymen" and "penis" were bleeped out). I also thought that they only really censored pictures/videos of genitalia, real and CG. I'm also fairly confused, since they don't censor "fuck", which literally means sex, but they'll censor words referring to genitalia. Anyone want to shed some light on the subject? If anyone wants me to bleep out the swears to make this thread more youth-friendly, just say so and I'll do it. I don't remember the profanity rules here at Fuwa; it's been almost a year since I signed up, and my memory is a little fuzzy on the topic. Nosebleed Posted March 28, 2014 Share Posted March 28, 2014 Only VN with uncensored words I've ever played was SonoHanabira where the word "Omanko" was repeated 100 times which made me aware that other VNs censor this stuff or replace it with "..." before finishing a sentence. For example "#supercoolMCname's ... entering my... *girly moans*" or with some vague word with no specific meaning. I'm not sure if it's mandatory to censor words in adult material that's bought.But I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I know in TV broadcasts it is but I don't know how it is for games. But yeah it seems pretty frequent from my personal experience. I honestly hate the bleeping, i prefer when they just omit the words. Kono Oozora had bleeps and it was so annoying in my opinion. I do, however, remember a scene in Da Capo 2 where Anzu tells you to beg like a dog, which also happens to be the word for penis: "chinchin" and everyone flips their shit. That was the whole sentence. Anyone else seen Japanese entertainment and VNs with a ridiculous amount of words censored? The fact that "Yakuza" was bleeped out astounded me. Nosebleed Posted March 28, 2014 Share Posted March 28, 2014 In the anime Gintama, the MC Gintoki complains that if he had golden hair (kiniro) instead of silver hair (giniro) the show would be called kintama (testicles) instead of gintama (silver soul). As funny as that pun might have been the word kintama got bleeped out, i don't understand why go through so much effort to ruin a decent joke with bleeps. But in anime it's more understandable. To me, it feels like those bleeps add a little more impact to the dialogue. It's especially fun when the characters are talking really fast (Binbougami ga and Gintama had some fun censors). I do get where they're coming from and some anime can pull it off and be funny. Seitokai Yakuindomo is prone to this. Da Capo also has some funny moments with censors where you can understand what's going on and its' enjoyable. I'm fine with it for most part I just don't understand some logic in some of the censors. But I have come across H-scenes in nukiges where the words for the genitals are bleeped out. That's what I don't understand. I really don't know if "Chinchin" is such an offensive word so I'm sorry if i'm being ignorant about it but as far as I know it's just another term for "penis". I've heard it uncensored in some VNs and censored in others even, that's what kind of confuses me. I've never heard "Chinpo" uncensored so this one seems more offensive than the first one. Those bleeps get rather irritating if you keep hearing them. It's a little funny, at least to me, because I don't expect it, but more than five times in five minutes and my patience gets a little short. I know some of the bleeps are just the VN devs making little jokes, but they can't all be joking. Do they censor swear words that refer to penises and female genitalia just in case the government doesn't like it and fines/punishes them? In some cases, they do censor the vulgar words (from what I've most recently played, AkaGoei and Grisaia), but this isn't a rule, as I'm pretty sure there were no verbal censors in AXANAEL - unless I somehow missed it. This is just a guess, but maybe putting in verbal censors allows the publishers to pull the rating down a notch, therefore make the product sell more? Copyrighted names are bleeped out as jokes very often, though, so they can reference things quite clearly with bleeping out just a single syllable. The most ridiculous censorship I've came across so far was in the game Drag-On Dragoon 3 (known as Drakengard 3 overseas), where they used the verbal censorship as a substitue for very vulgar speech. As in, it really seemed like since they didn't have words horrible enough, they just threw bleeps in there and random symbols to push it over the top. Though I am pretty sure this was just for the sake of the game's bizarre humour - there whole game is extremelly dark and brutal, with horrible murder taking place pretty much every single moment, yet they choose to censor a certain execution scene with a cutesy "Technical difficulties" CG. So in the end, while censorship is quite common in Japanese media, at least they've learned to use it in creative and hilarious ways, where it came to the point where I don't even mind it and do think it can make things actually better. In Kyonyuu Fantasy for example, they have no trouble with spelling out things like オチンチン, オマンコ, ペニス etc. not only in the textbox, but they don't bleep it out in the voice acting either.
