Ren's Anime Group

About a year ago, my friends and I started up our own anime group where we enjoy a night of fun filled shows and Coldstone ice cream. I thought it would be a cool idea to post in this forum about what exactly this little social click of ours entails and see what everyone thinks. I won’t bore you with the details of what started the idea per se, but I will give you the lowdown of how it works.

The way we run the group is that its 3 members (myself included) each select an anime to watch per round, where a “round” consists of all of us choosing a series of our choice. Each show shouldn’t be over 30 episodes in length, but exceptions may be made for certain occasions. We try to stay away from the popular anime that made it big in the US, but again, exceptions may be given if we feel the hype of the show is that great. In terms of watching each series with subtitles or as an English dub, the choice is up to the selector of said anime. The group meets about once a week and usually watches as many episodes as we feel is fit, sometimes watching all the shows at once. In this case, we watch 3 episodes from each series a night. After 3 rounds of shows (9 in total, which we consider being a "season" of anime) we host an Oscar award ceremony - we pick and choose the best from each show in that set, and discuss what we enjoyed the most. These Oscars usually have set categories and nominations we choose beforehand, so most of the voting is done in our own time via survey. Instead of just picking a choice for each nomination, we actually rate our choices from 1-9, with 1 being the best. In the end, the statistics balance themselves out and we can analyze what we feel really was the "best" anime that entire season. In this way, even if a show doesn't win in terms of being the greatest anime, it may have the best characters, and so on.

Recently, we added another member to our group, as well as making an occasional friend who watched with us apart of the fun as well. Subsequent rounds will try to consist of 5 complete anime if possible, but that might not always be the case. If so, you can always expect at least 3 anime per round from our "core" group.

With that said, here is the list so far. It is cumulative, so enjoy!

Note: Due to organizational purposes, additional anime will be added in future posts as time goes on. Below are the links to other pages for the group.

To follow up my previous post, here are the results for the Oscars we have held so far. My friend, not me, writes the analytics after we have all discussed the choices as a group. Seeing as we only recently added the photo sets for the 2nd season, the 1st season only contains the analytics without any hint to what the questions actually were. Apologies for that. Anyways, here they are:

Please Note: The screenshots below with spoiler tags obviously contain moments in the show that, well, are spoilers.

Season 1 Analytics -

Steins;Gate, Gurren Lagann, and Psycho Pass. Pretty solid rankings overall. That mysterious fourth bar was for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Here's how they stacked up concerning all categories (3 points for first, 2 for second, and 1 for third place in the votes):

tumblr_inline_mzs91cCNAx1sq1zlp.png

The big take away here is just how good Stein's Gate is - it won male lead, female lead, and female supporting character. Daru placed second in male supporting character (after Kamina, of course). The plot-related awards were also in Steins;Gate's favor.

That's not to say that the other anime were bad. Gurren Lagann is obviously fantastic, and Mirai Nikki and Psycho Pass also placed very well. However, the other choices did not really compete. There were less joke categories in this season's Oscars, which made it much more slanted towards the "highest quality" show. That being said, the shows that ranked poorly in this iteration of the awards were still enjoyable, and they did leave me with something, whether it be bus drivers, space heaters, or scenes with blatant child pornography.

Season 2 Analytics -

Mawaru Penguindrum was rated as the best anime, but it lacked the character depth that Attack On Titan had, which it used to squeeze out some extra points. I'm a huge Mawaru Penguindrum fanboy, but I also chose to watch AoT, so I'll let it slide. AoT and MP both had four 1st place finishes.

Biggest surprise for me was Angel Beats with 15 points. It came in a strong 4th place finish overall. Hinata blew out the male supporting character competition, scoring 2nd place votes from each of us.

Biggest disappointment in terms of the scores was Durarara. It had a number of 2nd place finishes (four!), but failed to capture any 1st place awards. I believe it suffered with Baccano! due to the lack of real main characters.

Those may ask what the color coding is for the scores on the right. Well, as I mentioned, we each picked three anime. I picked Mawaru Penguindrum, Madoka Magica, and Attack On Titan.

For the full list of scores, see this here. Please note this sheet does contain spoilers.

In addition, here are the photo sets for all the categories we chose (and yes, that is supposed to purposefully say "Hottest Gril") I prefer the George Foreman myself, she's pretty hot.

That's pretty awesome! I wish I did the same with my friends, but they wouldn't agree to it xD

PD: Kamina's not a supporting character, he's the main character until episode 8, where TTGL ends (?).

Yeah this one was a little tough, and when we were voting on nominations, it did stump us for a bit. Still, in the end we voted on it being that he really was there to "support" Simon throughout the show. He did score 1st place in the end though! :)

This would be an amazing activity to do with my friends... if I had any.

This did remind me of a certain meme just now, yes it did. :P

@ Nosebleed:

Honestly, I didn't make any of the charts. That was all done by the same friend of mine who does the analytics. He just sort of hands us the survey we make and we don't find out the results until they are tallied. It's a nice surprise that way I guess.

I would love to do something like this with my friends, but not quite to the point with charts. Unfortunately, none of my friends even know about my VN and anime interest. Anime's not really a very popular thing around here.

Funny you mention this, because I wasn't into anime until about the time we started this group. I had just finished playing through Little Busters and had heard it was already an ongoing show, and told my one friend (the same guy who introduced me to Katawa Shoujo) to at least watch it with me considering he hates VNs otherwise. I ended up feeling bad for making them sit through it, and was like you guys can get a choice of an anime as well. After that, it sort of just clicked and we did another round.

Wow, this is impressive. I have some friends irl that watch anime, but we never do anything as coordinated as this. Whenever we talk about what we're watching, it usually ends up with everyone pitching shows to everyone else, but nobody ever takes the time to watch anyone else's shows. (If that makes sense). This seems like a really cool solution. It'd just be really tricky to line up everybody's schedules...

Oh I almost forgot! If you have any interest in taking the surveys, feel free! Keep in mind some of the questions may be spoilers, but for the most part are pretty straightforward. If I notice enough people have done it, heck I can post them up sometime as well! 1-9, 1 being the best, answer all of the questions or some, your call.

Well, the dedication to anime you all possess is certainly impressive. Makes me want to join your group myself. But since that's not an option, I guess I'll just use this as a thread to pick up on some not so well known but still very good anime. Keep up the good work comrades.

Upon recent return to Fuwa, I thought I should update this thread with what our group has been up to. Although I reflected this in the original post above, here is the list of changes that my anime group has gone through:

1. As said above, we have increased our party base from its original 3 members to 5. We welcome the newcomers to our group and hope their choice of anime will be enjoyable as we tackle 5 shows per round going forward.

2. After round 9, we are celebrating our 1 year anniversary. Our group has come a long way since it started out, and has changed a lot since then. To celebrate we will probably host a party with food and drink (probably cupcakes) as well as dress up as our favorite characters in cheap cosplay outfits. The latter idea is more for the fact we are giant nerds and want to make fun of each other. Also, we plan to discuss the 3rd season's Oscar results as well as talk about what we enjoyed most from the group and what we can improve on going forward.

3. As said above, to celebrate the anniversary, we will be starting a bonus round of anime before we head into round 10. This round will be a catchup round, which we will watch a series of OVAs/movies from previous shows in previous seasons. This is more for enjoyment than anything, but it's a good chance for us to relive some of the great moments in previous months.

4. My friend, in addition to running the surveys for the Oscars, has now begun posting weekly updates via email that keep our group up to date on what has went on in previous weeks of anime. Here is an example of the most recent email update. Please note I changed some names to protect my friend's identities:

In addition, I have moved round 9 and on into a different post in order to reflect the change of watching 5 anime in 1 round. That post is located above and will continue being updated as per usual. Enjoy!

I'm with Stanleys on this one. I generally don't have the time to watch anime. There's usually other stuff I wanna do. That, and yeah, my real life friends aren't really into anime and stuff like that, or at least, not to the extent that I am. At the moment, I'm trying my best to focus on what I'm trying to do.

Sounds like you guys are having fun with this. I bet it's nice to do stuff you enjoy with other people and not being alone in it all. I have to say this is a really cool setup you got here and i'm sure it makes watching anime even more enjoyable. Maybe I should do something like this as well provided I can find some friends. Anyway I'll be sure to check out the results of Round 9 so be seeing ya.
