Floral Flowlove- Protagonist sees no worth in himself and believes the only way he can be worthy of the man who saved his life is to protect the main heroine without seeking anything in return. Ou no Mimi ni wa Todokanai- Protagonist protects the village in atonement for his friend dying as a result of his mission. If you don't mind reading a manga or watching an anime, Monster by Naoki Urasawa might be just what you are looking for. The main character goes on a huge quest after discovering that a boy whose life he saved years ago grew up to be a serial killer. There is also a character later on in the series who was responsible for several tragedies, but who retires from public life and is living the remainder of his life in guilt of what he's done.
