Some People Call Fate/Stay Night a Hentai Game, Is This True?

Hard to know considering how vague the definition of hentai is in english. As for my understanding of it, it seems people generally consider the sex scenes forced in and I would assume it doesn't overall effect that much though since I haven't read it I can't say for sure.

There are sexual and non-sexual versions of the game.  However, the sexual content in even the ero-versions is so low that calling it a true hentai game is pushing the definition a bit far.

Edit:  Sorry, I should elaborate.  Essentially, my take on this is that 'hentai' to otaku media is the same as 'porn' is to movies.  While the term 'eroge' encompasses FSN definitively (since eroge means any VN with erotic content at all), the term 'hentai' does not, because it would falsely indicate that the H content is the focus and majority of the content.

to be quite honest, it's a fucking miracle I'm still around playing VNs after actually reading and not skipping through that one first sex scene in FSN as my first h-scene ever. it's that low quality.

It is extremely poor quality. I kind of worded the post in a way to see what people might have to say from authoritative point of view, but in reality I also played FSN. Although it didn't bother me too much; my eyes just kinda glazed over and I went "Oh, we're doing this now I guess."

I wanted to stir discussion on the subject because I've seen lately that visual novels have been getting more mainstream talk (as mainstream as anime talk gets, that is) and the sentiment repeated over and over is basically visual novel = hentai game. It's pretty asinine, and I wonder if anyone else has experience with this.

It's a viewpoint that actually has a point when it comes to JVNs.  Most JVNs, whether charage or nukige, can be considered to be focused on sex, so they can also be considered to be hentai games.  I make a careful distinction because I want to be as precise as possible... and because we don't call all movies that have bed scenes porno.  However, if someone were to say that most charage and all nukige are hentai games, I wouldn't be able to deny it, since the ratio of sexual content to normal content in a nukige is identical to that of a porno movie.  With charage, it varies from game to game, but I've encountered charage that I could have considered to be CG porno.

In addition, asking the average person to make that kind of hair-splitting distinction is unrealistic at best, arrogantly overbearing at worst.  This is like the old knee-jerk reactions most anime fans from my generation have when someone calls anime cartoons, lol.

Even if it has low sexual content, from the way h-scenes are written and from the ecchi fanservice buildup to them, i'm willing to call VNs with H content hentai games. For Fate/Stay Night specifically, i wouldn't dismiss it entirely as a h-game because there is a non-h version. Maybe that issue could be completely cleared if Realta Nua got a proper localization. *hint hint*

Maybe we'll get a proper Fate/Stay Night remake with a Western release. In like 15 years. 8-10 years after they finally finish the Tsukihime one. :mare:

I'd say it depends on your definition. Take Game of Thrones for example, I'd say that has more sexual content than many, many VNs, still it furthers its respective world and it's fitting to show (most) of it and I'd say most people wouldn't call it porn. A good VN would try to create it's scenes in a similar way, many don't however and instead get into a different writing style, play some mellow music and basically create a cheap porn scene by being shallow. I'd say FSN fell into that trap.

Still, hentai or pornographic doesn't equal bad in my opinion, the question is rather how it is used.

Monster Girl Quest is a pretty hardcore nukige, very fetishy to boot, still all its content is a logical conclusion of the world it's trying to build, same (mostly) for Funbag Fantasy and Euphoria. There are some nukige that embrace their sexual content as a way to create the world they are trying to make and that usually shows. I think these are often better received and accepted than a charage or plotge, which includes shallow porn scenes that go against the flow of the rest of the VN. It's a similar approach to GoT, though I wouldn't call it equal.

If I based that on whether it have sex scenes or not, then yes I'll just bluntly said that original Fate is a hentai game because it have sex scenes (Whether the first sex scenes in there is reasonable or not is another matter though, or whether the way on how DEEN adapted it (By the way I didn't remember watch the dragon back when I watch original Fate anime in Animax at 2007)). That said, it didn't really lessen the value of the story though seeing that Type Moon did make console version of that, and of course it grew so big that it have Fate Grand Order. Besides, it's not like people in Indonesia here wouldn't be able to know the depth of VN anyway, at least for general public back when Fate published and years after (Can't exactly blame them though, seeing that most of the translated VNs releases are nukige (Or normal BNs with sex scenes) and there's no all age version like Steam version nowadays, and more importantly I also think like that before seeing more VNs such as Tsukihime and Clannad).

PS - While Monster Girl Quest is classified as nukige in VNDB, actually I wouldn't want to call it as that because it have some interesting story and the reception for that is really good. Also most of the sex scenes are drawn badly anyway, so perhaps you may avoid that if possible. Same goes with Frontier in which while it have sex scenes, actually you can avoid most of it and it really have good gameplay there (The story of that is not too bad either). So long story short I wouldn't say that Monster Girl Quest and Frontier as nukige even though VNDB said so, but of course I understand if people said those two as hentai game.

Well, game of thrones may have more scenes but the scenes are a lot more subdued than vn's. You can watch game of thrones sex scenes with your mom, could you do so with a vn h scene?

To be honest, I don't think I'd watch either with my mom, but shoutouts to all young, liberal moms out there.^_^

I picked GoT as an example, because if you stop and think about it, it depicts rape, prostitution (implies child prostitution), incest, monster sex and sexual slavery, not the topics of a polite dinner conversation where I come from, (Topics VNs happen to frequently pick up, mostly with a 180 on the morals of it ) but all of them are used for world building, character building and shock value and that makes it okay, even mainstream.

If a VN makes use of its H-scenes to the same effect it usually makes it a better VN, just because the story progresses more naturally. However, the 2D stigma is strong and even if a VN were to use its H-scenes like that, it would still be considered porn by most, which makes it double standards. Being realistic, a lot of VNs certainly deserve to be called porn, but imagining a hypothetical large scale fantasy medieval plot heavy VN using, among others, ("tasteful") sex, to flesh out its world is kind of fun for me, even though it's a waste, since it will likely never exist.^_^

Edit: Fun fact, I just finished playing Ikusa Megami Zero, which almost pulls it off. If they had just toned down the sex magic a little bit more, it could have been.
