Fifty bucks for a 800x600 old-ge seems like an overkill. Considering it's realeasing at the same time as VB, it might flop. Would be amusing tho.

What resolution does Venus Blood -Frontier- have? I mean it came out only 3 years after Baldr Sky. So calling one old-ge seems kind of silly.

It looks like VBF is $10 cheaper? But Baldr Sky is two games and quite a bit longer.

But in the end those comparison don't make much sense.

I find it so fascinating how big of a difference there is between prices of VNs in the west and here in Japan. 7000-9000 yen for a new game is completely normal here, (so between 70-80usd). In fact, you don't really see them go much cheaper. Usually "older" games are dropped down to 5000-6000 yen. (45-55usd) If you want to buy a big game like Baldr Sky for less than that in Japan, you'll have to wait for some massive sale, and even then you might be out of luck*. The fact that people even find 30usd to be fairly pricy for a standard VN is just crazy to me. Over here 2500-3500 yen is only really standard for shorter titles, like 2-10 hour nukige and stuff like that.

Isn't this mainly because those are hardcopies? I mean, if I check the Getchu download center, I see titles like Maitetsu for just 455 yen (link NSFW) - that's dirt cheap even for western standards. Sure, not everything is as cheap there, newer download titles in particular don't seem much cheaper than their hardcopy counterparts, but many older ones seem to be significantly cheaper. And western releases are usually all download versions.

I've also several Japanese hardcopies which have art books, tapestries and other stuff included, so a higher price for those is somewhat justified. On the other hand, I've also a few where there's just a lot of empty air in a huge box.

"We are hoping to have the patch live within the first 24 hours after the game is released."

That seems a bit ambitious given how little we know about the new release.  Kudos to them if they actually pull it off.  (Actually, kudos to them either way.)

shiny days restoration patch

Ahhh... good times. Even with the restoration patch, it still somehow managed to be the most broken VN I've ever read, by a long shot. (Don't ask me how I managed to keep my sanity intact long enough to actually finish the damn thing.)

I don't understand though why they list 18+ years old for all cast in the the adult warning, seeing that usually it meant for the one with sex scenes (To be fair they didn't list nudity though). Although if we want to think hard, perhaps both of Sekai and GIGA did lazy to change the warning seeing that it's obviously intended for Japanese player. In any case, I'll just hope that the censorship would worth the trouble if we'll going to have the new content here that GIGA will created (Otherwise the censorship will be wasted). Also I hope that Sekai will be more open to inform when they'll need to censor the release in case some developer was quite stubborn to not bring 18+ contents oversead like GIGA here.

PS - The one who will make 18+ patch is SteppenWolf who as we know created Baldr Force patch, so I hope that they have most up to date tool to hack Sekai's version engine seeing that the font that Baldr Force have is very hard to read.

Sekai Project wrote a blog post about the changes they had to make in Baldr Sky.

Due to licensing requirements we are not able to supply any 18+ content in an official capacity. We've complied a list of changes in the blog post below, thank you for supporting us.

The blog post is very thorough in what was changed so you should give it a read.

But here is the TL:DR: About 4% of lines had to be removed, including explicit sex scenes and lines referencing explicit details.

It's sad that GIGA insisted that they could not release a uncut version but here we are. This still doesn't rule out an unofficial uncensor patch. So that chance still remains.

This is actually Steam requiring it. They won't allow it otherwise.

What surprised me the most is that initially GIGA wanted to censor also other things beside sex. They seem to have some really skewed view of Western market.

That explains the long radio silence on the issue.  And also why, 18 months or so ago, Sekai said more info would be forthcoming at some con ... and said announcement never happened.  Those kind of negotiations are highly sensitive and have to be kept secret.

They still should know it isn't hard to say 'Negotiations are more sensitive and complex than we had hoped.  We have no further updates at this time.' and move on.  Would have saved themselves a lot of flak.

I'm pretty curious about "Noi's unlockable plugin" and the lines that the Mascot has.  Regardless, it sounds like they put some actual effort into their censorship instead of just haphazardly cutting shit out and making characters appear clothed without changing references to nudity.  I'm probably going to tackle the all-ages version for this one.

If only more English fans could read and write japanese, we could all write letters to giga, to let them know what the western market is really like. Has anyone ever tried writing a petition to a japanese developer? Maybe write a petition with both an english and Japanese translation, and have everyone in the community sign it! Unfortunately my japanese isn't good enough to do it myself.

im sure the english publisher, translation team has tried. Maybe.

If Sekai did explain earlier, my blame still go to GIGA anyway seeing that Sekai did have 18+ VN release in the past and that it's not surprising because we have Pulltop as well. Also I just find out that GIGA did spawned Aquaplus and Leaf which as we know recently like to going console by releasing it on PS4, so it shouldn't be surprised if GIGA want the overseas release is all age like Utawarerumono trilogy. In any case, I just hope that no official VN localization company wouldn't take GIGA license anymore, but instead I hope that either ATLUS or NISA will work together with GIGA (After all, it should reduce a lot of controversy here). Oh almost forget to say that the initial price that GIGA offer is too pricey at US$ 75, which it's too expensive eventhough it's initially sold as two VNs.

To respond Kiriririri here, I guess they want to avoid Valve's tantrum then. Still it's not quite explain why they add tag 18+ though seeing that some of Sekai VN that was available at Steam didn't have that warning even though it have uncensored patch available, so perhaps it's just GIGA and Sekai was too lazy to modify the warning. Of course by that it mean I'm wrong when I say that it wouldn't be censored just because it have 18+ year old warning here.

I will still argue the people arguing anti-censorship are just repressing their sexual desires and saving face trying to say they only care about censorship

But I know what they REALLY want

I have the rare perspective of a person that is at best mildly turned on by most hentai and I confirm that it's hard to be anti-censorship on principle alone. Especially when you'd prefer for a lot of that stuff to be gone anyway, as it's rarely anything else than boring/annoying. ;p

At the same time, this whole discussion is quite curious, because I have a lot more doubts about whether the all-ages-only approach is as stupid with a gameplay VN such as Baldr Sky as it is with pure "waifu game" VNs. GIGA probably hopes to market it to a broader crowd than just VN fans and for that, even vague association with porn could make things complicated. It probably won't work, but for a developer, trying to compete with games such as Danganronpa or JRPGs, and not aiming at the ultra-niche VN fandom might sound like something worth a shot. It's not like you can reasonably argue having 18+ content is not a handicap when it goes to reaching distribution platforms and general visibility. Japanese companies often don't understand the Western market and do stupid stuff, but I don't think every instance of them cutting h-content is out of ignorance...
