I'm interested in learning what others really like in terms of pairing. Basically, do you prefer BxG romance or Yuri romance etc. I'm interested because I just saw a poll and saw that both guys and girl really wanted a certain pairing. I was surprised by this honestly. I'm curious to know what type people really like and why.

While I'm fine with yuri on occasion, my preference is for the standard relationship types (female dominant or male dominant is fine).  Generally speaking, I don't have a strong attachment to romance as a plot element in general, though... so if there are no h-scenes, I can even play shounen ai, lol.

I can understand what you're saying. I'm like that with BxG, but can play anything. Similar to you, I also don't need romance in the story to enjoy it. See I ask this because a poll showed that both men and women preferred Yuri over everything else. I was surprised 0-0. And what you say also is really interesting to. Would more people play BxB, for example, if it was just shounen ai? I wonder.

Maybe... tbh, with me, it is all about the genre.  I would never play a shounen ai or yuri romance, because I have no interest in either... I got that out of my system relatively early on.  I have problems with otomege because almost all protagonists in otomege are damsels in distress (which ups my blood pressure).  However, I'll at least try any fantasy or sci-fi action if the romance doesn't distract from it, lol.

Well, you just pinpointed why I don't play most otome games lol. That's exactly the reason. The reason I went to the other pairings was because I couldn't take them. Now, I will play them should the MC be okay. Same goes with anime with GxB. Sadly, my love for otome games isn't really here anymore. But it got me more into BxG, so I can read those games better now. Like you, I like fantasy and scifi the most, but like slice of life still. But fantasy and even horror are things I like even outside of visual novels. Sadly, there aren't to many fantasy stories =(

Assuming the first letter is the protagonist, my first choice for visual novels is GxG and my second choice is BxG.  I don't play the other two types.  I'm a straight male, but I don't need to see guys in games.  I typically turn the male voices off when that option is offered.  In the games, I don't speak much to the male side characters unless I have to.  When I play roleplaying games with romantic possibilities, I check online to see which option gives me more female romances to choose from and pick that option for my character.  If they are equal, I'll play as a female character and go with a GxG route.

Overall, I don't care. Like some other people above, I don't really play vns for romance or sex, so whatever works is fine for me. That said, historically I played a lot more bxg VNs than any other type simply because they are easier to find and seem to be closer to the types of stories that interest me, though recently I've been kind of fed up with how much they focus on hentai. Still, I can't really call it a preference. When it comes to manga or lns, I actually like a lot of plot-focused shoujo too.

I enjoy reading B×G more than G×B since it's more my taste when it comes to VN and I love otome games very much, I used to be into B×B but not much anymore and I'm not fan of G×G well it depends it have good story.

I love VN with gameplay and good story, so I can read B×B VN so long it have good story and big + which it have gameplay element.

GxG is definitely my favourite, after that it gets complicated... In a way, I quickly got bored of BxG and in EVNs often enjoy GxB more. Western otome games are generally more romantic and write their female characters a bit better than similar-quality male-oriented ones. I also haven't read many Japanese otomege, so I never got exposed that hard to the more infuriating tropes. I still enjoy BxG a lot and otome mostly speaks to me when the protagonist is visible and well-defined, so you can call that a tie.

BxB generally does nothing for me, as a romantic setup. I might enjoy a good story in the formula, but it's nearly always my last choice – and having literal hundreds of VNs to choose from...

One issue with Japanese GxB/otomege is that they are an outgrowth of what is called 'classic shoujo manga style'.  Almost all Japanese GxB is written with a female protagonist being dominated by a cast of male alphas.  For me, it is immensely frustrating, since I started playing otomege thinking there would be some strong women, at least in the chuunige-like ones.  However, this wasn't the case, unfortunately...  The only otomege that ever managed not to annoy me was Sanzen Sekai Yuugi.  It is partially an outgrowth of the same bad literary habits that gave birth to the non-person protagonist in moege/charage, but another part of it is an ingrained cultural image of the place of women in Japanese culture that remains even now.

To be blunt, I'm not a submissive by nature.  I can be passive if I don't have an interest in an argument, an object, or a discussion.  However, I have to actually rein myself in from going after what I want fighting tooth and nail.  As such, beta protagonists drive me crazy, and protagonists who don't have a set personality are just as bad.

Edit: I can make exception for beta protagonists who are capable in other areas/are stubborn about the things they care about, but that exception doesn't really cover as many as you'd think.

I'm fine with any of those really, but since I'm a (male) seiyuu enthusiast and cute bois in general I'm more inclined to read games with male romance interests.

My tolerance to high school shenanigans and ecchi humor is very very low though (and I'm not the biggest fan of things quickly going straight to porn) so going by interesting settings and having adult characters, it always end up like this for me: BxB >>> GxB >>> GxG >>> BxG

Well, in the end the results depends of where you're asking.

I play VNs mostly for history, not for romance, but I still have my preferences in romance-focused VNs, for example, I tend to hate GxB/otomegame for the fact that most of the time it's the same VN, different places, "a fragile girl surrounded by aggressive (Romance-wise) men, except for one that for some reason will be a slim and "cute" introvert, normally short-haired (and probably blue-haired), or having bangs-over-eyes character", and the plot is most of the time, non-sense or some rip-off, however, of course, there are exceptions.

I feel that normally GxG has a better character development and plot, but whenever I find a GxB that is actually good, it is tends to be extremely good, my score for most of GxB is either 1~5 or 9~10.

However, as nothing is as sweet as Rapadura, I used to work as a Voice Actor for some time, and when i'm voice acting, I tend to reaaally get into character and because of so I get really into role-playing whenever I play a game, I immerse myself as the character, but i can't do this when the game is BxB because I can't see myself as gay, thus it is normally like:

BxG > GxG > GxB > BxB
That's if we're counting the overall GxB, if we're counting only the good ones, then it changes to:
BxG > GxB > GxG > BxB

I mostly play VNs for the romance experience. I like sci-fi and fantasy settings just fine, but on average I get better/more satisfying stories out of the books I usually read. VNs basically cover a type of narrative I'm not used to from traditional books and that lends itself well to heavily character based and character interaction driven stories.

For japanese VNs my preferences are BxG > GxG > BxB > GxB

Western VNs handle GxB better, with more relatable or just more interesting protagonists. So the last two would be reversed for western VNs. (Not hating on BxB, if I had to pick I'm just more inclined to girls)

Why choose one when you can have both?

if you play a trap game you have both GxG for a while, and then BxG after the identity is revealed.

Jokes aside, I'll play anything with a good plot, even shounen ai, although I prefer stories that are more BxG and GxB specific.

I agree that the Japanese cultural paradigm features a lot of hapless female protagonists that require salvation my some male alpha, with some exceptions. I don't generally play OEVNs so I can't comment on that.
