Hoi! I just wanted to ask why you guys like to play visual novels, i'm not sure why i guess i just like hearing other peoples reasons for why they like them!^^ I guess it wouldn't be fair to ask without giving my own reasoning though, the reason i like Visual Novels is because I've always been attracted to the idea of them, the idea that its story and you're the one who gets to pick how its told has always been cool to me!

Because I like otaku medium like manga and anime and this is just another medium within that interest and I feel like it is valuable to consume all of them because there are worthwhile things to experience in each.

Also I think there are things VNs are capable of doing better than other mediums in general like animestyle porn, mystery or harem and as such I generally enjoy these things more in VNs than I would have in other mediums.

To see girls vomit on me

There's so few VNs with that though... I think you'd have more luck with fetish porn sites. ^^

As to the main topic... I have some very peculiar personal reasons which led me to getting more involved with VNs, but in general, they combine goergous art, interesting stories and romance in a way that I really enjoy. Plus they are the best source of yuri content (at least outside of manga, which I generally don't read), to which I'm pretty much addicted to at this point. :3

I read visual novels because they are a form of literature. Unlike most literature, reader has more choice in the narrative with nonlinearity. (Except for kinetic novels, but I digress) Thus being able to explore multiple themes, motifs, and various point of views. Reading visual novel literature exercises the imagination. We enjoy stories; it is a pleasure to meet characters and to live in their world, to experience their joys and sorrows. In a practical sense, an active imagination helps us perceive truth, make value judgments, and deal with the complexities of life in creative ways. There are quite a visual novels deal with heavy topics such as grief, depression, and addiction. While many JVNs are essentially porn, while many EVNs are, well, meme-filled parodies. There are some visual novels that hold literary and philosophical weight like Wonderful Everyday that’s inspired from many works such as but not limited to: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, Critique of Pure Reason by Immanuel Kant, and The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

I don’t just read visual novels— I create them as well. But that’s beside the point of your question.

TL;DR  I read visual novels because they are art.

Visual Novels are, as far as I know, the absolute best source of Slice-Of-Life Romance stories with tangible romantic progression. Romance stories via other mediums tend to focus on drama or offer absolutely nothing (or very little) of people who already got together and are dating or married.

It's also gotten to the point where I've become very fond of anime art.

(But please, if anybody knows stuff that proves my first statement wrong, do point me in the right direction.)

To slow down the growth of my growing depression. Ironically sometimes they make me feel worse. Those are always fun.

I started to really get into VNs when my depression was at its worst. But even dark stories usually make me feel better as they at least evoke an emotional response.

The reason I read VNs is a different one though. I like reading, but need auditory stimuli to really concentrate, so VNs are the perfect compromise between those two things.

i Like to read and I like good stories. While VNs (mostly) meet both of these criteria, in addition to books they have that visual bonus where you see the characters faces and their expressions which makes the story so much more alive. Plus you often - if they are not kinetic VNs - have the option to influence the story! It's also quite nice that they often contain romance :)

And to top it off, with Japanese VNs I can practice that language - listening and reading!

Ya I agree about the emotional response. I was numb for such a long time so to finally experience emotions was really nice. Eden* was amazing and actually got me to cry a few times. I have been going through a really tough withdrawal from drugs and VNs saved me. I felt like I had the flu for almost 2 weeks. I will always love VNs because of this.

it's a great medium with a lot of potential. it can combine beautiful music and art with vivid prose. it's simple, but also complex. vns can't be described in a single way. they're like a chimera of creative mediums. they're associated with porn, which allows authors to display graphic sexuality in their works without fear of backlash. it's hard for me to explain why i like vns so much, and i can only recommend masterpieces such as subahibi, bible black, mgq, socrates jones, and danganronpa v3 in hopes that you'll understand where i'm coming from~~~

Visual novel = anime + novel for me, and theoretically it's the best medium to provide glorious long stories.

I'm mostly fascinated with visual novels because of the amount of efforts the Japanese put into those. I compare the number of Western games with the number of Japanese Visual Novels over the same periods of times, and get absolutely shocked by the results of just one nation in just a single genre. And that goes even for early 80s - VNDB has only a small portion of Japanese visual novels from 80s.

I'm absolutely assured in Japanese cultural supremacy in the last two decades. Anime, manga and dorama are too short to my liking and are too well covered, while visual novels offer thousands of worlds for tens of hours of time each, and remain in obscurity for all this time. Every big anime resource like MAL does not want to get involved with visual novels just because they aren't popular enough. Well, that's one thing that can change.

Hmm... Partly because I like anime and Japanese games in general. Also because of the wonderful cute art and the music as well. I suppose the Japanese has a why of telling narrative stories in a unique way. Heck there was a time when JRPG dominated the entire RPG Games Genre in ages past until games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment got into the scene and started the golden age of Western RPGs or CRPGS.

Well one of other reasons that I've played Visual Novels is I desire "Variety" in playing games, I just get bored when I play too much first person shooter or RPGs. In addition for weird reasons my imagination or creativity just gets mysteriously reignites when I play VNs and stuff...
