Can't we just settle on making an option of turning the honorifics on and off like in Newton and the Apple Tree?

And I'll also just throw my two cents here saying that I also prefer games being translated instead of localized. Since I'm not from the US and there are customers from all around the world that want to read, not just NA.

And it just feels awkward to have characters saying american memes and slurs because those fit in the localisation, I already suffer with these enough in regular games.

But that's just my preference.

I know/am learning Japanese, but since I am not fluent in the language yet. I do am a customer for the offered products so I will let my opinion here too, it's absurd to say that you can't complain about a product that you are the consumer like some users said that we should just learn JP if not happy~

I do think that the translation turned to be okay for this title reading the reasons! And of course, it's not by using honorifics or not, some nicknames, etc. That we define a great translation from a bad one! It's by properly translating the nuances and story into English.

But we all have our feelings and voices about our preferences in translations, especially in localisations and say them in hope for them to be recognized and known, to them be considered by the companies and receive a product that is closer to what we wish to see.

Now this can not be anything more than a "Don't tell us translators how it should be" statement. I certainly hope the translator is above being childish like that, but it's hard not to think so after the SukiSuki incident.

One thing that's become abundantly clear to me from all of this is that people have different preferences. I've never yet met a localization professional who made a controversial decision simply out of childishness, or to try to stick it to part of the fan base. We just each have our own preferences and our own beliefs about how we think the work should be done. I already gave my explanation here, as to what we did in this case and why:

The one thing I want to add to that is, a lot of people seem to have taken screenshots like the linked one out of context and misunderstood the nature of the translation decisions we made. It's my hope that people will read the explanation I provided earlier and maybe get a little clearer picture of the reasoning involved. My personal belief is that this decision went a long way to help capture the playfulness of the character. I'm obviously aware that not everybody feels that way, especially over on good ole 4chan...

Personally, my ideal translation probably looks something like the work being done on the Dragalia Lost mobage, which is widely praised for the quality of the English localization and which takes often extreme liberties in the name of writing a compelling English script. I'm amazed at every aspect of the localization: the creativity, the consistency, and the sheer fun of it. It's the kind of work that I both enjoy to read and aspire to do myself, even if maybe it isn't the kind of work that a subset of the English-reading VN fan community prefers. So if you see something you don't like in something I work on, before you dismiss it as a "bad translation", I ask that you give me the benefit of the doubt by first asking, "Is this an outright mistake, or simply a point where I disagree with their localization decision?" And if it's the latter, maybe consider that you can probably get over that and move on, the same way I get over it and move on when I'm reading the 95% of VN translations which are intent on making decisions I don't agree with, like keeping honorifics.

I don't know, I'm ready for the tomato throwing but it's like the Ace Attorney or FE Fates discussion again. Do those read great in english? Of course. But it's often hard to even consider them a translation, more of a fanfic material made specifically for the western market. I didn't care much in their cases but I would definitely be pissed if someone translates a game/VN I'm actually interested in like this. Everything is good in moderation, in the skilled hands things can read great and not stray too far away from the source material. Treating original text with respect is most vital, mutilating it because this seems like the only way to produce a "more compelling english" is almost arrogant and only shows lack of ability.

Completed the first ep and, despite it feeling deliberately anti-climactic, the experience was pretty good, I'm very eager to read the future installments. All characters are highly entertaining and the general plotting is intriguing enough to curse at Sekai if they stall or don't release subsequent episodes. The chances of which are... not low enough :notlikemiya:

Spoiler

Buuuuuuut since the episodes are not self-contained at all and the first one ends with a literal "to be continued in the other branches", it's bound to feel a bit unsatisfying. I feel like the first episode doesn't contain enough crucial moments or important information to play on its own, it's basically very introductory and even the very first mistery remains unsolved, it doesn't end with suddenly revealing a false bottom to hook you or anything. Merely a lot of hints for things to come that... you'll probably forget by the time they complete the story.

I also didn't really like how they divided the two playthroughs, that major decision which ultimately leads to the bad end branch is way too obviously and horrifyingly bad to the point it's even uncharacteristic for the otherwise intelligent and thoughtful protagonist to make it. They then make matters even worse by revealing that Miyako can only reliably read the thoughts that people actually have recently had on their mind so... Kakeru kept thinking about this huge secrect he keeps from her but still didn't consider letting Miyako freely read his mind/memories to be a problem? Seriously? And then he even ran around FOR A WEEK not realising what could have made her that cold and desperate? Ideally, when this kind of trick is used, the reader is kept in the dark about the accidental mistake for as long as possible, not suddenly question sanity of the generally smart protagonist the moment that mistake is made.

On the more positive side, romantic part is handled very well and Miyako is positively adorable, a pity she's just a "beginner's heroine" and we'll probably get stuck with the chuunibyou girl during the most important episode. The writing is so good that even h-scenes can be enjoyed just as much as any other text in the game and aren't just a filler porn they are so often meant to be. The main storyline isn't that complex and won't "wow" anyone but still is very dynamic and engrossing, I don't remember feeling bored at all.

Also, Sora is a real MVP and... that's also why I'm disappointed she is going to be the next heroine. I'm not really into incest and she's such an amazing support character that I'd prefer if she just were a major part of all the routes as your sister buddy but... I guess this is eroge for you, what can ya do.
