Need help deciding what to read next...

So I currently have a backlog and am having trouble decided what to read first from these 5: If my heart had wings, Koichoco, Hatsukoi 1/1 and also have Saku Saku and Dracu Riot in the log too.

I enjoyed the anime of Koichoco and probably will like the VN but just havent read it because I lack the drive I guess lol.

IMHHW, I heard it was a good VN but feel the same about it.

Hatsukoi, I heard the MC is a useless and terrible excuse of a man (Heard that the dev apologized for this too), how bad is he exactly? Does it take away any interest because of that?

I heard Saku Saku really just had forced drama and wasn't a very well written narrative. Is this true?

Dracu-riot is another VN I heard that the protag acts pretty dumb around girls (In particular, he wont even hold one heroine's hand on a date, because he is in front of people. That's just screams a bad protag to me.) Is this true as well?

So which of these do you think I should start on?

From that list, go with IMHHW, just be sure to grab retranslation patch. It's the "safest" one from that list, without controversial protagonist (Hatsukoi) or heroines (Chisato from Koichoco ;) )

However, I've read every one except Dracu-riot (vampires are not my thing), and liked them all. Even Chisato ;)

Don't worry you are not alone. Don't get why people don't like her and protag together? Or just don't like her in general.

Usually vampires aren't my thing either. I liked the fortune arterial anime so I wanted to read it but found out it only has a partial patch. And the current patcher has literally progressed nowhere saying " It's on the technical side of things right now" and that has been that way for nearly a year so I doubt it'll ever see the light of day. VNR didn't work either but yeah just heard that dracu-riot was decent as well and so I've had it since I got fortune arterial.

I haven't watched the anime, but here's my opinion of her from the VN (with some spoilers from it, so don't read if you want to avoid them):

Spoiler

During Chisato's initial route, I actually kinda liked her, despite her being a bit overly possessive/jealous, but as I went through the other routes, I grew to dislike her more and more. I mean, I get that she likes Yuuki and therefore doesn't like seeing him hanging out with other girls, but the fact that she's so consumed by her own selfishness that she goes out of her way to actively sabotage Yuuki's relationships with other girls (she even admits doing this during at least one of the routes), despite knowing he has no romantic interest in her, really annoyed me.

During the Isara route, she even goes as far as to hit Yuuki and says she hates guys like him, simply because she can't cope with the fact that he happened to choose another girl. Overall, he got way more crap than he deserved during that route, what with almost all of his friends abandoning him after the campaign started going south. Then, as soon as Yuuki and Isara managed to come up with the idea to turn things around, all those so called "friends" came crawling back again. The entire downward spiral was, of course, initiated by Chisato abandoning the club due to a fit of jealousy. The other members are certainly also at fault for leaving one by one after that, but I doubt we would've seen that entire chain of events if Chisato hadn't gone berserk. As mentioned during the route, they might've even been able to come up with a better solution to the discrimination problem if they had stuck together, and maybe even win the election in the end.

Going back to the original topic, I've only read If My Heart Had Wings and Koichoco out of the ones you mentioned, but I enjoyed IMHHW the most out of those two. In fact, it's on my top 5 VN list. It has some very lovable characters and an amazing soundtrack, among other things. I wish there was a bit more drama, but I didn't expect there to be much of that in the first place so I can't really say I'm disappointed.

If you're going to pick IMHHW, just make sure to, like adamstan mentioned, grab the retranslation patch, since the original localization by Moenovel is a complete disaster.

Spoiler

But then she kind of redeemed herself in Michiru's route. That's why it's good route to save for last, as that way there's some kind of character development for Chisato, who finally lets go of Yuuki. I think I read (Chisato) > Satsuki > Isara > Mifuyu > Michiru.

And I totally second Konosora for having amazing music and lovable characters.

As for Chisato, yeah she's the worst at Isara's route from the review that I saw. But then again, the people around Yuuki was act like that so we can call Isara's route as soap opera route here if you dislike it, because there's a lot of dramatic moment there (At least from what I can interpreted here).

I guess Chisato here is too infamous for Japanese people just like HatsuKoi MC, so much that they writing the character of her expy (Appearence wise) in Aokana (Asuka) differently and as the result it make Asuka become likeable to a degree. Also from what I'd hear, Aokana here did get rid of the forced play order so at least we can say that Sprite realized that Koichoco route system is a divisive system.

As for HatsuKoi, while I did hear that he was infamous most of his worst moment was only at both if Yukino's and Runa's route from what I saw. Otherwise, I think he did good enough job there. If you hesitate to play HatsuKoi because of that, then you can wait until Hoshiori being translated in which it shouldn't be took years to be finished. As for Dracu Riot, well I would say that it's quite usual for Yuzusoft that the MC here is quite shy to hold her hand, so I would say that it's pretty normal one lol. Saku Saku, well apparently it looks like soap drama as well with some drama involving the heroines route, but if you curious then you can try to check it out. As for the recommendation here, in the end like Adamstan here I'll just recommend Konosora and make sure you did use the available fan patch because Pulltop did messed up with their overseas release (Their first messed up work to be exact). Although if you want to check on other four VNs later, feel free to do so.

Just started IMHHW. Probably going to read Koichoco at some other point. And on the topic of Aokana, probably won't be getting it when it's translated because Sprite won't let them have the demosaic version be available. Usually not a deal-killer for me, but if I am paying good money I expect I shouldn't have to deal with a Dark-ages method of hiding nudity in addition to a stubborn company(Yeah I know I have Koichoco which is censored but it was never officially translated so I was understanding of it). Like, their censorship laws are completely bogus and devoid of reason. Any Japanese person with an inkling of computer knowledge would just 1. Use Vpn 2. Log on to porn site 3. All the uncensored and unpixelated sexual content is available. It's clearly an ancient law and easily circumvented these days. I have bought other VNs that are censored but I accept them because they are usually plotges and not just a basic eroge. Most companies release the demosaic'ed version when they strike a translation deal anyways.(And the ones that don't are few)[Oh and I know not all games had a demosaic'ed version of the cgs anyways , one being the devs of melty moment saying there was nothing drawn underneath the mosaic which is very understandable, but companies like Sprite saying they have them but refusing to release them is just ridiculous, oh and I am aware that reverse importation could be an issue but look at the 1000s of VNs that have released these versions. MOST are still around (From way back in the early 2000's even) and no litigation was ever filed against them.]

In that case, then I would suggest you to not buy Saku Saku because it's still have mosaic (Sekai was been like that). Dracu Riot is still fine though, because we can treat it as the fan release even though it's supposed to be leak (Still rough one) and Sekai will release the proper version of Dracu Riot later if they have mood to thaw it later. About the mosaic, to tell the truth it's my least concern in regard of the VN, so I couldn't exactly say much about it. But at least I know that in general Mangagamer release didn't have problem in regard of that because their release didn't have mosaic, while Sekai did have some problem. Oh and by the way both of Fureraba and Sanoba were uncensored if you consider to buy those two later.

It's not my upmost concern but I don't feel good supporting companies that openly showoff their ancient ideals. Won't get Saku Saku because I of what I was told about it. That's why I follow MG more because most of their games are not censored. I have read Fureraba and am planning to read Sanoba, while it does have mosaic, it was advertised as "Nothing was drawn underneath" so it was completely understandable for me. Not that way when they say "We have them but we won't let them be released because we are afraid of genitals." Like I said supporting a company that who openly follows ancient rhetoric just doesn't sit well with me. MG usually won't translate unless it's mosaic free, exception with Midori games of course because that's their parent company. Also have a hunch that Dracu-Riot wouldnt be mosaic free either way as it's tone works and they didn't have the demosaics of Sanoba Witch.

Sorry for my wrong statement in regard of Sanoba here, because turned out that Sanoba here is have mosaic censor. As for Dracu Riot, yeah I would assume that Sekai probably wouldn't do much to demosaic it if they managed to thaw it (Same goes with Senren Banka), seeing that even Nekonyan here didn't managed to have Sanoba free of mosaic. As for tone work's VNs, well both of HatsuKoi and Hoshiori were fan translated so you can still try those two later.

Yeah once HoshiOri is finished I'll probably read it. Oh and it's no problem about Sanoba, I knew already it was censored. I wished there were more fan redrawers out there. Only one I have ever seen was the one that fan-demosaic'd the entirety of Majikoi, and it looked like it was officially done.

I honestly think Hatsukoi protagonist was one of the most real protagonists i've read. I can't pinpoint exactly what i mean, but outside quite a few VERY stupid moments, he was pretty damn tolerable. He is donkan to nth degree, but he's doesn't read like some super generic protagonist.

Good point. We may facepalm at some of his actions, but they aren't pulled completely out of nowhere - he has some character of his own, and even his stupid actions have some cause.

And now you know why many of these companies are uneasy about allowing unmosaic'ed releases.  They are worried about legal exposure from Japanese people buying the US release, then patching in Japanese text.  In Japan, that may or may not be enough to get them in trouble.

H-OVA releases dried up because the places to sell said DVD's dried up (or so I recall hearing) but also because Japanese customers figured out that overseas releases were half the price and uncensored.  That happens too.
