Why is it so common for VNs to have horizontal boxes?

I've been looking at pics of VN collections recently and noticed this is quite common. The below posts show several examples:

Living in Japan, most everything I buy is naturally Japanese.

However I figured tonight's purchase was worth mention.

So, I decided to go and buy my first ever physical copy of VN.

What I planned on buying tonight:

Dies Irae or ChuSingra 46+1

What I ended up buying tonight:

So I had to readjust my setup:

It doesn't seem to be limited to Japan-only releases either: Mangagamer seems to follow the convention on occasion as well - the Princess Evangile and ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two Limited Edition box sets both did this:

Any idea why this is done? I imagine it helps the products to stand out on a store shelf, but is there maybe another reason?

Think it has to do with it working quite well when displaying. Personally I think when the boxes are big they look best when they are horizontal. Just think about how screens mainly are 16:9 rather than 1:1 or 9:16 or how people prefere horizontal pictures rather than vertical pictures. As for why smaller boxes usually don't do it, I would assume it has to do with saving space which the people making VN boxes clearly don't care about. As for why western publishers do it I would assume that is just since the artwork for the japanese version is already horizontal and they don't want to change the art.
