Sony New Censorship Of Everything

Sony has recently released a new policy of censoring sexual content in video games and Visual novels alike. Now recent news said, they're censoring many japanese games and visual novels on the platform and developers must plead their question in english for answers despite them being in japan. What is your opinion in the matter? Some claiming pointing out this situation is due their HQ was transferred to California. Do you that could be it, why Sony went full retard?

I think it's more they've gone from no nudity, to any bare skin beneath the neck is unacceptable. They seem to be censoring swimsuits too.

That's actually hilarious.

I'm uneducated in business enterprise, but I find amusing how two big companies, Valve and now Sony, take opposite approaches regarding the same issue in such a short lapse of time.

Hmm, thought adult content like that was always forbidden on playstation.

They censor things even nintendo doesn't censor now, actually it seems nintendo are just way more liberal than them regarding ecchi content at least if it is in an anime style. Nintendo are supposed to be the child friendly don't want anything to corrupt the children kind of people while Sony is supposed to stand up for adult gamers, at least that was my impression, now they seem to have reversed though I think sony is still ok with tons of gore. Someone getting their eyes ripped out or hand blown up is fine though if there is a belly button or 1 layer of clothes instead of 2 then sony seems to freak out.

Sterilizing content for consoles will just push people towards PC.  This segmentation of content targeted at adults vs. a general audience already exists in the Japanese market.  Sucks if you own a console, but for PC gamers this just makes it more likely that the games you want to play will be available on Steam.  Given that PC games are usually cheaper than console games, are more likely to get deep discounts, and don't require investment in fixed-function hardware, that's a net positive.  If Sony wants to shift away from adult gaming, then my response is, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out."

What do you mean Steam saw the light?

They overturned their long-standing position on 18+ material recently and allow it, so a spate of recent VNs have been re-released on steam uncensored now. You have to  enable adult content in your search to find them but yes you can now buy uncensored eroge on steam.

A recently saw in a video how they censored some CG-s from a game. The CG-s only had girls in swimsuit or in bath (steam covering the important parts) and in the censored version they just put big giant beams of light over everything. Half of the CG was covered by light. At that point they should might as well remove the CGs altogether.

Also why do bellybuttons need censoring? I honestly don't understand that.

This'll backfire for sure, if it was a Console vs PC difference the impact wouldn't be that big (fewer people are willing to switch from console to PC than between different consoles) but even Nintendo censores less now so publishers and players have a valid alternative aside from the PC.

I recently caught myself thinking of my next console (only as an addition to the PC) being a Nintendo one instead of a PS because of Censorship, it still sounds wierd just saying/writing that.

Glad I don't own PS4, I'll just wait when devs decide to release theirs game on Steam and I'll gladly (if I like the game) buy it.

Problem is that some games are ported to PC from ps4 and so keeping the censorship intact too.

I've bought tons of PS4 and vita games in the last couple years, but after this all started, I'm done. This pisses me off so bad. When there's so many games stranded on their platforms nothing good can come of this. Maybe I'll buy new Utawarerumono games or something used, but I'll be doing my best to see Sony gets nothing from me.

Nintendo only censor their own games. Like Fire Emblem IF on 3ds and WiiU, Xenoblade (X and 2) and etc. Censore for 3rd party games are chosen by publisher and rating system. That why its okay to keep game like Senran Kagura 1-2 and Reflexions uncensored.

I don't understand why Sony can't make same approach (while its okay to show how queer licking each others, though...). But instead they forcing censor on everyone. Thats completely retarded.

Anyway, I'll stick with Switch. All these anime games has bad enough graphics to look the same as if it was on PS4. After all this shit I'm sure devs would be more approachable to Switch instead PS4.

Well if the censorship managed to doubled the price for PS4, then I would be very worried about that. But since the price was still the same and I didn't have any plan to buy PS4 anyway, the news was more or less not interesting to me. It's not new though that Sony did censored explicit contents, although for them to censored the content outside explicit sexual contents then it's defnitely a new one. If anything, I just hope that Leaf will move to Steam now that Sony started to censor their releases, although Leaf would likely try to compromise anyway.

I will repost what I posted of reddit and got completely voted down.

All VNs can be divided into 3 groups:

  1. 0 h-content VNs like Steins or Umineko
  2. just a little bit extra to the story - basically majority of what we read here: Fate, Muramasa, Baldr, Silverio, Dies Irae etc.
  3. full h-VNs - the group I dislike the most and find useless, but hey that is my opinion. Basically everything without any story, but pure h-scenes focus here (99% of VNs).

Ok, so first group shouldn't have any problems. Second group can be easily dealt with. We have many examples here. The problem is with the 3rd group. Those games are bought for the purpose of porn. What is the point of buying censored porn? If we talk about that white light censorship that is usually used, wouldn't it mean that customer would buy a game that is majority of time simply a white screen? It would make 3rd group worthless.

Another problem is what type of content is censored. If h-content is censored, shouldn't all games with a lot of killing be censored as well? That would make the majority of the market. If they are not censored, then we need to ask a question why sex is worse than massacre.
