Reading VNS with Reading Disability

Hello,

I really enjoy visual novels and read my first one DRAMAtical Murder about a year ago, it took me about two and half months to complete it because I have a reading disability where I have to read something five or six times to comprehended it and its easy for me to forget things. I wanna read other visual novels like Fruits Of Grisaia and FSN but I'm worried that they would be hard due to the length and that they would take me forever to read and hard to remember events I read before, any tips to help?

Well, that's something I'm definitely not qualified to answer, and you'd be better off having a specialist give you counseling. But, I guess any advice I could give you won't do you any harm either, so...

You could try keeping a VN diary where you write down the general idea and the most important points you've read during that day. Since it's something you wrote it's probably gonna be easier to read (maybe?) and will act as a trigger to help you remember everything else.

Hey there!

I'm definitely not the best person out there to answer that, as I don't have the same problem as you, but I do relate with your reading time. In my case, I'm a pretty slow reader (and my speed goes even further slower when I'm reading something that's not in my native language, that's 100% of the time when it comes to VN) and since I'm quite busy irl lately, I can afford maybe one hour each day to read. I finished DMMD in the beginning of the year and it certainly took me a bit more than a month to finish.

But I don't think that should make you unmotivated! :sachi: It took me several months to finish my favorite VN and it was very worth the ride, long as it was. Take the time you need and try to think in tackling these VNs one route at a time, for example. The goal will feel a lot closer that way. FSN can be quite infodump and long winded at times, but it does a decent job at making you remember stuff with short (okay, some not that short) explanations from one route to the other. Plus, it have a "status screen" that list a lot of character's powers that can be accessed at any time in case you forget something.

And you can also take notes. Like, every time a scene ends, or you stop reading for the day, try to write down/type in a notepad file (create it inside your VN folder) what happened with a single or a few sentences. You can oversimplify the events, pick the most vital part and putting it in all caps, crack a few jokes in your explanations, anything that you think it can be fun to do and easy to associate with the whole scene, so it can "trigger" your memory of the rest of scene without you having to read it again.

If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed to start a very long VN, you can always try a shorter one first until you're confident enough with a method to help you remember the story.

Sorry for the wall of text and best of luck!~

My advice would be to read something rather short and that really really interest you, there are some very good vns out there that dont last more than 1-2 hours, like https://vndb.org/v18736 https://vndb.org/v9986

It's about the same length as the first Grisaia, I believe.

Grisaia is shorter than fate for sure, fate took me like 100 hours to 100% complete it while grisaia probably took me 50-60 (I do listen to every dialogue in the game without skipping any line, so take that into account)

It took me about 100 hours for both of them (I also used to never skip any voiced lines, though it's not really true anymore). On the other hand, I recall that I was a lot more distracted reading Grisaia, so it could be that.

To OP: in my opinion, it's better to try reading them yourself and see how it goes. Technically, it should be okay if you don't overwork yourself, but you should continue to read them consistently. I'm a pretty slow reader myself, and I like to reread some parts of the story if I feel like I didn't understood some part of the story very well, and I can confirm that reading VNs slowly still works. Not always though: some drama-based stories work best if you finish them quickly, because otherwise the effect will be lost. More story-based VNs should work fine if you keep writing things that already happened, as people above suggested. I'm actually not sure about comedies. They generally don't require remembering earlier parts of the story and tend to be pretty episodic, but, on the other hand, if you don't instantly understand the line you've read, the comedic effect may be lost.

So, the bottom-line: try reading them yourself, see how it goes.

You can also try some VNs with the Normal Scene Recollection tag so you can revisit important scenes whenever you need them. Or maybe you can go to a walkthrough video on youtube so you can quickly review what you already saw last time you played.

This one may be a bit more complicated, but if you have someone who knows the VN you want to play or are willing to play the same VNs as you and keep with your pace, you and this person can talk about the events you read so the information keeps fresh in your mind.

I never considered myself a fast reader, so I'm a bit shocked with that since Fate took me about 60 hours to read it.

thank you for all your advice, i been reading FSN and been taking little notes here and there on my Notepad and its deftianly helping with refreshing my brain as well as looking up walkthoughs if needed (I dont have really good/fast wifi) it usually taking me two days to finish one day in game (when i have time between college and work) since i can usually only read for 45-65 minutes before my comphension gets null

Since the OP problem here was already solved here, I just want to say that actually you didn't need to use internet in order to read the walkthrough because you could just copy and paste the walkthrough into Word or Notepad, and from there you can read the walkthrough offline. As for the problem, well I understand that some people could be overwhelmed if they read the VNs for hours straight, so take a break occasionally here is always the good advice. As for reading disability, well I think I didn't have that kind of problem although my problem in regard of VN was always time constraint though and that I need to be aware of the surrounding. Have fun with Fate Stay Night there.
