You're being way too optimistic. Steam may have added a checkbox on the consumer side, but that doesn't mean anything until they actually publish a policy so developers and publishers can know what's allowed and what's not allowed (they haven't done this), and actually start applying said policy (they also aren't doing this). This isn't done until we start seeing the games we expect there getting published back to the platform. Maidens of St. Michael will probably be a good bellwether, since you can bet MG wants to get it back on there ASAP and is just waiting on Steam. If you see it on Steam, maybe there's some progress. If not, then everybody's almost certainly still stuck in this same crappy situation we've been in for the past half a year or so.

Actually, this just happened. Seems like they really are starting to allow straight up ero on Steam. (This game features actual H-scenes, not just "some lewd", so looks like eroge on Steam is a thing now.)

Melty's Quest does indeed contain a lot of fetishistic stuff. It's among the most hardcore stuff I've played (even if I skipped most of it). If this is allowed, I'd say just about all normal Japanese VNs should be allowed in, so long as they aren't nukige or trying to be messed up. And even those might be allowed depending on the content and the actual standards Valve are following, if any.

At least, that's what currently seems to be the case. There is not particular guarantee they'll keep to this, but I'm an optimist. I'd like to think this will usher in a whole new side to Steam.

Well I for one see this as a step in the right direction and I'm happy about it. It made no sense their apprehension towards sexual content while violence runs amok. Make love, not war :leecher:

Plus this also means that maybe we won't have to worry anymore about other content being toned down unnecessarily, such as in Kono Oozora's case and shit like that. Hopefully.

To be honest, I can't help but worry that this is going to open some Pandora's box at some point. Well, unless Steam change their mind a week later, we're fine so far, I guess.

What do you mean? As a company, allowing VNs with adult content, considering they are for better or worse the majority of them, is hardly a bad business decision. They were missing on a ton of very popular VNs, and even if they offered a censored version many people would get their copy from another site just because censorship IS annoying, even for people like me who don't really care about h-scenes that much.

I'm also a born pessimist myself but I fail to see any negative impact on the VN enterprise in the west. If anything, this should make for great profit, which translates in more advertising and VNs becoming more popular.

PPS. I wonder if Steam are going to allow outright nukige, btw.

Hmm probably not, if it's too obvious it's straight up a nukige, which makes sense, in the same way porno movies are not shown in a conventional movie theater. Some games might be kind of in the gray zone though, where they have a solid plot but also a huge number of h-scenes. I don't know how they'd deal with those.

Very nice to see that there's now a legal way for VN's with ero content to be sold on Steam. I hope this will now make an end to the ridiculous H-patches for cheating ero content into all ages VN's.

I'm also curious how PayPal will react to Steam's open adult philosophy now. Will they allow adult VN's to be bought via PayPal, or will they try to block it? Steam is a heavy weight client, so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd just turn a blind eye to it.

Overall, yeah. Basically, I wanted to say, in an extreme situation that somebody decides to put Euphoria-like VN on Steam and it causes some mass freakout, the result could be pretty unpredictable, but, I guess, the possibility of that is very low.

I'm also a bit concerned with a certain other detail. Technically, most 18+ VNs are set in high-schools, so the characters are supposed to be underage, even if they look like adults or it's explicitly said otherwise, so technically the whole VN industry lies in a somewhat legally gray area, especially in more conservative countries. Actually, in my country hentai is illegal for exactly the same reason, and quite a lot of sites that give access to it are IP-blocked. VNs probably exist because the industry is so small that nobody even knows about them, so the more exposure they get, the bigger is the possibility that they are going to be noticed by those who shouldn't notice them. :makina: So, in the end, I'm mostly just worried that I'm personally going to lose access to getting VNs legally rather that that it's going to bring some major problems.

Or maybe I'm just paranoid.

Oh that's actually a very fair point... It's really stupid, because stating that a depiction of an illegal sexual relationship is a crime is equivalent to saying that a depiction of a murder should be illegal. Then let's ban pretty much every video game ever. There are far more concerning topics that should be addressed instead of persecuting fiction... but yeah, we unfortunately live in a very absurd world, otherwise we wouldn't even be talking about this.

Damn, now you actually got me concerned as well.

The same thing happens in very ecchi or borderline hentai anime shows but I can't recall any of them being banned anywhere.

Dunno, perhaps I've grown cynical as I age - but I can see this backfiring in a rather painful and impactful fashion. I don't think any of us really needed or wanted 18+ on Steam.

Though, on one hand - it would be a large boost in sales for publishers, having that extra coverage on such a well known platform (not to mention it might help bypass the bullshit MG etc have tradionally gone through with payment processors).

But, this might be abit too much exposure - and no amount of age-gating on Steam will satisfy those with torches and pitchforks. All they'll need to do is exaggerate abit here - outright lie there, and the hyperbole will spur an ignorant mass media to jump in on the witch hunts~

Yeah, I might already have to walk back my earlier statements. Steam has been talking about this for ages, but at least it seems like maybe they're giving this a chance now. We'll have to see how it goes. I'd still be very wary if I were an eroge publisher, just because tying their livelihood to Steam has proven risky in the past, but at least there's a chance things work out now.

That said, I'm wondering whether the new way things work will actually make Steam a viable storefront for eroge publishers. The settings to enable seeing this content are off by default and pretty difficult to find, and if you don't have those settings enabled, Steam literally gives you a "that doesn't exist" page, not like an "are you sure you want to see this content" page, as far as I understand. The main value for publishers being on Steam is the big exposure and the chance to grow the market, but I don't know if they get that with the way this content filtering is implemented.

I agree with the option being hidden God-knows-where, but if I remember well searches and clicking links to 18+ games give proper feedback ("we've hidden an n-number of games because of your search preferences"). There will be a significant transition period, but I'd expect A LOT of people having 18+ content turned on after its over.

Plus, it seems that all-ages + patch might still be a viable option, circumventing the "adult-only" categorization, but letting you place the 18+ patch as DLC directly on the platform. Less porn-centric VNs could still benefit from the full potential of Steam exposure, while the adult content DLC would be free to download for everyone interested without the current kind of cryptic BS.

I don't think this will last long in that state.

Is there really something wrong with this description? It's both pretty hilarious and very informative. Unless Valve suddenly gets scared of fetish content (I mean, it's nothing THAT BAD in this case), this is exactly how it should work. Gives you a clear indication of what the game is about and if you're grossed out, you go back. *shrug*

De-censor things like Libra of the Vampire Princess, and I can finally think about paying for them... past the terrible TL, that is.

There was always a patch for Libra, at least. Plus, to be fair to MiKandi, they're still working on sorting this mess out - I think common route +  Mari's route retranslation will be implemented in a few weeks. :> But yeah, it's definitely one of those games that today would get on Steam without an all-ages version.

I wanted to make a broader comment, I'd really like for MoeNovel to drop their stance and adapt to this new policy, but it's MoeNovel after all. I really want my full IMHHW.

About Libra, I think that the patch wasn't accessible to everyone, which was pretty stupid to be honest.
