What are the things that you hate the most in VNs?

Most archetypes (modern tsundere and loli especially), terrible and predictable writing and story direction, unimaginative cg's which could just as well have been taken out from other vn's, utterly useless protagonists without a real personality, school setting......, too long common routes, protagonist acts like an asexual throughout the common route before he bursts out (i love you > kiss > sex) within the span of five minutes somewhere in the heroine route

There are probably quite a few more which i can't think of atm.

The average/idiot/lazy protagonist

The harem protagonist with no qualities beyond being 'nice'

Hetare protagonists

Ladder-style choice and story structure (ex. G-senjou no Maou, Aiyoku no Eustia)

Osananajimi heroines

Failure to utilize setting to enhance the story/heroine paths

Epilogues that end two weeks or a month after the events of the path in question.

School settings (sorry, I'm just tired of this)

Edit: Forgot this one... but protagonists that are immensely capable in the common route but become almost incompetent in the heroine routes.

"fag-shenanigans"

What I mean by that, are homosexual characters which can't stop talking about how much gay they are and how desperate they are for more gay in every single scene they are in. (I actually say this both about the male side kick who keeps hitting on the protagonist, as well as the token lesbian girl who keeps groping all the heroines in the inevitable hot spring CG).

What I like about Japanese writing is that they generally don't give any fucks whatsoever about social justice pandering or filling demographics for outraged twitter people. When the japs decide to write a gay character it's either an authentic, almost real person or a completely offensive stereotype. The latter of which not doing much for me.

I mean, sure, I also "hate" dense main characters for plot convenience, poor and out of the blue h-scenes... like everyone else, but hate is too strong a word. I just find that slightly annoying, but it doesn't ruin a story for me.

If I had to tell something that in my opinion is capable of ruining a potentially good story, that would be hypocritical moral righteousness. What do I mean by that? Well, surely you have seen a lot of stories sabotaged by it, since it affects most of all the content we receive from Hollywood. It consists in ignoring all and every piece of logic in both plot and character personality as it was portrayed to that point to alter a result that, the writer consider, would be too "outrageous" for the public to accept. Because you know, the most important aspect of a story is its educational value and its capacity to not offend anybody :leecher:

Fortunately this doesn't happen too often in japanese media compared to american media, which is one of the main reasons I consume more of the former. It still happens though, and when it does and the story had potential, it pisses the fuck out of me.

Ohh japan seem to try to educate the youth. Presenting drinks to the protag (regardless of era) where the protagonist declines because hes a minor, male protagonists these days are almost exclusively too good to be true, never hits or kills girls, even if shes a super villain who has mass murdered people or is about to murder the protagonists friends.

Im sure there are a lot more examples.

Lazy fight scenes. Honestly I wish more VNs would just use a manga-esque style for fight scenes. Funnily enough Cartagra does the "manga-style fight scenes" (I haven't read KNS 1 or 2 yet, maybe they do too), and it looks great. Of course, this demands more on the part of the artist(s). More broadly, I guess I'm asking for more artistic effort when it comes to these scenes, in whatever way it can be done.

The "lazy" type I'm talking about are where CGs are reused, and the fights involve text and "colored slashes" on the screen, plus sound effects.  This is the style in a lot of the highly rated VNs.  It even includes some very action-scene oriented VNs where you'd expect there to be more artistic emphasis on the action. This problem might be because of budget issues.

Yeah, but that is different. If the character is presented that way from the beggining, no matter how unrealistic, all I said in my post doesn't apply.

I for one love male characters that are too good to be true, bless 2D to make them real, more of them please wwwwwwww

Well, on topic now. What ruins characters for me is when they never grow beyond their only trait (like a tsundere that being a tsundere is her entire personality).

What ruins the plot I think it's fake black and white morality. The heroes does a lot of questionable things and no one bats an eye. Worse yet, everyone sides with them like they were pure untainted saints. Meanwhile, the villains are treated as scum of the earth that always have bad intentions and then they give us a flashback just to show us they were always soooooo evil, mwahahaha! It's not thaaaaaat common a thing, but when this does happens it pisses me off.

I hate high schools.

I hate school representatives.

I hate the archetypal glasses girl.

I hate childhood friends.

I hate promises made to childhood friends.

I hate boring ass, dumbass, protagonists.

I hate the shitty best friend character whose only reason for existing is to make the boring ass, dumbass, protagonist look better by comparison.

I hate shitty writing in the sex scenes.

I hate how every single heroine is a virgin with no sexual experience whatsoever.

I hate annoying sister/not my sister characters who won't just fuck off!

I hate any character who talks in third person. May they be impaled by rusty spikes.

I hate characters who have some unspecified malady that makes them weak all the time and then die suddenly.

I hate neo tsunderes.

I hate how most women in the sex scenes hardly seem to be enjoying themselves at all?

I hate pointless misunderstandings.

I hate when two characters decide to just ignore each other instead of having an actual fucking discussion.

I hate characters who interrupt two other characters important conversation mid sentence.

I hate how they treat the interruption as a cue for the conversation being over even though they can totally still talk. Finish what you were fucking saying!

I hate the complete lack of knowledge about how birth control works.

I hate when two characters announce that they will love each other forever, even though they are still only in high school and they've only actually started dating.

I hate negativity.

Lazy storytelling techniques and the abundance of cliches that repeat themselves almost in every single VN. Like, why exactly do we have to set almost every single VN in a high-school? :rimu:

The whole eroge-centeredness is also starting to get on my nerves. For some reason, even all-ages VNs usually have the same eroge-like structure where you assume the role of a male protagonist surrounded by a company of cute girls, and the goal is to start relationship with one of them. I guess, it mostly exists for fan-service reasons, though I'd love if we had an increase in the amount of VNs with actually extensive choice systems that would do things more creatively.

What I hate most is text. Not all text, but rather text, which can be removed or rewritten to be less than 1/4 of the length without losing any contents or storyline. This is particularly true for H scenes, but all age scenes often does this as well. I don't mind long VNs if they have contents to justify the length. Getting the feeling somebody missed a line quota in a scene and then quickly fixed with no contents is not a nice reading experience.

Sensitively written love stories and characters that instantly turn into the protagonist with superhuman physiology that torments the heroine during H scenes and... well actually just about everything in the H scene that is in complete contrast to the rest of the story and character development. Considering how much I love H scenes, it's sad how rarely it blends in with the story and characters.

Well, most of the time H scenes are jarring. To enjoy them, you have to find ones that appeal to you (or are you against any and all forms of porn?), and they have to be well integrated within the game.

I enjoyed "Eroge" from Clockup somewhat, because I knew what I was getting into. It can be considered a nukige. Still, it's like fast food entertainment. VNs can do much better.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • Protagonist's personality in most VN's is disgusting, they are like lobotomized robots
  • slice of life or should i say meaningless conversations / activities in large amounts that only try to bring more length to VN without any plot or character building
  • school setting, especially with drama over nothing like in princess evangile. It's just overused and boring theme if protagonist is a student (teacher protagonists only appear in nukige for some reason)
  • VN with only stereotypical characters (monkey boy, tsundere,...)
  • bad h-scenes compared to other scenes (really, in those cases they are just boring and should be omitted from the game but never by translator, only the developer)
