Is this forum dead?

Reddit is inactive compared to what it was like in the past, /jp/ isn't what it used to be wrt visual novels, /vn/ over on /vg/ is all spam, the MG forum is dead, JAST is fairly inactive (last I checked), eroge forums are inactive, so I'm wondering the same thing. Compared with which similar forums? : S

I was told a long time ago that the community was built around IRC, and now it appears similarly discord. Everybody's on discord so ...

And also I don't think the forums are dead.

Yes, it is. The staff ostensibly don't have time to either participate in things themselves or allow new things to happen / people to do something, from what I've gathered. I'd comment on moderation, but we're not allowed to. Quality discussion, as you may have seen, is quite rare, and we are limited to 5000 recommendation or CoC meme threads. This place is the last vestige of Fuwanovel, with only enough strength to barely put its ugly, sacrilegious visage above the surface to take gasping, ragged breaths before it is finally put out of its misery and sinks to the abyss.

On the bright side, however, it is full of quality people from a variety of backgrounds. There is still a chance that among them stands a hero that will arrive and pull this sinking relic from the water and deliver it to salvation...

Quality discussion has always been quite rare.

It's very simple. If you want more discussion on the forums, then feel free to generate that discussion.

It is still far more active currently than the current fuwanovel though

This is a good summary of the current fuwa (although I don't completely agree with it):

This isn't true - not only because torrent usage was never in any way correlated to participation in the forums, dropping torrents was vital to Fuwa's survival. It just wouldn't exist anymore if it still had torrents.

I would personally disagree with this, but with important caveats.

As you may remember, we moved domains and servers a while ago. The decision to not go with a host which would allow torrents was understandable - hosts that allow for such dangerous content to be posted are likely going to be both more expensive and more difficult to work with. It would also likely be less stable, as a less legit outfit is more likely to fold. It also went against Tay's personal preferences, and furthermore there may have been legal troubles for our admin (which is pretty serious! He's this busy and we still don't have a replacement!). But you could argue the other way around: it probably was possible to maintain the torrents somehow if the leadership really wanted it. A certain site containing an index of previous Fuwanovel torrents has been online for years by now, anime-sharing doesn't seem like it's dying anytime soon, et cetera. On balance it is quite possible that dropping the torrents was the right choice, but I am not sure if I agree that it was absolutely required.

That said, I totally agree that conversion from torrenter to poster might not have been huge. And going legit certainly opened up opportunities we didn't have a while back. VNs have also gotten significantly more mainstream, though obviously still a niche, in recent years - just look at all of the VNs on Steam. This means that the illegal distribution to hook people in argument is getting weaker (though it's hardly dead).

That may be true, but I think torrents were a pretty big draw to the site in general. They're how I found fuwa, at least.

Quality discussion requires a topic worth discussing.  Allow me to assist: the developers of Huniepop and other VN devs on Steam have just been served a notice from Valve that their games will be removed in 2 weeks.  Is this the beginning of the end for VNs in the West, or the end of the beginning?  Ready, set, go!

Sounds like a pretty big event. In fact it would be so big that it deserves a thread of its own. What happens if you purchased a game on steam and then the game is removed? Will the game stay on the VN and remain playable? It's a valid concern considering Amazon pulled a book from their store and whoever bought it has it removed the next time they connected. I suspect quite a number of people are or should be interested in this potential issue.

Another obvious question is: do you have a source for this?

If VNs are suddenly banned on steam, then will it result in better quality? It seems right now the goal is to mass produce translations of questionable quality and get them on steam.

Last, but not least: I'm sure VNs will still be able to serve us with steamy hot porn.

TF? Shouldn't you create a new thread for this topic?

No, Fuwa is not dead, it is simply old.  I've seen dead communities, and no one asks if the community is dead there.  They just desperately post dozens of times to try to fool themselves into thinking the community is still active when the max number of members online at any given time in the past year was three.

On a honest note I don't think this forum is dead at all. There is still a relatively consistent stream of new members joining (whether they bother to contribute is another story) Still the fact that they are joining is a positive thing. Oh another thing I think the reason why it's been real dead on here is it is almost the end of the semester for most schools and universities so I think people have less time to post and be active. I've been on plenty of dead or dying forums before and I don't think this is one of them.

But if it is dying then all you need to do is just clone me a couple of times. Then I will be able to keep this forum going for a long time with the strength of my multiple personalities. I assure you that doing so will not lead to any negative repercussions. You can trust me, would I ever lie to you?

You can? I mean, there are forums where people simply don't post anymore, and they are still online. Like, there's literally one new post every few months or so. Fuwa is definitely far from that, lol.

I do hope you are ready to accept your punishment. Are you ready to hunker down in the corner and beg for mercy? Have you pissed your pants? Prayed to God?
