What do you think defines an experienced VN reader?

Can read and understand japanese, for non-jp speaking there is simply lack of VNs to read.

Is that really still true? I have a list of like 30 plotge VNs to read, and they're all translated.

Hey, maybe this is an answer to OP's question.  An experienced VN reader is someone who has read enough VNs to complain about the lack of translated VNs :sachi:

But come on, I don't think there are many ways to interpret what an experienced person means. An experienced reader is someone who has read a lot. Of course there is no clear threshold, mainly because you are always experienced in comparison with another person. It's a matter of proportionality.

Pretty much, there are certain things you can never forget :chaika: having read a lot does contribute

Not quite as accurate as you'd originally think, sure for those who read Jp there'll be more to read for sure but there's quite a lot to read for non-jp users as well.

Not to mention, just because someone has access to more VNs, doesn't mean they actually read more than people who has access to less. While I can read Japanese, I'm certain there are many English only VN readers who have read many more VNs than myself.

I'd consider myself an intermediate VN reader at the moment. I know I have read over 100, though I do not have an accurate count. I do try to go through at least one or two VNs a month, depending on their length, and have kept that up pretty much since I started. Idk what it would take to be labeled an "experienced" reader, tbh. You'd have to have read more than me, at least. :P

dont worry, dorg. :kosame: ill still kind of tolerate you for it! :sacchan:

but honestly, i was thinking about it and i guess my definition would be someone whos read all kinds of different vns in different forms. gameplay ones, originally in english ones. i dont really see reading in japanese as a huge component. while it is a nice feat to have, there still a small amount of types of vns that havent been tled and that number is growing smaller and smaller. they just happen to read something that isnt tled but that doesnt mean that type of vn hasnt ever been tled, if that makes sense. like a nukige is gonna be a nukige in any language. we get the gist of it. plot is there for porn. if you read only tled vns you can still see troupes and cliches in untled ones.

I think everyone is over thinking it. What do people say as experienced as other mediums? like Film or books? Just need to be at it for a while. When you start comparing this VN with another you can probably be counted in the experienced group.

Ignoring Nukiges, the average casual VN reader may not have read as much as most people on these forums.

I usually play/read Visual Novels and Eroges alike whenever I got sick and tired of playing mainstream video games or other PC games to experience something different and unique :mare:

However my situation is little bit of an issue and I seldom read VNs nowadays due to school and work and other bullshit that I have to deal with :makina:

I'm just too busy trying to become rich so that I could buy all the VNs in the world:wahaha:

On topic: Anyone expecting an objective answer from the subject topic will be sorely disappointed as it's subjective and a bit arbitrary.

Personal opinion, an experienced VN reader should be had read at least an above median amount of VNs from at least half of the known VN genres (I think expecting a 'experienced reader' you classified to automatically had read BL or corruption is a bit, how to say, unfair? These may not be to the that reader's tastes) and from a wide range of companies. Also, my definition of:

Above median amount - Above 50. No real reason for this number. Just my personal gut feeling.

Wide range of companies - At least 10 and above so as to have vastly diversified experiences. Small amount when compared to the large number of VN producing companies, I know, but I feel it's an reasonable number when compared to the number of mainstream titles available (in japan or otherwise)

In this sense, @wei123 can be considered a experienced VN reader imho

Looks like this thread goes on and on, yet we are no closer to an answer. Or to be more accurate, it seems that the answer depends on who you ask and as such there are plenty of answers. I have come to the conclusion that I don't care. It's up to you if you want to read VNs or not and that's none of my business. I do consider myself fairly experienced as I have read a number of VNs and having touched multiple genres, I have figured out what I want to read and to what I will say "never again". I'm not the one who has read the most titles and the time between starting on a new title is longer than a number of people here, meaning I will never be in the elite regarding numbers of VNs read. So what? I know enough to post stuff here and enjoy VNs. One reason I tend to take quite a while on finishing VNs is because I tend to spend more time on translation projects than actually reading VNs I have nothing to do with. Will that make me less experienced or more experienced regarding VNs? Probably both and once again it comes down to how to define experience.

What I do care about is if people are able to write proper reviews. This is way too complex to put into a formula and it will come down to a subjective observation of each reviewer.

You become an experienced reader when you start reading things that aren't in VNDB and you can barely find info about your favorite VN using the romanization of the title on Google.

Wow, now that's a power ceiling.

I'd say when you get really jaded with them and quit the scene for a number of years, only to come back like you never left.

So, you literally must go though a character arc i.e Hero's Journey.

For me, I think you can look at someone like @Kaguya who is rumored to achieved enlightenment though playing so many porn games within a method described in a sacred manuscript called SubaHibi (that sounds really buddhist, doesn't it?)

As for the experienced VN reader definition to me, I think someone would be experienced if he was vlogging his playthrough of he play the VN while also showing himself cosplaying his favorite heroine XDDD. For example let's just say Bob (Sorry if some user real name here is Bob beforehand) is like Sanoba very much, so he decided to stream his playthrough in Youtube and coincidentally his favorite heroine is Nene, therefore Bob decided to cosplay Nene's witch mode to show how passionate his love to Nene was XDDDDDDD.

My brain bleaching lame joke aside, I think it's depend on each people what experienced VN player is. While I think some post here had some merit to think of, in the end what I can say is that as long as you'll able to understand any VN that you read then you can call yourself an experienced VN reader. Or maybe a people who can keep calm whenever some of their favorite VN is criticize because he already form his own strong opinion, so he wouldn't be swayed easily by the negative opinion ie the person is love his favorite VN enough. As for me, unfortunately right now I'm still easily influenced by the score (Otherwise I may have be able to comment on Libra here which right now the average VNDB score for that was at 6.63) so unfortunately I couldn't call myself experienced VN reader here.
