Sex ed banned in Japanese schools

Pretty much as the title says. Japan has a problem with rising number of STDs and teenage pregnancies, yet when a school in Tokyo started to teach about it, the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education banned the school from talking about intercourse, birth control or abortion. Apparently the young minds are too immature to know about such an obscene topic even if they have reached the age of concent. In 2015 and 2016, 2098 high school students got pregnant and 674 dropped out. According to the schools only 32 was asked to do so, the rest made the choice themselves. Apparently they are fine with the girls dropping out because they did violate the rule about students not being allowed to become pregnant. Those who drop out tend to come from poor families and having ruined their education, they likely ruined their future as well.

We all know about the silly censorship laws, but this is just beyond stupid. They complain about low pregnancy levels, but at the same time they refuse to teach the next generation how to control if and when to get children. At this rate, it's possible that some remain childless because they haven't figured out how on their own. Don't laugh, doctors in America occasionally encounter such people, though it's rare.

It also explains some of the weird made up "facts" in VNs/H anime and H manga. Some of the repeating fake facts are:

- no pregnancy from the first time. The body doesn't care about history

- no pregnancy before first period. Some girls have a number of ovulations prior to the first visible period. All girls have at least one

- no pregnancy from anal. Apparently those swimmers are such good aimers that they can fall out and enter the other hole

- safe days. Sex can trigger spontaneous ovulation regardless of cycle, particularly if inexperienced (young) or highly unusual settings (like rape)

Fake facts commonly believed even though I'm not sure I have seen them in VNs, yet fits the topic:

- condoms protect against STDs. They do not protect against those transmitted by skin contact

- shaving improve hygiene - it protects against easily treatable STDs while increase the risk of infection and hard/impossible to treat STDs

One fact, which I would like to add here, which to my knowledge is left out everywhere is that during pregnancy, the pelvis will change shape in order to prepare for birth. If it's not fully developed, it has a tendency to be shaped poorly regarding leg movement and the woman will for life be worse at running and possibly even walking. This alone is reason to recommend against pregnancy before the age of 18/20 (around that time). Considering the risk of accidental pregnancy, the age of concent of 18 actually makes sense. Mature people with such knowledge should be able to give it to the next generation. There is no reason why each generation should learn this the hard way.

god, this is all kinds of completely fucked up. like, i dont get their understanding of this. their birthrates are low and their is a higher number of students getting stds? i dont understand this. sure, maybe they wont have sex but then... they wont have sex. you kind of need to do that to create offspring. also, never realy thought about how harmful the teachings in h-manga can be with pregnancy or any h medium really. i just saw it as like just indulging in another fantasy, like a girl wanting to have sex. we all know those dont exist. :miyako:

but yeah, this just seems like nothing but bad news.

The Southern US is just as bad, if you pay attention... it is all about abstinence...

absolutely true. pretty dumb. in fact, i think here in utah they passed some form saying you cant teach sex ed in schools. so some porn youtube channel (they dont do porn, theyre just run by like pornhub and support it) stepped in letting people know that theyll teach this stuff. i dont fucking understand how these people come to the conclusion that education people on a subject that natural is a bad idea.

Japan and sex education is a lot like the US and the oil industry... both are incapable of having appropriate/healthy relationships with one another and telling the truth isn't considered a virtue.

Japan wasn't originally this bad... but the West has been this way since the early nineteenth century.

I would point towards 1945. With Americans in charge, they wrote a new constitution and told parliament to pass a bunch of laws. One of them was banning public baths, including onsen from having both genders in the same room. According to the Americans, if men and women are naked together, it's sex. The Japanese at the time didn't really understand it, but passed the law anyway. They did however make it only apply to baths opening after the law passed, meaning the old ones can still mix genders if they like. At the time back in Europe, people still didn't have bathing suits, meaning it was common to undress on the beach and go into the water naked. The idea about hiding the body is a very American thing.

If you ask me, it reeks of Hypocrisy when you consider that their general relaxed attitude towards this topic (you can buy AV off vending machines for goodness's sake). Seems to be the same as the US, where porn is readily available online, but revealing private parts / sex is heavily frowned upon and automatically gets you slapped with a AO rating (as far as I understand).....

Reminds me of how the Catholic school board (we have a “public” secular school board and a “separate” Catholic school board which are both funded by taxpayers) reacts whenever a new sex-ed curriculum is brought in here.  They refuse to teach it until the courts force them to because “sexual education is against Catholic values”.

Well many things in Japan don't make sense to be honest. For instance they have long work hours even though too long work hours ends up hurting productivity as the people become less productive as they are tired and start slowing down their work. These long work hours also make it so that maintaining a well functioning family is nearly impossible which is likely why the birthrates are dropping as fast as they are. This means that their long work hours seems to only be destuctive yet they haven't changed it. I generally blame the school system in Japan as they only use multiple choice as tests and rarely or never have to actually think for themselves on the tests or actually write anything of substance. To my understanding the mentality in Japan is pretty much just trust the people in politics and the people who are leaders and never think about it yourself. The people that end up as leaders often aren't that smart either since they have gone through the same bad school system and therefore they end up with laws and norms that are stupid and they never really seem to actively try to fix problems. So what I am saying is that the school system in Japan is creating a general population that aren't politically active or aware and it creates politicians that don't think about things and just do things the way they have been handles so far because it is "the correct way". While the laws and norms can be traced back in history and are due to anti sex/anti porn sentiment I think better school systems would have made it likely that they would have changed it once they saw how problematic the lack of sex ed is.

I'm sure all the sexualized "u-uu-me-pure-virgin-please-exploit" anime girls will provide the Japanese youth with the needed nuanced understanding of mutual respect, consent and sexual maturity.

Along with realistic representation of sex in form of hentai. People say that western porn creates skewed, unrealistic expectations among kids, imagine learning stuff primarily from h-manga or eroge. :michiru:

Just saw the entire article. Seems like the Junior High School wasn't outright banned but merely spoke out against by the Tokyo MOE (correct me if I'm wrong).

Anyway, even if they are banned, it should (hopefully) be limited to this one instance as it's such a obvious rubbish decision...

When the Board of Education recommends not telling the children about "intercourse, birth control or abortion", it is in reality not a recommendation, but an order. They have the power to shut down any school not following their recommendations. Also further down it is revealed that it's not the first time this has happened.

Japanese (teenagers) aren't THAT impressionable imo (at least I hope not), with proof of it being Hentai, AV, and media with 18+ sexual content have been around for a long time and Japan certainty isn't a country of bitches and rapists. Thank god :P

Otherwise, image the horror  :isla:...

I see. Very unfortunate imo........

While I understand the concern you are bringing up, I really don't see sex education (in schools at least) as a solution to avoid pregnancy, STDs, etc. I remember when I had Health Class aka "sex education class" in High School. Me and my friends goofed off the whole time and couldn't take any of it seriously or pay attention.

Some people say this is why "good sex education" is important, but I argue that all sex education is inherently going to be ineffective. The reason me and my friends goofed off is because it is a super awkward subject to talk about and we really didn't want want to engage in it.

I think a much better solution would be to not live in such a degenerate society, but I suppose we are too down that rabbit hole to come out now.

A bit like saying locks are useless because a thief will get through it if he really wants to. At the very least, it is better than doing nothing about it. Also, there are people in every age group (for instance, those who has below avg IQ or those who are naive and impressionable), and in every society and country whom can benefit (greatly) from these kind of things. It's not even taking up a lot of money/resources and time, just a sex-education class. By doing what the Tokyo MOE did, they run the very real risk of depriving these people of the information they (desperately) need, while their primary concerns of banning the sex-ed class, according to the article, is pretty much rubbish to me.

Most people learn what they know about sex from their peers and friends when growing up. Kids talk about this stuff all the time. They learn it from other kids, or their older siblings, and then spread it to their friends. Any kid with a normal social life growing up will first learn about sex in this way. This is also how knowledge has spread about sex for most of human history.

On the contrary, sex education is a very uncomfortable and unnatural way to relay this information, and it often has the opposite effect than what it intends. While I don't know the statistic myself, I would really like to know the percentage of teenage pregnancies that happened where the girl (and guy for that matter) really didn't know that sex leads to babies. Again, I really don't know the answer, but I would be willing to bet that the overwhelming majority were perfectly aware of what they were doing. There is no cure for teenage impulsiveness other than maybe proper discipline. And that is up to the parents.

Absolutely true, but not the point of my post.

I agree with most of what you said and never believed that this kind of class will really turn this situation around.

The point of my post is there is a group of people who can / may greatly benefits from this kind of class, and the resources it takes up is rather small considering the potential benefits it has (at the very least. it will definitely improve the situation, no matter how small). Don't think it's worth it to ban the class just because of their hypocrisy ideals
