Gonna be hard for anyone to top Yuuji in my opinion. Though Okabe might (but I havn't personally played Steins Gate yet).

Shoutout to Aoi from IMHHW, for not being the brooding, borderline anti-social protag most VN protags are (still somewhat dense when it comes to girls though xD).

What? :michiru: Yeah, I love SubaHibi. And I would also like reading another VN where Yuki (or very similar character) would be a protagonist for much longer time. But this VN, obviously, wouldn't be Subahibi, since it would never work with one protagonist. I don't see what's wrong. Well, maybe the way I worded it is a bit misleading.

Oh. I feel like an idiot now.

I wonder if it's any different in japan, as it certainly seems the favourite protagonists are protagonists with a personality. Why on earth do they then produce so much drivel with nonsense protagonists? Sure, i can empathize with the self inserts or pity their utter stupidity, but self inserting in general is something i'll never quite understand.

By the way, somebody knows great yuri or otome protagonists? So far there is only one girl in this poll, and even she shares the choice with a guy. :makina:

Elysia Wentworth and Lily the Stranger from Shiei no Sona-nyl. Two amazing female protagonists in one game! And incidentally probably my favorite protagonists as well.
I'm personally very fond of Elysia's refined and melancholic, somber demeanor.

I really like Mary from Sharnoth too.
...And pretty much every other Steampunk MC as well.

I suppose it's because vn developers assume that vn readers are worthless in real life so in order to make the readers connect to the protagonist, they make the protagonist just as worthless. And sometimes, nonsense protagonists are there for character development. Like they may be dumb and annoying at the start of the vn (Shirou and Takeru ahem) but towards the end of the game, they become a decent person so the reader may feel that they've grown along with the protagonist (though not all actually have that sort of development, of course).

I think the self insertion aspect of it is a big factor. It's the same reason why most protags have no voice acting, and no sprites. People like inserting themselves into these "empty shells", pretending like they are getting all that hot 2D ass.

I know I do. (/ω\) Well, this tends to be the case for moege/ charage/ pure love stories, at least.

But I wonder if it's about making the story more immersive or just making the porn more effective? I've heard that many people insert themselves into live-action porn, so I can imagine it being only more prevalent when it goes to hentai games. Self-insert doesn't work for me in either way, so I'm always curious how others feel about it.

Actually, you know, light novel protagonists are also often portrayed just as empty shells without any real personality, so it probably isn't only because of porn.

Also I think one possible reason for the frequency of bland MC's in VNs could be to leave the path open for multiple choices. If your MC doesn't have a really well defined personality then no choice feels particularly weird.

That I can understand, but I would still want the MC's personality to develop according to the choices you've made up to that point, and while there are very well crafted VNs that actually do this, most just don't bother since it's a lot of work.

Problem is that they never act in a way i would, which is probably why i never understood the self insert thing. They are way too kind, to decent, too asexual, too much of everything that makes a boring personality. I simply can't identify with any of that.

This is actually a really good question. Usually I consider if I like a VN or not and not as much the individual characters. My first thought went to Musumaker, but I realized that's actually not a good candidate. It uses the sane man/crazy man comedy setup once in a while and while it works really well, it has to leave the protagonist as the sane man aka a more average man. He isn't bad, but he is not "the best" either. There are some other good candidates in that title, but none of those are protagonists. It's not that the protagonist has a shallow personality or anything like that. He just intentionally isn't the outstanding favorite character ever. I find this rather interesting as I never thought about this in this way before.

After a lot of thinking, I ended up with Alice from Majo Koi Nikki. She is well written, cute, adorable, curious and funny. The fact that she is presented sort of like a heroine (displayed onscreen and with voice acting) does help her, but she would likely be my favorite even without that.
