Stalled: Umineko. It supposedly gets really really good, but the first episode was just unbelievably boring and the characters by the end annoyed the crap out of me.

Well, the style of the storytelling changes in the second episode, and they throw in a lot more 'fun' elements, but if you didn't like the first episode to the point you had to stall it, then I'm really not sure whether you should continue reading Umineko. Especially if you didn't even like the characters.

By the way, did you read the 'Tea Party' and '???' ? They give a few hints about what a few later episodes are going to become.

Sakaagari Hurricane - I like this novel a lot, enough that I go back and re-read it on occasion, but never once have I managed to play the Yuzu route to the end, for reasons I myself can't explain. I originally had two routes I just couldn't seem to get into, but eventually whittled that down to 1 over the years.

Koichoko - Gotta hate that enforced route order. Still managed to stay long enough to play Michiru route. Eventually did the student council president? route, too, but I'm pretty sure there's 1.... 2? More routes I left undone.

Mono no Aware wa Sai no Koro - The game provided a somewhat interesting setting with potential for interesting conflicts, and made very little actual use of it. Its art also rubbed me the wrong way, and though I'm told there are individual heroine routes after finishing the 3 "generic" routes, I dropped the game a little ways into the third generic route.

Otoboku - I somehow wasn't aware Otoboku 2 was the second game in the series and started with that. I liked Otoboku 2 a lot, so naturally, I went and tried the original. The original was, of course, a far cry from its sequel. I ended up doing one route and calling it quits.

CLANNAD - I had watched the anime and only played the routes for the heroines that interested me.

To Heart - There's just way too many heroines and the monotony of the day-to-day was too much of a pain. Still managed to play through at least 6 Heroine routes.

I did read those and was even fairly entertained by them. As for the characters, I did like them at first, mostly anyways. I just really didn't like the way that they handled the situation, how even the seemingly more intelligent characters became totally incompetent even before shit really hit the fan. It seems like a minor gripe, and I get the personality changes considering the situation they were in, but it all just seemed to come out of nowhere rather than having any sort of actual buildup and I had honestly been expecting better.

Koiken Otome: Found out I should have started with a different route because all other routes spoil the one I should have started with. All motivation to keep reading evaporated.

Noble Works: Kinda just slowed to a halt over time but the real nail in the coffin was was a scene that brings up some traumatic memories for me.

Hate Plus: Overwrote my save files.

EDIT:

Forgot about Euphoria. Read through one ending. Seemed like a very neutral or lesser bad ending. I was at home at the time, where I had to read in the living room at night after everyone else was asleep, cus', y'know, it's Euphoria. I decided that was too stressful and to wait until I got back to school before continuing but never got back into it.

About Koiken Otome, and not trying to convince you to keep going if you really don't want to, any spoilers presented are vague at best, at least I didn't really notice them at any point even after going through the route in question. And it's not really so much a spoiler as it is foreshadowing. Really from what I remember of the VN it's completely fine to read the routes in any order without having to really worry about getting spoiled and having stuff ruined.

Lmao, We have same reason why stop reading it.. ,

And also I have another reason...

The other reason is : unrealistic-idealism phrase shape ....

such as

"If it's with you, I feel can doing everything, Seiichi-kun!"

"Yeah of course, I was your patner after all, Let's fight together until meet our victory ! "

Ughhh... I getting embarrassed with just read it !!

What I like from this game it's just their Menu and System appearance ... It's kinda cool ~

Only thing stalled for the moment is VNs period.  I haven’t got around to reading one in months even though I have a backlog.

As for dropped:

Harukoi Otome - one of the first VNs I bought so I didn’t look into it as much as I should have.  I personally have no interest in loli routes.  The loli routes are needed to unlock most of the normal routes.

Katawa Shoujo - Finished Hanako’s route when it first came out and liked it.  Got partway through Rin’s and stalled for a year.  Forced myself to finish Rin and stalled partway through Emi.  Eventually forced myself to finish Emi and stalled on Shizune.  Two years later tried to force myself to finish Shizune and dropped it for good partway through her route.

Swan Song - tried it years ago.  Got bored.

Gotcha. I've been warming up to the idea of continuing from where I left off for a while, regardless of the severity of the spoilers. I probably will go back to it eventually although it's about fourth in my priority list right now behind Grisaia 1, Dies Irae, and Princess Evangile. I consume vns at a glacial rate though, and I might want to marathon the rest of Grisaia after I finish the first one. It could be a few years before I get back to Koiken Otome lol.

I get where you're coming from, but I live for that embarrassingly cheesy dialogue. At least in regards to romance.

On the flip side though, things like Fate/Stay Night's pseudo-philosophic monologues make me want to quit reading altogether they're so bad.

If I like the first 30 minutes of a VN, I go all the way (meaning: every fucking route) every time before I start another one. That's why I'm cautious on picking up VNs that are famous for being very long lol.
Maybe the only one I've dropped was Nekopara, but I actually have no clue why I started it in the first place. And, if it counts as a VN, Long live the queen because I found it impossible to play without a walkthrough and I don't like that.

Gin'iro Haruka/Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai: Both stalled for the same reason, they both have a very specific feel and you will not always be in the mood for something like that.

Tsujidou-san no Junai Road: There is a heroine other than Ai?

Hatsuru Koto Naki Mirai Yori: Aira's route was wrapped up well enough that I just stopped wanting to play any other routes.

Every Ensemble ojousama-ge/SMEE chara-ge: I'm not interested in the other heroines enough to finish their routes, but maybe someday I will.

Aoi Tori: Kind of hard to read when you know purplesoftware will stab your heart and twist the knife to be sure it hurts.

Sekai de Ichiban Dame na Koi: Its written by Maruto, going to lead to a beautiful train wreck but I chickened out.

Ugh, I outright dropped 'Narcissu', I feel it boring and I'm not for only feels not real story kind of story, I find it just slow and make me feel sleepy, I also dropped 'Hijiwaru my master', only porn and porn and sexual harassment, not entertaining and the protagonist is just dumb, not worthy my time

I'm stalled with 'Griasaia no Kajitsu', I like it but not more than that, sometimes I look at internet to see how far I'm still from a route, I'm still in the common route, I feel so bored that I started Umineko, that was worthy, I love Umineko now. I hope finish it someday

I have a couple of vns stalled at the moment, some of which are stalled simply because of my real life priorities. However, there's 1 vn which I completely dropped (Parascientific Escape) because it tries too hard to be like Zero Escape (the developer didn't even try to fully change the naming convention lol)  and the plot is only mediocre at best (Character development is,of course, non existent).I only started playing it because it was available on 3DS but honestly speaking, I would not touch it ever again, even if my 3DS is collecting dust as I speak.

The ones I have stalled are all visual novels with gameplay in them. Somehow the format doesn't sit well with me, I might just have to avoid them altogether.

Monster Quest - This one I straight up dropped. I couldn't believe how shoddy some of the art looked in this,  Alice being the main exception. I mean we're talking Newgrounds flash game art bad, and I'm not even referring to the vore scenes (I had them turned off). Not only that but the gameplay mechanics were rather pointless. It baffles me that a game like this could get as high of rating on VNDB as something like Kamidori Alchemist.  The comparison between these games is actually quite apt because they both have elements of "racial struggle" (in the fantasy sense of race) between nations, based on conflicting lifestyles and biology.  But Monster Quest just felt so cheap and shoddy in comparison, that I dropped it.

Kamidori Alchemist - Despite what I said above, I have stalled on this game. While much better than Monster Quest, the gameplay feels very easy to exploit, and the intrigue in the story seems weak.

Sengoku Rance - I haven't played enough to come up with any criticisms of this game, but the gameplay seemed very dull.  I guess I have played many non-VN games in my life, and it's hard for me to put up with mechanics that I have seen done better in other non-VN games.

Danganronpa - Stalled once I realized I would have to walk around in weird cheap-3D environments. However I may attempt it again soon because I hear so many good things about it.

  • 2 weeks later...

For me it was Air, which is odd because I saw the anime before I knew it was a VN.

I look back at it, like it was the shit. I managed to download the VN on my netbook, and it just sits there. MENACINGLY!

Will I ever read it?

Will I feel bad that pirated this game off of Fuwanovel back in the day?

Will It stop seeding on my torrent?

Will i ever go back to my netbook?

Who knows?

Stalled :

Stein Gate : Don't know why but I don't really like the graphic. I admire the story but the graphic ....... Have to force myself to play it.

Sound of Drop : Love the graphic but don't really like the synopsis. Still I already bought it at Humble Bundle Sekai. No way I won't play it. it just a matter of time.
