Who are your favorite Main Characters, and why?

Kenichi (Sharin) - Knows how to be silly but also a helpful psychologist (basically) when needed

Yamato (MajiKoi) - Smart dude and clearly has an internal source of viagra

Ema (Fashioning Lonesome/Bocchi Musume) - Because I relate to her extreme anti-social tendencies at times

I also think Kenichi was great, because he just knew what he was doing the whole time and also did well as a comediant.

Then there's Okabe Rintarou. Naturally, he makes for a good comedy, but more important is that he took care of his responsibilities, while going through a very hard time which is quite admirable for an ordinary person

The House In Fata Morgana's protagonist, and I ain't spoiling your ass so go play it already. Those who played it will understand.

Danganronpa V3's Kaede is my favorite character in the entire series

Spoiler

Full game spoilers, bich

Spoiler

shuichi can die in a ditch for all I care though, generic as fuck. still, kaede x shuichi is an A+ tier ship

Battler from Umineko too.

Not for his own virtues or strength, but for his place in the story, Keiichi in Higurashi.

Both of Remember11's protagonists are great characters and in good contrast with each other.

Kamio Ami- the main heroine of Semiramis no Tenbin.  She is hedonistic, brilliant, manipulative, and incapable of trusting others.  She is also a surprisingly good person when the situation allows for it, but since most of her life has not been one where the qualities of a 'good person' were beneficial, she rarely shows it.  The main reason I like her is because her personality is so out of sync with what we consider the norm... a typical state with me, since I tend to base my interest in a character on idiosyncratic personalities and behavior rather than on impressions.  However, even when it comes to impressions... Ami is deliciously scary (and erotic) on a purely human level.

Shigure Sora- Devils Devel Concept's protagonist.  99999 out of 100,000 people would run screaming if they met him... anywhere.  I've described him in detail elsewhere repeatedly, so I won't go into it, but his personality is a combination of high intelligence, feral desires, and obsession.  Driven by whim, instinct, and desire, he should be an easy character grasp, purely based on this... and probably the protagonist most misunderstood by his game's heroines in all of VNs.

Elceranto de Anoyance- A female main character from Draculius.  If there is a character who, to this day, is the definition of my ultimate immortal heroine, it is her.  'Belche' as she is called, is a five-hundred year old vampire born in Ireland who served as the head maid for the protagonist's father until his unfortunate demise.  She arrives at Jun's door shortly before he awakens as a vampire and becomes his mentor, maid, second mother, and overall the person closest to him throughout the VN.  Once known as the 'Witch of Kyoukan' (a word for the harshest level of the underworld in Japanese mythology, which has an equivalent in Dante's map of Hell, which is probably what it refers to), she is considered to be one of the most powerful/deadly vampires in existence by the Hunters, becoming more deadly the more enemies she has to face (She would make an excellent Servant, lol).  Her base vampiric ability is called 'Dead Copy', which allows her to imperfectly replicate any physical object whose structure she has entered into her memory (greatly expanded since becoming a vampire), up to and including body parts and machines.

Tokiwa Itsuka- The protagonist of Houkago no Futekikakusha.  I can't spoil this VN by giving a description of what is going on (not knowing what is going is key to a full appreciation of the prologue), but Itsuka isn't really striking in personality, looks, or ability.  No, what makes him stand out is his ability to endure.  I don't think I've ever seen a character endure as much crap as gets poured on him while remaining sane in a VN... or at least not in the detail in which the writer portrays his inner suffering.  For Tokiwa Itsuka, suicide is a betrayal of those who depend on him, and the path lying before him is a horrifically bleak tragedy that is already in its final stages when the story begins.

I don't really consider the average moege heroine to be a 'main character'.  And the protag-kuns in most moege lack any real personality.

Okabe Rintarou comes to mind.  He's got a very well defined personality, and it makes the game he's in shine.  I have to say the same for Kurou Daijuuji, the main character of Demonbane.  He has a very well defined personality, and it oozes through every aspect of the game that he's in to great effect.

Emiya Shirou. I know everyone hates him, and it's probably amazing that his name is coming up at all in a favorite main characters thread, but I really do think he stands out as an interesting protagonist with excellent character exploration. His code of ethics and perseverance makes him all the more respectable to me, and he's pretty frekin hype in UBW and HF.

Go easy on me. :pyaa:

I liked shirou, though I probably like him more as EMIYA.

Other MC's I liked were the MC in Deardrops, Dengeki stryker and Ayakashibito, because of *insert reasons*

Since a main character doesn't necessarily have to be the protagonist I will say Usami Haru. She is not just one of the romanceable heroines because we see a lot of the story from her perspective and she is essential to the story in ever way. She also outpaces the romantic competition by country mile. Usami is brilliant, beautiful, ruthless and potentially lethal.

Well, as far as I understand, Main Character is supposed to mean Protagonist here, so I'll stick to them.

I personally never keep lists of favorite protagonists or favorite heroines. I like some characters, dislike some other ones, and am mostly neutral to all the others. When it comes to protagonists, it's also really important for me that they have unique personalities and aren't meant to be generic self-inserts. Without any meaning to the order, here is a list of some protagonists I liked:

  • Yuuji, Grisaia. Well, I wouldn't call him a really well made character from a critical point of view, but he is one of the rare ones whose thoughts I really liked to follow. And he is pretty cool, I guess.
  • Takeru, Muv Luv series. I don't particularly like him as a person, but I believe that, as a character, he is actually really well made, with all of his motivations having a clear cause and meaning. Another important moment, it's actually scary how much his emotions during Alternative coincided with my own emotions while reading it.
  • Okabe, Steins;Gate. Well, this one is a bit of a fraud on my part, since I only watched the anime and read a few chapters of the VN. But if I actually finished the VN, I would probably put him at #1.
  • Battler, Umineko. I just like this guy.
  • Yuki, Subahibi. It would be pretty cool if she was a protagonist for a full VN, though it wouldn't work in that case.

Tendou Setsuna (Tokyo Babel) - Really like how he is calm and calculative through all the fights rather than the highly common emotional plot armors that most protags of this type of vns use (I'm looking at you FS/N). The scene that shows the most of his character is when he uses his raison d etre for the first time, he truly accepts his past and birth while still claiming himself independent and selfish. That was the best scene of the vn for me anyway.

Naoe Yamato (Majikoi) - Yamato is Yamato, we all love him.

Maou (G-senjou no Maou) - I loved how determined and thorough he was, the long planning he had done for years to accumulate into one hellish project was great. The scene that shows his character the best was when he met his father in the prison, how that one conversation shaped his whole life.

Takeda Akane (Hanachirasu) - His obsession and the lengths he goes to carry out his wish and utter disregard for everything else is simply wonderful. Especially the finale that he had orchestrated and the irony in it was beautiful.

Kazami Yuuji- when i first read the VN he was a type of MC that was very rare, he doesnt make stupid decisions, he is not like "FRIENDSHIP IS EVERYTHING!" etc etc, nowadays more common though. Oh and his quotes are the best :P The Amane song~!

Hinaori Kagome- I really liked her personality, downright arrogant but it was funny, her route was the best too

Keep in mind I've only read a handful on VN's so far. So my list of favourites might change over time....

Best Protag: Kazami Yuuji (Grisaia series). I just love his quotes and thought processes. Guy is a badass too.

Best Heroine: Habane Kotori (If my Heart Had Wings). I actually liked her bratty attitude. She also had quite a lot character development. Also, finale of her route was EPIC.

Best Waifu: Matsushima Michiru (Grisaia series). Otherwise known as ChiruChiru. She was the girl that caught my eye on looks alone, before I even played the game. Turns out she's LOL funny, is a loveable airhead, has the cutest voice ever (that is also funny when she flips out). And her backstory punched me right in the feels....
