Fall 2017 Anime discussion

I'm looking forward to more Shokugeki no Souma and Mahoutsukai no Yome. My wife and I will wait till Gintama this season is complete and binge watch that together. I'll watch UQ holder out of curiosity after being burnt by the original Negima series. And as per usual I'll watch at least the first episode of almost everything else and then trim my watch list as I go. Some of the new stuff looks vaguely interesting but one can never tell until the show really gets started how good it'll end up being. All rom+/-coms get a tick automatically and get more viewing time and as per usual there're a few. Some of the OVAs for shows I've already been watching look promising, and as a continuation, I'm looking forward to more ballroom; it's been a flawed show so far but still engaging.

I watched Dies Irae 00, and having never played the VN but heard lots about it, I had a vague idea about what it was going to be like. After one episode I'm not particularly impressed but since it's not really the start of the story, being 00, I'll keep watching. Who knows.

From what've heard from a friend, Black Clover sounds promising.

As for Dies Iraes, I'm still waiting for the +18 version of the VN, I have very high expectations of it.

In what regards the rest, I normally wait until they have a couple more episodes in order to look for a more detalied review.

Watching Dies Irae 0. This looks pretty bad.
The especially bad bits I don't remember being in the original, so hopefully they get better once they're on track.

I'll probably also watch Mahoutsukai no Yome, though I eventually got bored of the manga (I liked the author's previous work better).
Net-juu no Susume is anoter anime from manga I've read so I'll give that a try.

Not sure if I'll try UQHolder.
All Negima animes have been pretty awful save for the OVA?s that came with special edition manga (which most people say were pretty bad anyway).
I'm surprised they actually went with "Mahou Sensei Negima 2" as subtitle.
If they plan on showing the depicted scene they're really going to rush things through with this one......

Looking forward to bitch, (the actual anime name is waaaay too long) code realize, possibly itsudatte and maybe some others. Is there seriously no harem this season? :(

You're right, it's unbelievable. This may be the first season in a decade without a harem anime. Shokugeki is the closest to a harem and its harem qualities are very weak (with the obvious long long long term relationship between Erina and Souma being inevitable.)

Thank god that the harem animes are finally dying.

I currently have four anime lined up this season: Shokugeki S3, Kekkai Sensen S2, Inuyashiki and Ousama Game.

Inuyashiki is by the same author as Gantz, so I thought I'd check this one out since I enjoyed Gantz a lot.

My expectations aren't too high, but I hope Ousama Game delivers the thrills from death games I've come to love.

Not watching much this season due to time constraints; I really like what I'm watching though.

Was pleasantly surprised to see Gintama picking up the comedy arcs it skipped over, it's a nice break from all the high intensity stuff it's been sticking to for the last two seasons. Oh man, this episode seriously cracked me up!

Really hoping to see more arcs like these. ^_^

Watching the reboot of Kino no Tabi this season too. This'll be my first time experiencing the story at all, and I gotta say, I'm impressed so far. It would appear this series is going for an episodic format where each place visited has something peculiar, yet interesting about it. I'm liking how well the anime presents itself, too. If this turns out good enough, I may even consider watching the original series.

And finally there's Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou. Not much to comment on here, really, but it seems kinda nice. Idk, I was intrigued by the PVs and the fact that it was being produced by White Fox, but it's not quite what I was expecting it to be. It's a little slow and there's not much insight into the characters other than a loose explanation as to how they ended up where they were. I'll give it a couple more episodes before I decide whether or not to drop. On the plus side, the overall designs are really nice, and the anime does have a unique feel to it.

Actually, I'm pretty sure UQHolder falls under harem.

1st ep of UQHolder seems pretty ok. I somehow don't like the voice acting this time around, though.
Also, they try way too hard to limit depiction of blood, and I have a hard time seeing that work considering how profuse the bloodshed is in the series (comes with half the cast being immortal).
The battle scene was hard to watch due to how much of the screen was blacked out most of the time.

I don't know how I overlooked Mahoutsukai while browsing through the Fall lineup, but I'm so glad a friend brought this up to me. Just when I was starting to miss the 2 good fantasies I was watching last season, this anime thankfully manages to fill the void. Oh man, what a time to be a fantasy enthusiast. :kosame:

Seriously though, between the crisp animation, story, setting, world building, mischievous fairies, mysterious mage, interesting female protagonist, great direction, unpredictability, and the soundtrack all while setting itself up as a slice of life fantasy, there is so much I love about this anime already. I'm stoked that it's getting 24 episodes too, which is actually a first for me since every other seasonal favorite I've had since Spring 2014 has been 1 cour (except for Ore Monogatari, but it was a slow season and I wasn't that into it). Very strong contender for AoTS; hopefully it manages to maintain this kind of quality.

Uh yeah sure I should have figured it would be a harem with Akamatsu at the helm, but I went into this one knowing zero about this series after being burnt by the original Negima manga and anime (scanlated and fansubbed both and both failed hard at the end). It's interesting they not only called it negima 2 but even used the same theme song for the OP. I guess they figured the negima anime were successful enough to cash in on the franchise. Given the way every anime iteration of negima came up with fake endings that failed hard for the manga that clearly had a long way to go, I don't have much faith that this series will be much better in trying to fake an ending or not. Nonetheless my Stockholm syndrome will have me watching it /o\ I watched the second episode and dammit I enjoyed it. For shame.

The outlook so far after just over one week (since I start out watching almost everything.)

Animegataris looks kind of interesting.

I don't know how black clover managed to have 2 episodes with about 15 seconds of plot stretched out by nothing but shouting shouting shouting over and over again. Dropped that shit.

Blend S looks cute enough and harmless.

Dies Irae already mentioned looks pretty bad.

Evil or Live was pretty bad. Dropped.

Houseki no kuni was really interesting.

Imouto sae ireba is disconcerting with its perversion rather than amusing but I'll keep watching.

Just because seems interesting.

Juuni taisen I couldn't even remember what happened which is a bad sign but I'll check out ep2 shortly. Death match? 12 signs of the zodiac again?

Kino no tabi was engaging.

Konohana Kitan was cute and harmless.

Kujira is mildly interesting.

Mahoutsukai no yome was very interesting as expected.

Netjuu no susume is pretty straight forward predictable romcom so easy to continue.

Ousama game there's something about it that pisses me off but Hocchan as heroine ffs, I find it hard to drop any series with her as VA.

Sengoku Night Blood. Bishounen stuff, not interested in pretty boys. Dropped.

Shokugeki more of the same which I don't mind but it is in danger of feeling too repetitive now.

Shoujo shuumatsu was most unusual but intriguing enough to keep watching.

Two car looks like an easy to watch sport anime. Hopefully it has some depth to it.

UQ holder as discussed above. I'll keep watching.

Urahara was absolutely not my cup of tea. Magic girls and dress ups only as the story? I think not.

Ballroom e youkoso still enjoying this quite a bit.

Omiai aite - lol more porn which should excite me but I'm sick of watching guys force girls to like them through foreplay. That's so wrong on so many levels I can't find this titillating. Might be others' cup of tea though.

Osake wa fufu - very cute with mature characters for a change.

Gintama - being stored up for binge watching.

That's it so far. Quite a few I didn't bother with even the first episode and there are still a few others to try. Looking forward to more 2022 Yamato.

Overall nothing really looking awesome one week in, but sometimes it's a few weeks before the real gems stand out.

I tried to watch more Ousama game. I can't stand shit like this. Die.

Saw first episode of Inuyashiki. Looks pretty lame and predictable but I won't drop it just yet.

Shobitch was reasonably entertaining as the ecchi romcom for the season. I'll keep watching.

Incredibly I also read that Black Clover will be 51 episodes. 51 episodes of shouting does not a good plot make. God so many good shows that could do with sequels or longer runs and this shit gets 51. I'm guessing it's based on the success of the manga but the first 2 episodes the anime were woeful.

When I first watched the trailer for Black Clover, I wasn't sure if it was gonna be a parody or a tryhard imitation of Naruto. Either way, I'm glad I didn't pick it up, lol.

Netjuu no Susume was a big surprise, so bad for all the low score, it's a little generic but who cares ?

Just Because picked my interest.

And Black Cover doesn't sound promosing... or maybe it's 'cause a don't really like generic shounen.

Also I'll try some other anime of this season, I hope it'll have some gem like the last season with Made in Abyss or sweetheart one like Isekai Shokudou.

I won't say thank god 'cause they are still people who like harem (RIP harem lovers), and ecchi animes are also dying.

I'll comment again after I've seen at least 2 episodes of everything. The most "interesting" different shows are houseki, shoujo shuumatsu and kujira though I'm enjoying the first more and the second is an interesting way to have cute girls just getting by in a post apocalyptic world without really discussing it while the last doesn't feel that original any more. However none are of the standard of Made in Abyss IMO. I can't see any new shows being stand out this season unfortunately.

If you want my thoughts on this season, here they are.

Washio Sumi / Yuuki Yuuna S2 - I've already watched the movies, and they're incredible. The last half is really good, but I'm feeling really sorry for the people watching the series. The first two episodes worked well enough, but the next 4 episodes really work a hell of a lot better in pairs of two like the movies did. I especially think that the magic of Movie 2 will be lost in the TV version. The subs that Amazon has for the TV version are also shit compared to the fansubs of the movies. The movies are the best way to experience this story, and I encourage anybody who is watching the series to just watch the movies instead.

Blend S - This is a pretty charming show. I mainly like it for Maika's sadist faces which are hilarious, but the series overall is really solid with good characters, good humor, and cute girls. Not much else you can ask for here.

Girl's Last Tour - I've already read the manga, and I think the anime is doing a really good job adapting it. I personally find the manga better since the art is a lot more distinctive in how it presents the world, but the anime does as good of a job as it could adapting the world as they could. I think the manga mostly gets better as it goes on, so I'm looking forward to seeing further chapters animated.

Animegataris - Animegataris has the worst first episode of the season, but it's second episode was actually really entertaining. A lot of the charm comes from the ways they twist existing anime names, but moving forward I say I'm excited to see the group dynamic as each of these characters represent a different kind of otaku, but none of them are grating exaggerations. This makes the interactions feel rather natural and as if they're actually a group that likes discussing anime with one another. Also, this show has the best OP of the season at least as far as the song is concerned.

Inuyashiki - The first half of the first episode was incredible, but the rest while not bad kind of falls flat. It's really easy to feel for our protagonist and the first half does a great job introducing him and his struggles, but the superhero angle that the second half takes kind of puts me off from the show. I hope it can handle it better than it did in the first episode, but I'm at a loss as to whether I trust it to.

Just Because! - It's mostly like Animegataris where it had a lackluster first episode and a much improved second. The first episode was a visual bore and it failed to ever click with me. The second episode though did click with me and it uses the relationships established in the first episode incredibly well. I hope this ends up being one of those unpredictable love polygon shows. There's no source material so anything can happen really.

Mahoutsukai no Yome - There's mostly been a lot of explanations so far with some decent enough characters. It doesn't really do anything bad (besides that OP), but it has failed to captivate me yet. It's source material is pretty well regarded, so I'm hoping that this is building to something really good, so I'll just have to wait and see.

Konohana Kitan - Kawaii fox girls. Enough said.

Children of The Whales - It has amazing art, but other than that, there's little it has going for it. Children of The Whales is giving us a lot of information about it's world, but I don't feel it's doing it at the right pace. It's going incredibly fast, and I don't believe it's done a good job at establishing it's characters so far.

Love Live! Sunshine!! S2 - I was never a fan of Aquors, but considering how great S2 of the original was, I had high expectations for this one, and as of now, it's failing to meet those expectations. This season is using the save the school plotline again and it's constantly reminding me about how not good most of the characters are. Aquors really don't have the same chemistry that u's had, and this season isn't offering anything new to change that opinion.

Shobitch - This show has bad anime sex comedy as expected, but the main couple is actually pretty sweet when sex jokes aren't being made.

Imouto Sae Ireba Ii - It's first episode was kind of uninteresting, but as of the second episode, I like the directions they're taking the characters and I'm really eager to see where they all end up.

Kino's Journey S2 - It's more Kino's Journey, so it's great. The second episode was kind of meh and felt rushed, but I'm certain the future episodes will all be high quality.

Kekkai Sensen & Beyond - It's more Kekkai Sensen, so it's a really fun action series. It's about on par with the original series and I really like it right now.

I am currently watching the following shows this season...anime-gataris, gintama, Kino's Journey, Juni Taisen (the ending I'm pretty sure is a spoiler for the order in which the cast dies), recovery of an MMO junkie, magus bride, blood blockade, food wars, and shobitch (hate this name).

I have not yet watched the whale show or just because and anything not mentioned I either didn't watch or dropped after an episode.

I may elaborate once I watch a few more episodes. I usually end up dropping about half of what I start though...
