  I know what a culturist is mate, but there's also such a thing as cultural racism. I was asking him since I don't know him at all since I wouldn't know his actually view on the matter unless he mentions it himself. There isn't enough information provided to form a clear picture on where he actually stands.

He says he despises Asia, he feels contempt and repugnance for Asia by definition. There are 48 countries in Asia, each with each own sets of culture and beliefs among many other things.

I was talking about eastern asia (far east), so China nk sk Jpan and Taiwan. I cannot say that I feel repugnance by Asia, anyway, except maybe on particular occasions, like when someone try to shill their ridiculous tradtional medicine.

So my "rant" was nothing more a simplified exaggeration, I dislike their school system, government, how most of their company are managed, thier sexism and social backwardness etc. On the other hand, the otaku subculture, which is a byproduct of all of that shit, is extremely interesting to follow.

When you initial said that you despised [its a strong word] Asia, I was curious as to why.

Thanks for clarifying. I think a lot of people would agree with you about some, if not all of those points. Cheers man.:sachi:

To add an on-topic post again for a change, I seek mostly good art and romance with charming female characters from a VN, ideally with some nice ero to spice it up. That's IMHO the biggest strength of visual novels - or eroges - in general. The main job of the story is then to make the characters shine.

I do appreciate a good story VN, but as long as they are just the exception than the rule I do prefer western movies and TV shows for a good story.

For me, I play VNs for strong mysteries. I think the medium's two biggest strengths are mystery/suspense games and romance/dating/ero, but since I'm not super interested in the romance side of things I tend to stick to whodunits and speculative fiction. I also personally like games with some light Gameplay or puzzle-solving to help break things up.

Porn obviously.

Dis thread is full of hypocrites, lmao.

Let's be honest. When I read my first VNs (old JAST games, True Love, May Club), It was for the porn element ( At the time, I didn't know what a VN was :ph34r: ).  Two or three years ago (officially, I entered the world of Visual Novel in april/may 2014), I tried some nukiges (from Mangagamer) like Eroge! or Imouto Paradise : I didn't like it that much; from now on, just like Jartse, I see porn as a bonus (sometimes it's a real plus. Yume Miru Kusuri, for example).

So, back to the question : What do I seek from VNs? Globally, I want an addictive story (rom-com, pure comedy, drama, charage...Whatever ! My tastes are rather varied). However, I must confess a weakness : corrupted by years and years of mangas and Jrpgs, I 'm too attracted to classic cute/kawai/moe character designs. Too often, my choices of VN were influenced by this flaw (ex : I'm reading Dal Segno)...Believe me : this fatal inconsistency was responsible for many disappointements :vinty:

Since I was a child I always liked reading books (Robin Hood, king arthur, and stuff). Then as a grown up I moved my interests to Policial/mistery (Da vinci code, Sherlock Holmes books, etc) and adventure novels (my favourite writer is Wilbur Smith). And of course I always loved anime series and manga. So when I found out about the VN world I saw a new reading experience mixing both novels and anime/manga.

I mostly seek mistery stories (G-Senjou and Kara no Shoujo series my favourites) but I have been thrilled by romance/school novels such as Hoshimemo, Da Capo or Chrono Clock. And I also seek VNs with a true route/ending which you have to unlock by reading every other route.

Like many have said, stories and characters. While this will sound like an Internet generation cliché, if I pick up a book and start reading, around 10 to 15 pages in I'll lose interest and never pick it up again. With VNs it's a whole other story. If I'm even mildly engaged with a VN, I'll devote all my free time to reading it until I'm done and have a blast doing it. The voices, sprites, music and CGs mix into something that grabs me by the nuts and doesn't let me go. So really it's a bit of a replacement for literature as well.

And a part of it is also due to the many "diverse" fantasies enacted by the characters in order to stimulate certain "cravings", won't deny that.

Heriones, atmosphere, escapism/being able to feel a different mood, being able to see or discover ideals/values within the story, emotional engagement, cartharsis, things to wonder about, characters to watch. Oh, and don't forget Ero, of course.

Totallly agree with @InvictusCobra, the combination of music+text+graphics+voice is amazing and almost is what I live for.

1$ for everyone who was honest and said p0rn.

To those who said Story & Characters: Start reading books, hipsters! Or do you really wanna argue that waifus&husbandos are more than cheap instant noo.. faps and P.L.O.T. something likable ;)

The combination of text, sound and pictures (or lack of pictures in the good old ones) is working pretty well, and the still produce hybrids with gameplay that is actually gameplay.

I like porn with a story. And visual novels have the best ones in all adult entertainment's industry. I don't ashamed to admit why sometimes I choose them over mainstream games, books or movies. They give me an ideal sexual content without typical society restrictions. And they handle romance, action and drama stuff pretty well and exciting for me to go back to reading, even if I'm getting older. I have never received such complex combined feelings of intellectual, emotional and physical enjoyment from any other media. Movies are good but they can't provide such level of intimacy. And when my real waifu is not around, visual novels save me from loneliness.

The obvious answer for most mediums is the story.

But what do I seek in visual novels? An experience.

An incredible experience with a great story, memorable music, high level of immersion, great characters, story that reaches out to you and your emotions. I want to feel like I am in the story.

I did not read many visual novels so I can't say I can judge their quality well. But I did get such experiences in G - Senjou no Maou, Ever17 and in some other visual novels.

But that is not a full answer. What I "seek" is not the only thing I find but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate it. There are many things we don't know that maybe we would have liked and want to seek.

Learning things, experiencing new things, in different ways, different perspectives, different stories and emotions, things that are hard to describe but that weren't part of you,... There are many things one can find in visual novels.

So,  I know some of the things I seek. But there are probably many things I don't know I want. That is also something that I probably seek.

I look for a story I can attach to. With characters I care about. I dont care about length, as long as the writing is great, and I feel like the characters and world are good. Sometimes the story isnt all that matters.Your average slice of life VN which has less of a story than many of the great fantasy stories out there can be much more compelling, interesting and emotional than any of those novels. For example, clannad and imhhw are both 2 of my favourite stories of all time. Heck, clannad IS my favourite story of all time. Yet it tells its story in a small world. But the characters and writing make you feel apart of that world. So what do I look for in a VN? Or any type of book or movie? an attachment.

* Heartwarming story (apparently I'm addicted to the feels)

* Themes which can be dark (tends to get me on edge, especially if it's happening to a character I've emotionally invested in). (Yep, I'm addicted to the feels).

* Nice music (generally I'm a fan of video game music in general).

* Moments of badass.

* Romance ........

* .... and the odd h scene (don't judge) <_<

I read/play a particular visual novel whenever I get bored from playing too much complicated RTS and RPG games. It's a way to relax my senses and kinda put things on perspective. Of course its also because for the cute characters and amazing art style that begs me to try digital painting out someday ( Preferably using Clip Studio Paint or Affinity Designer )

Well I got to admit, aside from the story and soundtrack, I read VNs for the Hentai scenes as well whenever I feel lonely, devastated or when reality slap me in the face.

At the very least it gives me the option to comfort myself from the toils of human existence hahahaha :wahaha:

Mainly for the stories and the art. I like the feeling of being drawn into another world, but not in the way that anime does it. VNs are more in-depth and personal.

Also for the H-scenes, depending on how it's depicted. That being said, I prefer an eroge with some story and depth to it. Also lolis.

Too bad there aren't many lolige that are translated to English. I'm still waiting for Monobeno.

The porn, bluntly put.

Honestly, I vastly prefer the video format for porn but sadly, very little of it takes place in the settings that I want (mostly sword & magic fantasy) or have the types of characters I want to see (demons/mostergirls for instance). If hentai could have the quality of art/animation and length of a traditional anime (Think X-rated High School DxD), I probably wouldn't be playing VNs. But that isn't gonna happen so here I am.

Unfortunately for me, most of the VNs that tend to get official translations are more on the romantic side of things, which I simply find boring. Nothing against those types of stories, I've just never been one for romance. So nukige are definitely more my thing. Stuff like the Monster Girl Quest and Rance series have been the types of games I've enjoyed the most (having actual gameplay is a plus for me). I would really love to see Eushully games and other VNs like them get officially supported and hopefully with the success of the Alicesoft games, that will eventually happen.
