What do you seek from VNs?

I love VNs as a medium.  This is a very simple statement, but the reasons why are a bit more complex... so I ask you, what, precisely do you want from VNs?

To me, the answer is obvious... 'Tell me a story Papa!'  However, I realize my opinions aren't necessarily the dominant ones in this community *pauses for cries of shock and screams about how the Apocalypse must be coming*

So, I can't help but ask again... what is it you seek from VNs as a medium?

My entry into the VN scene was with the Da Capo series, I hated the anime ending and i wanted to get that sour taste off my mouth. Little did i know i'd get addicted to this form of storytelling where I have some control over where i take the story.:Chocola:

Games like Ever17 Never7 G-Senjou Comyu etc etc they really take advantage that its a VN to tell a story that wouldnt be possible or have the same impact in other forms

So what basically what i seek are waifus and stories :wahaha:

I've always been a seeker of stories since I was a kid, my discovery of Vns as a medium just gave me another road to take my strolls on. I realize that some Vns may be cliched or similar to each other with slight alterations, but that doesn't really matter.

As long as there's some heart and knowledge in it, some value to me, I'll thoroughly enjoy the journey. For example, I loved the Da Capo series, Majikoi and Koichoco as much as Tokyo Babel, Steins Gate or Dies Irae. I loved them in different ways, and learnt and felt different things from those stories.

Honestly as long as you have a fervent desire for stories, it doesn't really matter what genre you're reading or how similar some stories are, you just want those words and details flowing into your mind :sachi: and giving you something of value.

Vns are beautiful, they tell their stories with music, art and voice acting. You don't have to build the worlds yourself, its given to you. All you have to do is sit back, get comfy and enjoy yourself. I still love reading books though, they offer different pleasures that are equally satisfying to me. Vns are just a different kind of fun :Chocola:.

Quote

“There are books full of great writing that don't have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story... don't be like the book-snobs who won't do that.

Read sometimes for the words--the language. Don't be like the play-it-safers who won't do that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book.”

I think that  the first thing that i seek in vns are the possibilities that they bring due to the format. Before i enter in the medium i was always thinking when reading or watching something "what if x or y thing happened instead of z?" and eroges bring me to some extent that. Obvious that i was looking for good stories too.

Choices are very high on the list of reasons why I read VNs. I've found that just about any 'game' that involves some sort of decision making, playing out various scenarios, has my attention. However, this is also closely related to my desire for stories. I've come to find that I can enjoy all sorts of stories. I'm still not certain on what exactly makes me like something, but small, self-contained stories can be very enjoyable indeed.

The other two main reasons are character interactions and romance. VNs almost always take their romance a bit further than other media I consume... or at least develop it a little more. Other than that I like character interactions of all sorts, including, to a certain extent, many of the stock character archetypes so I can see how they lightly differ from one another.

The VNs I've enjoyed the most have a good story, or at least one that appeals to me. Also the tempo and setup are important; I loved VLR and was hooked to it until I finished it.

That doesn't preclude romance or even porn; I found Hoshimemo very decent both in terms of porn and love story.

However, I've not tried nukiges yet (the most close would be Wanko to Kurasou and I cringed); let's see when I read Nekopara.

For me, sadly good porn can't replace a good story. But if the story is decent and the porn is too, then it's neat.

Mostly involving and entertaining stories set in distinct settings of their own. I prefer the highly atmospheric ones, with good art and equally great soundtracks if possible.

I'm still hoping to see more games that feature anthropomorfic beings or entire races, those that typically dwelve into the sociopsychological side of things, issues and benefits regarding coexistence. Stories that explore unusual grounds are good, too and there's nothing better than tales of marvelous adventures.

Mostly the stories. I really love stories in general. So as long as the story is good, whether it's manga, anime, novels, music, vns... anything goes, but I think vn is the best way to tell a story. I mean it's the combination of pretty much every way to tell a story. My first vn was Narcissu and it was such a great experience that I still trying to find a way to experience it again.

Whether it be porn, plot, or porn with a plot I simply ask that visual novels distract me from annoying real life. Whether that takes the form of the fnck up love geometry of Overflow games, the comedy of Majikoi, or the social political commentary of Muv Luv is inconsequential.

I despise asia but I love asian entertainment.

Do you despise the people or the continent?

PS: Basically I'm asking you if you are racist against Asian people or you dislike the weather in Asian countries or something.

Some years back, I thought that VNs were boring games since there's nothing for you to "play". I'm glad I realized how wrong I was.

I decide to give it a try after reading the mess that was the Fate/Stay Night manga. Even without reading the original, I could see they didn't do a very good job telling that story. And I never stopped ever since! And now I'm always seeking something new to read, no genre prejudice.

Soooo, I guess what I seek is enjoyment. Some VNs have better stories, others have better characters, others have nothing really good but it's good for some laughs. All is fair, as long I enjoyed it!

I want to be temporarily (or, perhaps, permanently) transported to another world. That's essentially one of the main reasons stories exist, I suppose, but VNs do this particularly well for me due to the increased immersion as a result of having music and art, and the generally closer relationship you have with the protagonist. I especially enjoy VNs that are able to set and maintain a distinct atmosphere throughout, and ones that can make you invested enough in their universe that you feel emotions with an intensity similar to the characters themselves.

Immersion

VNs have a nice way of keeping the atmosphere and the length of VNs makes the stories flesh out more and feel more relaxed. I actually moved to VNs because I found anime too rushed and fast.

VNs on the other hand can talk about things as long as they want and makes me feel immersed and feel as though you're talking with random friends rather than reading a story.

Hmm I think nowadays I simply read them because it became a part of my daily routine, which is not something bad. I have always enjoyed reading books and watching cartoons/animes (Cartoon Network mostly), and I've became a fan of animes very soon in my life. All my otaku friends, though, are what we call weeabos or something like that, so I never really connected to people in this area.

But it was because of a group of fans that I got in touch with Higurashi (anime), and loved it from the start. Then Umineko, then the worst ending of the worst adaptation; I wanted to know what would happen in Umineko, and I found out that there was a "reading game" with the full story. The first time I tried playing it, I could not install it, since I did not know about Japanese locale and stuff, so I entirely gave up.

Months later, I ended up finding the download link for it again (good old days of pirating) and tried it one more time. I think I took five to seven months to finish it, no joking. I remember starting it on April and finishing it near ENEM (similar to SAT) on october. I was amazed, and decided to play something else. Why not Rewrite?

Thinking back, I may be a true warrior for starting this hobby with two of the longest VNs available at the time (and probably until now). I even gave up on Rewrite during its common route, and only months later I decided to go back to it, and read Lucia's route in two or three days. Starting here, I've read almost all of the classics of translated VNs we had before the localization boom.

I think I did not quite answer your question, but I think it is nice sometimes to remember how everything started for me. I almost never watch new animes, and the few that I have are stalled for weeks, but I can't sleep if I spend a day without reading a VN.
